The kind of film I usually avoid, where a story based on an innocent lie thrives upon its characters' stupidity and makes me want to shake my fist furiously at the screen. This is more about the agonizing journey that Vinterberg takes Lucas on in clearing his name, a discouraging ordeal yet practical scaffolding for Mikkelsen's powerhouse performance.

As a generally Pretty Chill Dude Who Wants To Just Get Along With, Like, Everybody, I tend to get really uncomfortable when watching stories where innocents are going through hell because of actions out of their control. So yeah, this movie made me pretty damn uncomfortable. Events unfold in a pretty believable way, with shortsightedness and assumptions overwriting people's common sense, making this all the more frustrating. A very solid but not mindblowing drama.

What's scary about The Hunt is how depressingly plausible it all is. Nobody's really at fault for the inciting incident, but a few unfortunate coincidences snowball into an utter nightmare. It's a Hitchcock-ian wrong man scenario treated with psychological realism and clinical restraint, and it packs that much more of a punch for it.

Violated children seems to be the go-to setup in Danish kammerspiels, because incest and pedophilia are the worst crimes you can imagine in a country without gun violence and real social injustice. This is why Vinterberg can be a frustratingly film schooled director, always utilizing very dramatic plot points. That does not make this a bad movie per se. The premise is interesting, and the actors sell their parts. I just can't help but wish that this project had befallen a greater storyteller.

Excellent acting and directing aside, I think The Hunt is a courageous film. The idea that false accusations even exist has become almost taboo in the west, and some in the audience will therefore find the script unbelievable. I believed it, and I appreciated its restraint and sense of proportion actually. And to anyone admitting to themselves that this scenario is realistic in contemporary culture, it's a disturbing, harrowing, upsetting film.

I have a hard time imagining such an un-professional kindergarten teacher or staff in real life, and I would've preferred more alone time with Lucas and his inner fight to keep cool instead of the son/girlfriend-focus, but nevertheless a tense and well-acted drama that raise a relevant discussion of modern society.

I thought it was very good. The film felt very realistic. The lead actor was brilliant, as was the rest of the cast, who all felt like real people. It was a pretty frustrating emotional experience, and I applaud the film for that. It's a tough subject and I thought it was handled well. Recommended.

A sober and extremely well-played drama, that perhaps is as close to a real life horror movie, as you can get in safe little Denmark. I have some issues with both Susse Wold's for-the-plot-convenient inept handling of the accusations and especially the weak third act that needed more Fritz Lang's Fury, less paralyzed moping, but that shouldn't take too much away from this otherwise great movie.

The reason I argue that this might be an even finer movie than Festen is that Vinterberg manages to make the constructed community of the welfare state show it's seedy underbelly. And I award him extra points for doing it in a way that differs from the oh-so-praised "Nordic Noir" where the villain is inevitably some cartoonish conservative rich guy. No, the monsters are among us, and they live in our mirrors, and Vinterberg drags them out through the glass.

Very well executed drama with natural performances and a good script. Successfully made me feel very uncomfortable although I can't help but feel that it's slightly turning away from some of the most problematic issues in the story by focussing very heavily on the victim's suffering. It has some interesting and well observed ideas about our perceptions of gender and mannerisms but doesn't quite feel unmanipulative all the way.

Oh Gob, when I realized what it would be all about, I wanted to scream NOOOOO! I'm fascinated by this subject, and I hate it, cause it almost makes me want to go to Law School. Anyway, I wish people would see it and pay close attention to how easily a child's comment can devolve into an avalanche of misconstructions and result in tragic injustice. It's nightmarish.

An intense depiction of social exile that draws empathy from either side of the story. The ending is ambiguous as we get this feeling Lucas will never fully be redeemed among the people. The film covers a heavy subject that projects how fast one's life can be ruined by misinterpretation and broken trust within a community. Mikkelsen is brilliant and gives quite a performance.

THIS is what you get for smacking James Bond in the nuts! In all seriousness, this is some very powerful film-making. A kindergarten teacher who has to suddenly deal with a lie that's blown completely out of proportion. It is a realistic portrayal that never once took me out of the moment. Mads Mikkelsen is incredible here as is his longtime friend Theo played by Thomas Bo Larsen. The ending may have been a tad dragged out, but it is without question worth a watch - as unsettling as it may be.

After all those years, dogma '95 is still dead, but the spirit remains. Jagten's characters don't feel like actors. They feel so natural and recognizable that they're like people we know for years. The direction just gives them so much room to breathe. Storywise, it's frustrating that characters can't seem to resolve even the tiniest problematic situation. But it's still a worthy contender for the best foreign film-oscar.

It has to be most overrated film of the last year. Vinterberg, the well-known director of broken, both tragic and funny homes, zooms in -- just like in the times of Dogma -- everytime he wants you to feel sorry for this poor, wrongly accused teacher, but the thing is: The Hunt is a rather manipulative drama -- intended to make you hate all those people, and actually ended with the suggestion that he will always be under menace -- than a humanist tale.

