Ti West is just doing his thing with no care for what's in vogue in horror, and I kind of love him for it. Here's a horror movie, populated by characters who genuinely feel like real people, and the scariest thing about it is its keen recognition of how we sacrifice our youth at the altar of dead-end jobs and shitty television. It's not scary, exactly -- that climax is pretty weak -- but it is haunting as hell.

Atmospheric use of barely audible static, shuffling feet and other offscreen noises helps build tension in a story otherwise somewhat bereft of exactly that. I found "The House of the Devil" underwhelming, but this - West's second jab at 80s throwback horror - works better. Helped by the brilliant minimalist sound design, a few good jump scares and - as theficionado notes - smart observations on youth being wasted on the young, "The Inkeepers" hints at even better things to come from Mr. West.

Thank goodness for directors like Ti West, who has brought back the minimalist horror in the age of torture porn. Creepy and atmospheric as the movie is, the true horrors here are not the ghosts and ghouls, but rather that deadly feeling of boredom when you're stuck in an unchallenging, dead-end job, the recognizable sense of cluelessness that keeps you from figuring out what to do with your life, and the hard-to-shake fear that the future might hold nothing worth waiting for.

clings to old-fashioned, kooky horror tropes as desperately as the inn--half-stripped and abandoned--clings to its last customers, and the near-jaded claire holds on to the last vestiges of her childhood innocence. ghosts are the ideal symbol for a lost, happier past of course, and (spoiler) the end may in fact be a happy one, as claire finds her ghosts and is preserved in her wide-eyed state forever, never forced to emerge into a modern adult world of poverty, disconnection and decay.

Wow. What an unnecessary movie. Seriously, it brings nothing new to the table and apart from some scenes that look like they might lead to something suspenseful (they don't) there isn't anything original, exciting or memorable about this. All that time and money, wasted on something that didn't need to exist in the first place.

Nothing against a slow buildup, but when you finally bring the shit, you better bring it good! This feels like being stuck in foreplay, until your girlfriend just gets up and out, with you screaming after her: "hey wait, i didn't do this crap for me, y'know?!!"

The real scare here is how fantastic Ty West was in creating empathy with the characters and then in turn not being able to do the same again with his The Sacrament. In any case, The Innkeepers will remain as the director's best showing of his skill on the fundamentals of horror.

Feels like a try hard attempt at a comedy horror like Ghostbusters crossed with Clerks. The comedy is pretty flat most of the time but there are some mildly humorous moments. The tone does shift near the end to actual horror but too little too late if you were waiting for it to happen. It feels bogged down with lots of nonsense dialogue and filler material. Its biggest failing is possibly the lack of suspense.

Much like West's The House of the Devil, this film defies modern horror conventions by keeping the scares to a bare minimum in the first two acts. This lets the film play our expectations against us - we've seen so many horror movies that we subconsciously know what's about to happen. When that fails us, we're disoriented and our sense of tension rises. Then when something scary does happen, its impact is tremendous. Yes, the ending is a bit weak, but the ride is so effective I don't care.

Solid haunted hotel movie that wrings most of its uniqueness out of a desire to make the characters and situation seem as real and mundane as possible. Sarah Paxton's performance has some bad notes, but the movie's solid atmosphere leads to some creepy moments. A well-shot slow burner that ends up being enjoyable but a little underwhelming.

I get the idea of making your protagonists horror fans to showcase a descent into madness not based in nonbelieving but more of a "be careful what you wish for" sentiment, but in doing so you also lose the ability to lure your audience into a false sense of security before laying on the scares. It also doesn't help when the scares themselves feel so lazy the creepypasta fan protagonists might as well have thought up of them.

Huge disappointment after expecting West to do what I've seen him do: perfectly mimic old tropes in service of something new, but I have no idea what he's going for here. It's like watching one of those ghost hunter tv shows where they continually find... nothing much. Then in the last 10 minutes we get actual horror but that's after 90 minutes of 2 utterly banal leads leading a banal life. Any potential suspense/atmosphere is repeatedly undercut by recurring very slight attempts at humor.

This movie is super, super slow. And while I don't mind creepy stuff building up slowly, there's not really much of creepy happening here. If you're going all 'well, in the end it must really freak you out', it doesn't. It's just bullshit and then you realize you wasted almost two hours on absolutely nothing.

