Surprisingly sweet and warm comedy that somehow manages to overcome its incredibly conventional plot and consistent stabs at menial, physical comedy through ensemble chemistry (Buscemi and Carell play off each other wonderfully) and - not least - some outlandish non-sequiturs out of the far, far left field. Watching Burt Wonderstone trying to pull off a two-man-show all on his own - and with a straight face worthy of Buster Keaton - was nothing short of hilarious. "Ever since I was boys..."

Came out at a point where I had really thought that Carrey and the world in general were starting to outgrow this brand of asinine comedies. I really wasn't interested, and I definitely wasn't impressed. Maybe if they did that hammer a nail into their nostril trick and it was real and they permenently damaged their brains in real life, maybe then I'd laugh, but I found nothing in this funny.

Wow, I didn't expect it to be GOOD, but I expected to have a few stupid laughs. It's shockingly unfunny, considering who's in it. Also, protagonists in comedies don't necessarily have to be likable, but in this case Burt Wonderstone's redemptive journey just made me angry. He's awful.

Story wise there is not one single surprise in the very limited bag of tricks that is pulled from a very tired formula. Race drivers, ice skaters, supermodels, pet detectives... why not magicians? Even so, Scardino wrestles with tone, and the show wobbles from trying to be an endearing story of friendship to LOUD NOISES. I can't say it made me want to kill anyone I didn't already have on my list for the day, and Carrey is worth a laugh or two, but great movie magic this is not.

I did not expect this to be solid. It won't blow your mind or anything but the cast is more than competent and it has some funny bits.

More like the "Incredulous Dork Weinerdick." ZING. It starts off decent enough, but then Steve Carell is Steve Carell and you realize you're no longer watching a movie, you're watching Steve Carell. The point at which the scriptwriters throw in the towel is painfully obvious (keep an eye out for the watermark that reads "merry fuck you to all, and to all a good night") and even Popol Vuh mudman Jim Carrey cannot save this fragrant floater from the cyclonic pull of the crapper's flush.

There were some very funny moments in this movie but overall it wasn't a very meaty comedy. The casting in the movie was really well thought out. I thought Jim Carrey did a great job. Steve Buscemi was in the background a lot, which is normal for him when he acts in comedies. Olivia Wilde was pretty good, but I was pretty shocked when she and Carell's character kissed. It was a lazy love story that was obviously added in for boxoffice mojo or some other idiotic reason.

Thank goodness for a funny comedy. I think the key was limiting Jim Carrey's screen time. He's good in small doses but can ruin a film with too much exposure. Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi did alright in this but didn't really shine. Olivia Wilde can honestly be in every movie and I wouldn't mind. What was the true star of this film was some of the jokes and the writing. I was rolling with laughter in several scenes. This movie wasn't perfect and sometimes dragged but when it was good it rocked

Slight, silly, and sketchy, but packed with enough great, unforgettably weird and amusing bits to make it worthwhile. Jim Carrey cries about how great a magician he is. Olivia Wilde turns Steve Carell's crumpled-up five-dollar bill into a butterfly. Carell shows up at a Vegas old folks' home, and there's an elderly Elvis impersonator calling bingo. Lots of that kind of stuff. I had a fairly good time.

I had fun with this movie. At times it suffers from pacing and a couple of lackluster scenes, but on the whole it lets you kick back and enjoy a silly time. Moments where I think it really hits the mark is when it ventures towards parody and exaggeration of the magic industry, people, social ideals etc. in a similar way to what Zoolander did with the fashion scene. It's got some great laugh-out-loud moments and, as absurb as it sounds, that's not always a given with a lot of comedy films.

Jim Carrey is great in this. In fact, most everyone is pretty damn good except for Steve Carell, who still gets comedy roles for some reason. The laughs are few and far between but Carrey is good every time he appears.

Comedy about magicians in Las Vegas is neither incredible or wonderful. A talented cast that includes Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi, Alan Arkin and Olivia Wilde is wasted on horrible dialogue, dull jokes and predictable plot turns. Jim Carrey is great as a David Blaine type street magician, but he only has a few scenes. Worst of all, the magic is underwhelming and doesn't feel magical. It's still watchable, but aside from Carrey's scene-stealing I was left unimpressed.

