It requires a LOT of suspension of disbelief, and the character motivations are usually pretty stupid. But the prequel-sequel set up is decent, Kristen Stewart is noticeably but not regrettably absent, the end sequence is fun, the production design is impressive, and overall it's a marked improvement over the original. I expect by the time we get Huntsman 4: Good Will Huntsman (the prequel to the prequel's prequel and the sequel to the sequel's sequel) we'll be getting a genuine masterpiece.

This is the Uwe Boll-est movie Uwe Boll never made. Stars this big are just not supposed to appear in movies this incompetent. Half an hour in, I gave up and started imagining it as an early 1990's direct-to-video stinkbomb, with Leo Rossi as the Huntsman, Cynthia Rothrock as the Archer, Deborah Shelton as the Evil Queen, and Yancy Butler as the Ice Queen. I'd have preferred that movie, honestly.

The Huntsman: Winter's War is the latest in the never-ending trend of generic, bland and soulless cash cow fantasy films, as well being a sequel no one wanted. There's some decent production design, Charlize Theron hams it up to a somewhat enjoyable degree, but beyond that it is nothing more than an uninteresting film that lacks any engagement.

The Huntsman: Winter's War is the prequel/sequel you didn't think you wanted, and it turns out that you were right. We didn't need to explore any more of this universe or catch up with any of these characters. It's another bland movie set in a generic world that's populated by largely uninteresting characters. It's better than its predecessor only because it has a sense of humor, and because the climax isn't altogether terrible - although it's had very misleading marketing.

I am so bored by this that I can't even be bothered to write a witty review here.

Chastain and Hemsworth were unbearable, mainly down to their "accents". This film is a tonally bi-polar sequel who grew-up being told it was a prequel. If that metaphor doesn't work for you, well it's as well thought-out as this movie. The best bits were the dwarves joking around on a DnD-style treasure hunting adventure. Blunt is at least semi-convincing as the melodramatic naive youger sister, but it's not enough to provide relief from the otherwise banal plot.

It's fine. I haven't got anymore than that, it's watchable without being memorable.

I'm glad to see other people pointing out the pretty misleading marketing involved in this movie; marketed as a prequel, but not. I didn't particularly have expectations going in, but I came away entertained enough. There's totally a market for this movie. The performances are kinda forced and the story is generic fantasy, but I mean... that's what fairy tales are, so, that's not a bummer to me. I wonder how much K-Stew got paid for her two seconds of last-movie-recap screen time? It was okay.

Lame fights, lame direction, lame CGI, lame look (the costume design was really cool, the clothes themselves looked too fake, though), lame accents....lame everything. With the sole exception of Emily Blunt who is, unsurprisingly, quite the opposite.

I'd largely forgotten about Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) when this sequel was announced, and having just seen it, I've also pretty much forgotten the entirety of this one, too. The actors all seem to give it their best, but they weren't given much to work with. Just like the first one, I mostly found this one to be boring. It's just a poorly-thought-out clusterf*ck mix of various fairy tales and epic fantasy movies. I say just plain avoid.

Is this a franchise now? Are there going to be more of these things? Maybe for the next one The Huntsman can go on the hunt for an interesting plot. Aggressively average.

The first movie featuring The Huntsman was an underdog of a movie that I thought would crash five minutes in, strangely, it was actually pretty damned good. Apparently, the four year gap killed my enthusiasm for this re-imagined fairy tale. It doesn't help that every character here has a paltry excuse for a backstory shoved in your face as if it's a supplement to the lacking action taking place. Emily blunt is the worst offender, she's a folded over version of the paper thin Ravenna.

It's not bad. It's not terribly good either, but it sort of does provide the bland fairytale story it sets out to.

Even the moral lessons and learning opportunities that you'd typically point kids to in a fable or fairy tale have pretty much been chained up somewhere in the Ice Queen's dungeon, never to be seen onscreen. It's not that this visually picturesque but overgrown pic is outright rotten. It's just that it's unpruned, shall we say. Like that tangled fairy tale forest most sensible adventurers steer clear of in the dark of night. (pluggedin.com)

A few good parts, mostly not so much. You'd have thought that would have been better what with the cast. The plot was pretty scatter brained.

A lot better than the original. Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and Emily Blunt really throw themselves into their roles. Not perfect but not a bad watch, either.

There's a part where Theron answers a question with "Yes... no" and that sums up my main criticism: the characters have weird motivation, the screenwriters couldn't make up their mind what they wanted. Besides that, it's kind of enjoyable with a sense of humour. Not great, but not dreadful. Decent visuals and Emily Blunt doing what she can. Remember girls: all you are supposed to do is find love and not be ugly... that's what the movie is telling you.

I enjoyed it as much as I did the first, Theron was just as creepy and I must say that I'm impressed with the costumes and make-up. *Recommendable

This doesn't have Kristen Stewart and her special brand of acting. It also doesn't have any reason to be a sequel to the first one and they're really stretching to make the connection. It has Chris Hemsworth, costume porn and some female dwarfs I like. It also has a really awful plot, clunky dialogue and wooden acting. Better than the first one, but can they please stop making these? If I want a fairytale crossover, I've got OUAT.

Appallingly heavy-handed and dreary SNOW WHITE follow-up (minus Snow White!) is a wrong-headed misfire on every front; Chastain and Hemsworth have better mother-son chemistry than the wet fizzle of their romantic chemistry, while Blunt and Theron play a tiresome game of who can shout the loudest. Sole (comparatively) bright moments are provided by Frost and Brydon who make for amusing dwarves. A real waste of time and talent.

A little clumsy addition to the Snow White story, but you can always bank a movie on Chris Hemsworth abnormal God-like anatomy.

Without a doubt I thought Hemsworth was the one that was out of place here. His performance lacks and is forced. However, everybody else I thought was wonderful. Interestingly enough some scenes reminded me of LOTR/The Hobbit and Narnia? Anyway, The Huntsman Winter's War was entertaining. 61/100.

The idea of spinoffs are right. In the case of Huntsman I did not quite understand the point. Well, of course I understand take the money and run aspect but the story did not make much of sense. Everywhere you looked at there was couples, all actions were based on love between man and woman, or lack of it. That was fantasy. Easily forgettable.

So much better than the first one, and CGI are quite good, with some visual effect/camera angle quite effective. Also the dwarves are funny.

Proof that visual competence & A-list acting talent means nothing w/out a good script. The film often ignores important details that might have given us reason to care. We're TOLD the "lands" are screwed if the Ice Queen gets the mirror, but since we're asked to sympathize with her first, it's hard to buy. & what exactly would change for Hemsworth's forest-dwelling hero if she did? He's not even motivated by revenge. The romance fails too since the "conflict" feels contrived & is easily resolved

This was a pleasant surprise, the only thing that I felt didn't entirely work was the evil queens, honestly it's a bit much at this point. Everything else about the world, the aesthetics, the music and the characters I really liked. The writing is a lot smarter than average and it even has better dwarfs than the previous film. Thumbs up.
