Self-important and sluggishly paced. Great performance by N. Kidman's hair though. Sean Penn needs to find a new character to play

Slightly apathetic writing and performances means that the ultimate meaning of this once-promising story is sadly lost. Avoid.

It's not groundbreaking or especially memorable, but the first half or so actually works fairly well. Pollack's sure-footed way with narrative develops the story to best maximize its potential. Eventually, it gets mired in too many twists, melodramatic backstory and mounting implausibilities. The two stars who anchor the film make for an interesting pair: Kidman's crystalline precision and Penn's raggedy earthiness create a strangely satisfying friction that's intriguing to watch.

I had virtually no idea what was going on by the halfway mark (goddamn face blindness) but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. Kidman and Penn put on a great show. Even though I didn't fully comprehend the somewhat convoluted script, I definitely felt the suspense and liked the general premise.

This is a very standard, solid, political thriller. Given then fact that the genre is simply not very interesting, I didn't find the movie exciting. Good acting from Nicole Kidman (looking better as she gets older) and Sean Penn can't save the unoriginal screenplay and standard directing.

An intelligent thriller from Sydney Pollack made better by the film's 2 stars, Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn who pull no punches with the material. Although the ending and final twist might let down the film somewhat, the film's intelligence ensures it rises above run-of-the-mill thrillers of its kind.

A modestly entertaining political thriller, most notable for being the first film to ever be allowed to film inside United Nations HQ. Pollack gets solid performances from Penn, Kidman and Keener, but a thriller must be considered heavily flawed when its tensest moment (the bus scene) comes in the middle of the movie.

Well-crafted--but not terribly distinguished. Seemed too long, possibly because watching a stakeout is about as exciting as watching an interpreter at work. Script featured occasional lame stabs at humor, and the involvement of the two leads was forced. Still, at least it didn't have 1) the annoyingly obligatory Sex Scene; or 2) Penn leaving with Kidman for Africa at the end. Penn good in understated interrogatory role--not so good when he tried to turn on the charm (the story's fault, not his).

Nicole Kidman is stunning! Sean Penn is an amazing actor. Sydney Pollack an incredible director. And yet, except for a bus scene involving a bomb this somehow winds up being one of the most boring, lethally non-thrilling "thrillers" ever made.

Much talent in front of and behind the camera, first movie ever to be shot at the real UN, plenty of meaty material... yet, it's kind of like _Gangs of New York_ in that it's all neat-o researched background; the story and characters are not at all inspired. I said after seeing this in theatrical release that Pollack ought to retire now, and it's a shame he didn't enjoy a few quiet twilight years before he passed on

Even if Pollack doesn't get much tension or pace out of the bomb sequence, he at any rate gets complexity. But the best reason to see the film is unquestionably for the cinematography of the Iranian-born Darius Khondji, the smooth, sleek, polished surface of the image, the clean, fresh air within (remarkably so for New York City), the warm, moist, and radiant flesh tones. The best reason to see it, in other words, is simply to see it. You can't ask for less.

Wins most of its points for being well written and having two solid lead performances. Penn and Kidman are good enough to paper over "The Interpreter's" cracks. There is no denying that at times the plot is messy, rushed and the pacing uneven. Pollack never quite decides if he wants to make a film about the exploration of grief or an all out suspense thriller, and this movie ends up sitting awkwardly between the two. Even so, "The Interpreter" is still a perfectly watchable drama.

This is a truly terrific thriller. There's really little else to be said without giving away plot points, or revealing acting choices, that are better absorbed while watching. Nicole Kidman leads this camera in this movie much the way Audrey Hepburn led it in Wait Until Dark; her intellectual and emotional context drives your every expectation. It also presents an interesting look inside the life of those who work FOR the people responsible international diplomacy.

I so wanted this to be actually...you know, good. Interesting premise, appealing leads. But the script--though reasonably cleverly plotted--is lousy, and only Kidman managed to (sort of) overcome that handicap that proved insurmountable for the rest of the cast. Even Sean Penn was not interested enough to find a way to make his character the least bit involving. And at over 2 hours, it's a good half hour too long. Some of those scenes felt ENDLESS.