Viewed October 31, 2016. Like House of the Devil, it takes its sweet sweet time, building likable characters and a believable world not too separate from our own, and then just hinting at bits of danger in the margins. It's an admirable approach, never boring without actually letting too much happen. It also creates an emotional connection to these characters that heightens all of the upcoming drama to particularly gruesome heights.

the first half of the movie is way too meandering, and aside from the last bit of it, doesn't offer much suspense. it also begins with an obvious screamer that sets the tone for what you can expect for the rest of the movie in terms of horror. sure the characters feel more real when compared to other horror protagonists, but that's a low bar to meet and also doesn't amount to much if the characters are dicking around doing nothing

There were good aspects of this film, especially the scenes revolving around the two main characters, but everything else is pretty bad. The supporting characters are all one note, the few details that the film uses to set up the conclusion make it predictable, and most of the scares are cheap fake outs. There's a core of a good film in there but this isn't it.

A great movie with a fun cast. At least up to the end where the movie really let me down. I mean I could have watched another 2 hours or a TV Series about the hotel and the odd people working and staying there. The ending just doesn't say anything one way or the other about what was going on. Also the ending was too abrupt and that was disappointing.

Ti West excels at build-up and atmosphere but he hasn't quite figured out how to make the climax in his movies fully satisfying. The Innkeepers puts you at the edge of your seat but then can't execute as well as you hope. The ideas and 85% of the movie work, it's just missing something small at the end.

Its budget is visibly pretty low, and it's not exactly the most well-crafted horror flick out there, but this is unabashedly old-school and provides more than its share of kicky ghost story fun. So many horror filmmakers these days neglect to imbue their films with atmosphere and personality, forgetting that these are the elements that make the scares stick. In THE INNKEEPERS, the scares stick. Also, Sara Paxton is really, really cute.

The Innkeepers is all buildup and little payoff, or putting it in another way, all the good the film does in its first two thirds is undone by disappointing last third. Ti West could teach other horror makers a thing or two in atmospheric tension to create the suspense, which unfortunately is the only thing his film does well. It sorely lacks the last act punch of The House Of The Devil. What it has instead is a wafer thin plot, few good scares, and a rushed denouement.

The fact that the hotel is about to close -- leaving its rooms for Madeline's ghost -- is less about the financial situation than youth emptiness, remarked by the first dialogue between Claire and the actress she loves. She just says she doesn't have any ambitions or big dreams of becoming an actress too and that she's just working there for now -- even knowing that her job is already gone. Claire's life is as disposable as her own job. And you can blame the crisis on the ghost.

I wouldn't say any given stretch of The Innkeepers excites me as much as the first hour of The House of the Dead, but it's at least as accomplished on the whole. West is a pro at exploiting the fear of being alone in a big house late at night, and his characters are so well-drawn that empathy alone makes his scares much more effective than they otherwise would be. If he has a weakness, it's resolution, but he's so effective at setup and mood that it scarcely matters.

The characters were great; Claire was likable, had personality and didn't feel forced. There was good, friendly chemistry between her and Luke, who was also really likable. I just don't know. It was sort of creepy, due to the sound design (if you can, watch it with headphones or a really good set up) but otherwise it was trying too hard to be different from everything else and ended up just being the same - if that makes sense. It isn't the revolution in horror all these 4 and 5 star reviews I keep reading were talking about, I have no idea where that came from. I suppose I've seen too many films to just not know whats going to happen, perhaps ruined it for myself

Focused a bit too much on being indie and not enough on being coherent. Random characters with unconvincing motives listening to canned obscurity when they're not walking slowly through the dark. Rinse and repeat. On the other hand, the film makes a remarkably good use of sound (or the lack of it) to build tension, and I have to admit I flinched a few times during the last act. Even more conventional than The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers is a horror comedy about a haunted hotel. It's full of goofy false jump scares (to the point of annoying by the time something real happens), and seems purposefully naive, possibly made with a younger target audience in mind. It nevertheless kept me interested and entertained and eventually delivers the goods, which, while tamer than "adult" horror fare, show audio-visual flair and are rather creepy.

In a typical Ti West fashion, the build-up/payoff ratio in the Innkeepers is completely skewed in the favor of the former. After watching a bucket of old 80's horror movies and making the excellent "House af the Devil" Ti West apparently took to the internet with all it's Slenderman, Labyrinth games and the face of Linda Blair and decided to make a ghost story. Somehow, West manages to harness the tone, style and sense of time of 1990s films. His nostalgia is contemporary, but exquisitely refreshing because he shares with us a sentimental mnemonic that we know we'll never completely forget. His signature slow-burn anticipation is weaker here than in House or Sacrament, partly because the payoff doesn't quite wholly compensate our forbearance. Still, West brings back the qualities of the genre's old school and churns out solid works.
