Dafoe's simmering performance carries uneven drama, which works best when it shows Dafoe's struggles against the elements (set against breathtaking picturesque Tasmanian backdrop). Less successful are the simplistic portrayals of other locals (including a surprisingly dull Neill), though O'Connor is typically lovely; and an awkward attempt to shoehorn in material about the Tassie environmental movement (likely to leave non-locals scratching their heads).

Dafoe is characteristically wonderful, the scenery is haunting...and that's about it. The entire film is devoid of direction and a consistent tone and the ending didn't do anything for me. I honestly think I would have preferred it if the entire film was Dafoe wandering around Australia killing animals and discovering various things attached to rope.

Dafoe: solid. The scenery: breathtaking. The last half hour: intense and effective. The rest of it: kind of unmemorable.

A beautifully shot man vs. wild drama, with a little bit of 'man vs himself' put in for good measure. Hadn't really heard of this until recently, and it was a pleasant surprise, a lot more serene than most of the other films I've been watching recently. Dafoe is obviously the stand out

Willem Dafoe is good as always, one of the greatest faces in film. Some nice scenery too, and a decent if pretty unspectacular film overall.

A little too man-vs-nature, man-vs-self, self=tiger at points, but Dafoe proves to be a great actor. Also, extremely well shot - beautiful scenery.

Very patient and very beautiful scenery. It's best when no one is talking, which is fortunately quite often. The kids are very good, and so is Dafoe. There are a few plot-devicey scenes that take away from the overall atmosphere and flow of story and the climax is a well-trodden path. But, there's enough to like to make it worth a look.

I liked this a lot. It takes a risk combining a thriller with a strong drama, but it pays off. Nice pace, and a really stunning setting.

Tasmania. Come for the breathtaking scenery. Stay for the tasty wildlife. Mmm... Tastes like extinct tiger-dog.

Contemplative, travelogue-ish thriller. Great scenery. Jurassic Park joke.

I developed a serious emotional bond with the characters of this movie, for reasons I still don't fully know. There were times when I thought, "In other movies this would be really boring, but here it's not." There were a few moments that didn't really click, but The Hunter is definitely worth your time. Dafoe delivers one of his best performances. I actually cried at three separate points. Touching, compelling, great movie.

Nettheim just doesn't have the balls to allow Dafoe to stay in the wilderness for more than a few minutes at a time. I liked it at the start but after the 20th trip back & forth between town & forest to check in on the progressively less interesting human drama I was pretty checked out. And then the plot gets almost comically grim-dark depressing out of nowhere at the end. A more assured director willing to let the hunter actually stay out there for twelve days could have made something great.

Altogether pointless, before becoming stupid. I don't know what Empire Magazine were smoking when they put in their "50 must see movies of 2011" list.

A solid film, but also one that won't blow you away. Dafoe is good. The premise is interesting, but the story doesn't quite live up to the standard I felt that premise set. The Tasmanian backdrop is a nice addition, although I thought the actual Tasmanian Tiger looked pretty bad.

Had a lot of potential, but loses its way after the first half. I loved some things intensely, such as the cinematography, beautiful scenery and strong acting, overall. However, the script, story and direction are not always up to par. This film could have been great.

The entire movie feels like an excuse to present a scene where a person kills the last member of a species. While certainly a dramatic notion, I wasn't satisfied with the circumstances that purported to force this climax. Scenery, acting, and tone were top notch.

Simmeringly atmospheric; it's light on dialogue, but high on tension. (A wonderfully appropriate use of Springsteen's "I'm on Fire", too)

Part character piece, part family drama and part political thriller, this bitter tale is most effective when unmistakable veteran Willem Dafoe is quietly tracking through the Tasmanian wilderness, as his rugged presence and the atmospheric cinematography are enough to hold our interest.

While the politics and environmental movement of Tasmania were oddly placed, the rest of the film is quite a unique journey. Dafoe, as per usual, delivers a fantastic and interesting performance against a gorgeous backdrop. Wonderful cinematography.
