The best part about this film was the tsunami scenes; they were pretty well done. The rest was just emotionally-manipulative Hollywood Oscar-bait. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor did alright with what they had to work with. The dialogue was very basic, unrealistic and sometimes plain awful. I might have been emotionally affected by some scenes if it weren't for the terrible dialogue. Not an entirely bad film, just a very disappointing one, which had a lot of potential.

Bayona fills his version of the biggest human tragedy/natural disaster of the 21st century with histrionic horror genre tricks -- suspenseful scares, surprise appearances and a haunting imagery --, trying to gain attention at all costs. It's just a shocker, a tearjerker that merely simulates a true story of survival in order to manipulate audiences' emotions. I just felt that I've seen a genre-friendly flick or a thing directed by Emmerich. It's the Passion of the Christ of disaster movies.

Yes it's a tearjerker. Yes it has standard cliches. The real "impossible" feat here was finding a cast of kids who weren't over emoting annoying little shits. Ewan McGregor is decent and he can really pour on the grief but this was definitely Naomi Watt's show. As someone who saw the aftermath of the Tsunami disaster in person, the location and people portrayed were startling realistic right down to the aging German tourist with beer belly and tattoos. The disaster scenes were very well done.

An incredible film about the human spirit that rose above my concerns of it being "Western-centric", despite being about one of the biggest tragedies to hit the East. The film is about the human spirit, and it provides a message that ultimately is blind to race when it comes to people coming together to help them overcome the impossible. The entire cast is great, Watts and the oldest child are the standouts.

A pretty strong depiction of the 2004 tsunami through the eyes of a western family. I found this fairly conventional with the exception of some standout scenes: the wave hitting sequence is incredibly intense; the depiction of the gentle Thai women helping Watts was spot on; and the late flashback/dream was rather beautiful. But I felt the film should have ended several scenes earlier - it got pretty saccarine towards the end.

Some minor issues with dialogue aside (the oldest child Lucas' lines felt forced and unconvincing at times), The Impossible is a strong movie, anchored by superb cinematography and a palpable sense of despair that somehow only ratchets up in intensity as the movie continues. Harrowing from start to finish, it is not trying to be a look at the cumulative impact of the tsunami but rather a snapshot of one family's attempts to cope with the immediate aftermath, at which it succeeds admirably.

The tsunami scene is pretty genuinely terrifying, while the performances are across the board terrific and some moments are truly heartwrenching. It does have a couple notes that ring false, especially the terrible musical score which threatens to overwhelm many of the film's most touching moments.

You can argue that telling the story about a British family in the midst of so many native deaths was silly (of course there were lots of other movies made including ones that show just this) but it does not detract from the quality of the film. Also I probably would not have watched any foreign films regarding the disaster anyways since the actors and effects and storytelling in general are usually not up to the same standards. Watts is great in this.

I'm not a huge fan of disaster movies to begin with but this one didn't change my mind on the genre. This movie can be broken into a few sections. 75% screaming, 22% crying and 3% touching moments worth watching. I almost wanted to put the film on mute (although I'm glad I didn't because it had a pretty good score) because it was just screaming and anguish for most of the film. Watts did fine and so did McGregor but the film itself just wasn't enjoyable to watch at all.

What's Impossible is how few Southeast Asians are affected by this dire tragedy in the film. While it shines a spotlight on an incredible survival tale, I have to agree with the criticisms of white-washing a disaster that affected Southeast Asians more than anyone else. It's as if this was produced just to tell the West that it hit white people too.

The first act of the tsunami and the hospital were worth my time. The part of the family finding each other seemed like Hollywood spray paint - glittery and cheap. I know this is based on a true story, but the running around and barely missing each other to build tension and suspense was ... cheap movie tricks. You could easily cut 30 to 45 mins from this movie.

Not as emotionally manipulative or socially and historically inept as expected. "The Impossible" is a very well made and genuinely quite powerful piece of cinema. Watts is outstanding, McGregor is almost as good and the child actors suprisingly watchable also. Grueling, hard to watch at times, overly sentimental but heart-warming, emotionally manipulative but heroic, chock-full of unbelievable coincidences and children who don't act like children, and yet I became so totally absorbed in the story before my eyes that I probably wouldn't have noticed someone committing a murder right in front of me in my living room. The true story of a spanish family's less than perfect thai vacation, reimagined for blond anglo-saxons. Bayona is more than capable at recreating the horrors of the catastrophe and the actors (blond as they might be) do excellent jobs through and through, but it feels somewhat tasteless in it's consistant and insisting focus on a handfull of white europeans, considering the +300.000 locals who lost their lives that day.

