What the fuck?! The film is severely lacking in closeups, the editing sucks, the color looks like it's hand-painted, and the acting blows more than a prostitute at a tuba convention. Who the hell directed this crap?! >:(

Looks like Méliès took some mescaline and decided to remake A Trip to the Moon. Pretty fun.

It's neat to see special effects in their infancy like this, but I can't say that these old shorts are very entertaining to watch 100 years later. For that my score mostly reflects paying my respects to the pioneers of film more than anything else.

Less plausible and less entertaining than A Trip to the Moon, but the Melies' hand-colored films are nice to watch, the adventure is interesting, and the scenery, effects, and fantasy are great as always.

Great sets and nice use of colors. The beginning drags a bit but nothing terrible. A pretty amazing movie with great stunts and effects.

I couldn't find a good orchestral track for this, so I just listened to Echoes by Pink Floyd. Gonna start doing that with all silent movies. Maybe even talkies too.

Georges Méliès revisits the idea of a scientific voyage to fantastical places, based on a play by Jules Verne (writer of A Journey to the Centre of the Earth & Around the World in 80 Days, et al) - Méliès produces another imaginative & humorous little film but I don't like it as much as 'Voyage to the Moon' which I found more iconic & charming.

Many ancient films actually look better as time goes on. This is not one of them. The primary point of interest is how primitive all this stuff is, compared to what we 21st-century film buffs are used

Mostly filmed theater, so save for some impressive early effects, the sets and hand-coloring it's all rather uninteresting.. I prefer "A Trip To The Moon" which is shorter, and less sophisticated in terms of effects, but ultimately the same film, less boring and so, more entertaining..

A masterpiece for it's time, especially in terms of a longer form of story-telling and set design. It gets compared to A Trip to the Moon but this does feel like a step up in terms of movie making, even if it isn't quite as entertaining.

Not as good as Trip to the Moon, "The Impossible Voyage" has a similar plot but contains a very boring beginning. It's still incredibly unique for its time and even by today's standards.

My suggestion is to watch Melies's films sans the narration the current DVD versions include, and put on some music that lifts up your soul, and just let the images wash over you. I used Howard Shore's score for "Hugo," and like it did in that film, it fit Méliès's original films beautifully.

A trippier Trip to the Moon.

Might this be the first steampunk movie? There's a Monty Python-esque feel to the film, which takes about a dozen adventurers on some pretty bizarre expeditions. There were two destructive crashes of their craft, which turned into mere inconveniences; I would have preferred a little more screen time from the giant squid than another crash.

If A Trip To The Moon was twice as naively zany and incredibly hilarious this would be it. There's some genuine comedy here too, not just unintentional hilarity. "They waste no time on their way to the inn," the narrator calmly states as their carriage comes bursting through the inn wall. The dry wit here is remarkable, and the fainting woman is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life.

Yes, it feels essentially like a remake of A Trip to the Moon. But I like this one a bit more. The sets are more lavish, the effects are more interesting, and the overall journey is more exciting and funny.