I may have enjoyed this more than I should have. I just can't help but love the cocky, asshole attitude of both Steve Carell and Jim Carrey's characters. The movie is totally ridiculous but I feel the entire plot worked. I laughed a lot so the movie did its job. The majority of the cast is enjoyable. It might not be for everyone but I'm going to recommend Burt Wonderstone for those who want a mindless night of absurd comedy. 3.5 STARS

Burt's journey from innocent kid to arrogant/tragic adult and back (figuratively) is a little choppy and unfounded, but compelling, and offers decent comedy (see his hot-box antics, solo two-man trick) to go with a few sweet moments (see his magic show with Rance at the care home) and fun tricks (see the crazy climax). Buscemi's oft-neglected Anton (see his third-wheel moment at the motel), Carrey's hardcore rival magician, and Gandolfini's self-absorbed hotel owner are fun secondary characters.

I can't really say this was disappointing because my expectations were pretty low. Still, it was pretty lame. The world of magicians isn't a bad idea for a setting, but the plot is just the same comedy story you've seen a hundred times before. I like Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi, but they weren't anything special here. Jim Carrey was pretty good, for what the role was. But overall, it just wasn't funny, and I was left feeling empty.

This movie should be flat-out hilarious. It should be rowdy, wild, obnoxious fun. Talk about unseen potential. 'Burt Wonderstone' is a bust of epic proportions---it's INCREDIBLY BORING! Nothing funny really happens outside the occasional flair of Carrey. Carrel's character is a jerk and unlikable, the plot never really moves, the script does nothing exciting or witty with the magic angle, and most of all---it's not funny at all.

Critics are jaded and people want everything to make them laugh like Anchorman, or whatever the hell their favorite modern comedy is. But the thing is, Burt Wonderstone is funny! It really is, it's funny! Carrey gets the biggest laughs for sure, but the entire ensemble gets more than their fair share of jokes. It looked like a fun film for Carell and company to do, and the fun infectiously oozes off the screen.

Early Jim Carey gave us some crap movies (Dumb and Dumber anyone?), and we have come full circle (without the screaming and facial antics). In this Toy Story meets Billie Maddison movie we get a dose of nostalgia with a heavy dose of crazy. The movies heart is in the right place but it fails to deliver. Although Carell does a fine job, Bruce Almighty fans look elsewhere (this movie is a few grades down from Evan Almighty). It starts bad, ends bad, the middle is watchable, maybe even enjoyable.

The film's opening sets the tone for the ridiculousness on tap and the first act pours on heavy. Despite how glaringly transparent the story is, it's in the scene to scene interactions and comedy where the film carries itself. Wonderstone instead stays close to the chest and will ultimately be an unmemorable experience. But for a quick two-hour escape rife with laughs out absurdity this film is a hit.

I expected little and was rewarded with this fabulously funny film. I laughed and occasionally cringed but enjoyed the ride immensely. Steve Carell is suberb as Burt Wonderstone but Jim Carrey almost steals the show with his character's gruesome and slightly deranged nemesis character. This is a very good modern comedy and not worthy of some critics' bah humbuggery.

I probably like it more than it deserves, but can't deny this was a quite enjoyable, if lightweight movie. The films success comes from its strong cast; Carell, Carrey, Buscemi, Arkin & Wilde are all very watchable, & manage to add a little bit of class, subtlety & volume to what would have been without them a vapid & charmless movie. There are times where everything gets a bit flat, but there's also some entertainingly dark moments, & very funny scenes tucked away here. Fun, while it lasts.

Maybe it's my love of magic in all its guises, but I really enjoyed this movie. It's not always laugh-out-loud hilarious, but it's pretty consistently chuckle-worthy. Jim Carrey's spin on a David Blaine-esque stuntman is spot-on, and despite poor reviews, I really enjoyed Steve Carell's lead performance. Buscemi, Wilde and Arkin are fun too.