A well-made film, but one I absolutely hated. How dare this film use one of recent history's worst natural tragedies to market Zurich Insurance. I was in shock at that final scene, as the rich white family board their private jet and escape. 220,000 actual people died in this tsunami. To use it for advertising is beyond the pale.

The tsunami is terrifying and spectacular. I just thought it was somewhat offensive that, in the midst of so much destruction and tragedy, we are asked to care so much about this one attractive, white, British family. It was very long and drawn out, and started to feel very manipulative and formulaic.

Harrowing, utterly absorbing family drama-cum-horror movie, with Watts sensational as a plucky mother, matched by Holland's precise, very natural performance as her oldest son. McGregor is also very fine and touching in support, but where the film really shines is in its convincing, you-are-there evocation of the dreadful disaster, which puts many similar 'disaster movies' to shame. Perhaps some of the coincidences in the deneumont stretch credibility, but emotionally they ultimately pay off.

On the strength of performances by Watts, McGregor, and Holland in combination with some amazing technical accomplishments in depicting the horrible tsunami, I'm giving this one a pretty strong recommendation with the prayer that none of us should ever find ourselves in similar circumstances, but with the added prayer that if we do, we'll have the strength of character to offer a hand to anyone who might need it.

Despite some very implausible reactions - no one ever says "what the hell is going on?!", for instance - it is emotional as fuck and I was prepared to give it a 3. But when the ending came, I was seriously annoyed to find that the family AND the whole production were Spanish. Wait a minute. Effort was clearly expended in recreating the experience of the tsunami, but all elements nevertheless follow standard operating procedure, with a far too obvious use of music as a way to signal the correct emotion at every turn. There is, indeed, something a bit disconcerting about the focus on the experience of one European family on vacation, given the scale of loss of life (estimated deaths being approximately: Indonesia, 167,000; Sri Lanka, 35,000; India, 16,000; Thailand, 8,000, etc.).

For whatever reason, I'd always had a strong desire to see this movie, yet I was still taken aback by just how great it is. It's one of the most exhausting, toughest movies I've seen, but in a good way. The filmmakers pay special attention to putting together a movie that truly makes you feel what is happening, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. What strikes me most is that this is a story about normal people; the roles aren't flashy, but it's a tour-de-force of acting by the whole cast.

Firstly, lets all apologise for this western family being western, and the fact that this film was about their plight in a terrifying natural disaster. I will have to look out for "the making of the Impossible", as the events were truly amazing to see depicted on screen. Naomi Watts is a past master at getting beaten up, and boy, does she suffer in this; that was one nasty cut! An absolutely amazing performance and the emotional reunion of the boys with their father was brilliantly acted by all.

Good film with good visuals and performances. Emotional and powerful, it never really became boring for me. The Tsunami was really well done, and damnit the kids + Ewan McGregor really pulled on the heart strings. I read a lot of complaining about how western the film is, but, it is a true story about a western family and I thought it was well done. I am taking off points because of the gimmicky sequence when the dad and son keep barely missing each other at the hospital. Totally unnecessary and completely changed the tone of the film negatively.

Incredibly well made and the performances are spectacular, so I forgive the lazy writing. It has faults, notably the lack of any visible suffering on part of any Asian - the only Asians with lines in this film are doctors or nurses. It feels strange, though the film tries hard to make contextual sense of it. I must have teared up at least 5 times and was intensely moved for most of its duration so I give this film my full approval regardless. Plays powerful notes about love and the human spirit.

Cons: the score is overbearing and adds excessive melodrama; the dialog is a bit amateurish and unoriginal. Definitely an emotional film, The Impossible thrives off the guilt written all over the faces of the more then capable actors portraying the part. At times the emotion is too much to bare, and you feel yourself tearing up, but beyond that it is filled with genre cliches and over used plot devices that help drive home the impossibility of this family re-uniting. The first half hour is pretty astounding in terms of a fictional, visual document of this terrifying tragedy. The rest of the film succeeds as emotional catharsis, even as it careens dangerously close to manufacturing sentiment on occasion, especially through a quiet, heart-tugging score that accompanies many of the later scenes. Loved the scenes of natives helping tourists, of simple kindnesses, and of Geraldine Chaplin emerging from the shadows for one magnificent moment.
