An essential deep dive into America's continued epidemic of violence, THE INTERRUPTERS celebrates the dedicated people working against long odds to provide restorative justice in their communities. They, like the film, are dedicated to the long haul, and both perform a massively overwhelming job that's also necessary and effective. The movie does right by its subjects by pulling them into the limelight, even if they are all too aware that they'll quickly fade back into the shadows.

Chicago is more than just a city and it's certainly more than the political talking point that it has somehow become when talking about violence. Steve James, with the help of Operation CeaseFire Chicago, showcases that in this devastating and, at times, hopeful documentary.

A very interesting subject with candid moments. It has its share of emotional moments but none are overplayed and the overall feel balances both the hope of the interrupters, the sense of hopelessness of those involved in violence and the frustration and confusion of everyone. No specific thing shown here is really new, but the portraits show a humanity that is lacking when reading a news article or internet discussions and does it's best to avoid right/wrong judgements.

One thing that makes James' movies so strong is that he works hard to give us characters of depth about whom we care a lot. He also effectively balances the bleak with the hopeful, for the most part without seeming too much the Pollyanna. Here, he focuses on three "Violence Interrupters" who intervene in real-time street disputes, hoping (and often succeeding) to prevent murders. We also get to know a few of those street people. We care about them all.

Something about it felt exploitative, bourgeois and moralistic at first, but my initial misgivings then gave way to lively interest and emotional reaction. The "CeaseFire" group are interesting people, particularly Eddie Bocanegra who is a rehabilitated murderer hell-bent on making amends.

If you love documentaries, this is one made just for you. Which is unfortunate, since people who don't love documentaries need to see it just as much. However many, I imagine, will find it a bit of a slog at points.

Speaking as someone who grew up scant miles from where the film is centered, it breaks my heart that Chicago is as riddled with gang violence now as it was 25 years ago. Maybe more so. James, as always does a great job humanizing everyone on the other side of his lens.

May be the most necessary film you'll see this year. But if you go to the movies in search of emotion rather than edification, don't let that word necessary deter you, because this is also one of the most engaging films you'll see this year, full of vibrant, complex real-life characters whose troubles and joys will stay with you long after the movie's done.

This nations got problems if the city the President hails from is matching the death toll in Iraq, sort your system out 'merica. From parent's who've given up on their children, to God being used as a scapegoat or replacement father, to a complete disregard for education institutions and their services. These interrupters are in the right place for stemming retaliation, but how do you curb something that has gone beyond the cliche that surrounds it?

From the director of Hoop Dreams but not a patch on that seminal documentary, The Interrupters follows a group of ex-gang members in Chicago as they attempt to talk the young'uns out of sorting their differences with violence. You're split between sympathising with the youths and hoping they just wipe each other out, and perhaps caring little about their fate is the problem. There are a few mini story arcs, the best concentrating on Flamo's redemption, but it's all just a bit 'samey' throughout.

Showcases some indisputiably ameliorative work 2 stem inner-city acts of violence, but it also provides such unflinchingly honest portraits of the education- (& values-) impoverished kinds of aggressive personalities (even when they're being playful) bred 2 survive in them it's impossible not 2 think their work amounts 2 little more than band-aids on a corpse. Like war-zones in the middle east it seems a certainty we'll be fruitlessly wrestling w/ exactly the same problem 100 years from now.

It is hard to hate a film that tackles this sort of subject. A lot of it is really powerful. The brick wall that says "I am next" is absolutely jawdropping. Still, some of the stories aren't so great. I found Eddie's sections especially boring.

Very emotional and powerful film that certainly can inspire change - both on an internal smaller scale and a large city-wide scale. Bermuda is proof of this as they have since implemented their own CeaseFire organization. Hoping that they will release the 162-minute version that played at Sundance.

Very interesting and very sentimental documentary. You get to see glimpses of street mentality, but the main focus is on interrupters - social workers who aim to prevent as much violence as possible. There are some interesting and inspiring characters working with them, mostly coming from criminal background themselves. At times it feels a bit too sentimental and glorifying, but it's all with good intentions, I'm sure.

Although the work being done by the violence interrupters in "The Interrupters" is commendable, you can't help but feel that it's all hopeless. Even with people that they have breakthroughs with, they have to rein back in for the most petty of arguments that turn into violent situations. The hopelessness makes the film feel much too long as it hits the same notes with no real growth. It's a sad fact, but it gets repetitive as everyone has such a similar story, which adds to your frustration.