Mikkelsen gives a great performance, but the rest of the film was just frustrating. CHILDREN DON'T LIE?! Growns up are idiots. I understand them wanting to protect their children, and I wasn't asking for them to take Mads side, but, jesus christ, don't take what a 4 year old girl says as gospel.

A propaganda flick, not to support any agenda, but just to erect it's unbelievably wonky narrative. All the major plot points are so incredibly senseless and unrealistic you can feel the mechanics of this film working as you're watching it. It's a shame, since the movie does bring up an interesting case of lies and truth intertwined with each other, but this is such a lazy rendition of this theme that negates its mysteries.

Searing, provocative consideration of the stigma of false accusations may have played as melodrama in a pre-#MeToo world, but feels all too real when contemplated in the context of the movement's more reactionary quarters. Superbly performed all round, anchored by Mikkelsen's haunting and sympathetic performance. Dogme sensibilities are well utilized here, providing an appropriately grim and oppressive atmosphere as things turn ugly.

Although this movie was really great, it was also probably the most frustrating thing I have ever watched. They really make you haaate almost everyone but the main character, and he just gets bombarded with problem after problem, so any scene with even the slightest happiness in it is the world's biggest relief. A lie is a motherfucker. Once it's settled in, it may never truly leave. This movie excels at showing how the snowball-principle in a society, where the media induces fear of child abuse, terrorist attacks and global crisis, can turn the innocent into victims. It's so frustrating to see, how everyone involved chooses their own truth, and just bends what they hear so it applies to their version. On the other hand, you get to think what you would do, and the answer isn't exactly simple.

where a lars von trier film is transparently manipulative, thomas vinterberg tries to hide his manipulations behind formal conformity. make no mistake: every scene is carefully constructed to provoke specific reactions and support a particular ideology. with this in mind, i believe that jagten is one of the most rigorously misogynistic films ever made. there was a great analysis by jonathan mccalmont but unfortunately he has deleted his blog.

A powerful, compelling and heartbreaking portrait of things going wrong in the lives of one small community, and in particular, one man: 40-year-old teacher Lucas. A student claims that Lucas has sexually abused her. It's just a random lie that a set of unfortunate contrivances conspired to create. There's no-one really to blame in this situation, every character behaves exactly as you'd think they might - which is exactly what makes the movie so difficult, and stunning, a watch. Outstanding.

If anyone thinks the events of this movie are exaggerated, search for the Outreau trial. The escalation of the drama was well done, and I appreciated that the characters remained " human throughout all of it. My main complaints are that the resolution of the drama feels like an afterthought, and that a lot of the drama could have been avoided if the main character could have been less stupid in the way he interacts with others after being accused.

Has a nice even rhythm that helped glue me in and keep me invested. It's well shot and the acting is superb all around. I also like how it avoids Hollywood twists and melodrama, instead choosing to paint the events and characters rather naturalistically (as frustratingly dumb as some of the characters may be). However, in doing so it does lack a certain "bite" and in retrospect seems a little unsubstantial, but I can't deny that the experience was worth having.

Visually anoyingly inconsistent. The first hour or so is involuntarily funny to a degree where it's not befitting for a film with this kind of theme. I failed to engage with the motivation behind the actions that unfold in the film. I think it's down to a poor description of the society where the film takes place. An intense nightmarish drama. Some people have said the plot has holes, is stupid or unrealistic. Personally i thought it all seemed plausible from start to finish. There's been increasing discussion about sexual abuse in society and the importance of believing victims since proof of such abuse is exceedingly rare. This film paints a scenario of what could happen if we do drop due process. Many men do shy away from working with children for fear of something like this happening.

Vinterberg returns to his brave toe-stepping roots with The Hunt, deftly exploring a taboo social issue that most film makers wouldn't dare to address. Comparisons have been made with The White Ribbon in some quarters, but unlike The White Ribbon this film is not an exercise in outdated bourgeois browbeating: it's addressing a relevant problem in the here and now. The Hunt reminds us of the dangers of collective hysteria, and Mikkelsen is powerful and moving as the accused man.

Probably the most interesting thing is the way it casually lobs the important question, "What kind of justice system can we create to deal with this kind of thing?" Spearheaded by the great performances of Mads Mikkelsen and Thomas Bo Larsen you get thouroughly involved in this deep psychologal drama and I was on the edge of my seat for most the movie. Hell hath no fury like a 5 year old scorned. Karla, btw operates on a sociopathic level maybe 2 rungs down from the heights at which 'Kevin' is found. The dialogue lacked rational thought in almost all confrontational scenes, every character is driven by a dim emotional urge to ensure their lifelong friend is castigated thoroughly. Though the path the script took wasn't believable, the notion of the alienation suffered by Lucas came through strongly. Totally was Agnes or her son at the end.

Mikkelsen's performance is so great, as well as the kid, the teacher, the other adults. I don't know why I am surprised - this is Danish cinema.
