Gervais is too talented to be associated with this film. Honestly it was hard to believe he directed and wrote this. Maybe one laugh in the entire film. It also falls into some of the most painfully overdone cliches at the end of the film. A good premise but it's just not as clever or smart as it thinks it is. Very disappointing. The only good part is all the badass cameos.

Leaves an unpleasant taste behind. You have to look at The Office or Extras to realize there's something fishy going on. Gervais is either a sell-out or entangled in some kind of genius hoax; Either way, this movie sucks. If you like this film and would happily recommend it to your nearest and dearest, you're a full-blown idiot. Yes, I meant that in the derogatory sense !

Could have been a funny film, but like everything produced in Hollywood with a fun premise, it quickly devolves into an awful love story / base-level morality tale. Its obvious that very little thought was put into the conception of this story.

Interesting premise that builds to a hilarious climax at a press conference where Gervais' character explains the rules of the mysterious "man in the sky" to the bewildered masses. Only problem with this climax...it's followed by another 30 almost entirely laugh-free minutes as the subversive message is clumsily tossed aside in favor of a by-the-numbers "Graduate"-lite ending, only much sappier. Turn this one off as soon as the press conference ends. Oh, and by the way...BUDWEISER. PIZZA HUT.

A sort of inversion of Liar Liar, this disappointing flick detrimentally skimps on the details of it's unique world in order to present a sappy, cliched love story. Just because no one can lie, why is everyone obligated to constantly blurt out embarrassing truths? There's a few laughs to be had from the throwaway gags, but the jabs at religion are all safe and predictable, and none of the satire has any real bite. It's not a terrible movie, but Ricky Gervais is so much better than this.

Great start, so-so middle, horrible ending. This could have made for some great satire on consumerism and exhibitionism. Gervais deserves better roles. Points for the overflow of talent in minuscule roles (Bateman, appearing for 45 sec, probably has the best line in the entire movie).

Entertaining but jumbled. It started out as a broad comedy about the only man who knows how to lie, only to take a dark turn as a story about mortality and faith, and then wind up as a frustratingly predictable romantic comedy. The cameos were good, Gervais was his typical self, Louis CK stole most of his scenes, and Jennifer Garner was okay but her whole character was wretchedly, unabashedly vain and superficial for the entire film.

Kind of like Idiocracy, in which after a great beginning that promises some scathing satire, the film proceeds to beat its premise into the ground with unquantifiable enthusiasm. The formulaic parts here also underwhelm. I was much more interested in the world created herein -- one without deceit, guile or equivocation -- than in the romantic escapades of a snub-nosed fattie. The Coke advertisement is fucking classic, though.

It's easy to watch but with the magnitude of talent involved in this project and Gervais on script and lead this is far less than the least one expects. Gervais better stick with observational comedy than total fiction. A decent idea goes unexplored. Mainly the script fails while taking -lying- out of the equation (and reintroducing it) to give credit to intellect, everyone is totally dumb if they can't lie?

When I first heard of it, I immediately thought that the idea is quite interesting and it will at the very least serve as a good backdrop for some snappy comedic dialogues. But I saw it and I realized what a terrible idea it was. The premise got old pretty quickly and everything felt flat and uninspired. And then I learned that Ricky Gervais himself wrote this crap and I was like "what the hell!" How could such a funny guy write something so unfunny? A terrible terrible film.

Other than miscasting Jennifer Garner (which they sort of made up for with an upscale list of cameo appearances), this strange little story actually worked. It kept surprising the audience with satire, drama and outright belly laughs. And there was actually material for something more than shallow thought. The premise of the movie was not only about the human inability to lie, but the compulsion to volunteer the Truth, the source of most of the humor. Usually, they could have just shut tf up!

I will absolutely stand up for this movie, despite its tepid romantic comedy ending. For most of the movie, Gervais and Robinson manage to mix sentiment with smart satire. With that said, I think the movie will be ripe for a remake some day. The ending is really lukewarm and doesn't click with the rest of the movie.

Though a little heavy handed in its indictment of all religion its sweetness of a man discovering that lying has both dire and endearing qualities is refreshing..only Gervais could have pulled this movie off.

It just didn't click for me. It's weird, because I love the basic premise and more or less the entire cast right down to the cameos and I loved The Office and Extras, but the movie was just perpetually, bizarrely unfunny for the whole runtime. I had about three honest laughs through the entire 99 minutes.

I like Gervais, and I thought the concept was intriguing, but this movie is really a 'one trick pony,' and the concept gets tired in the last 30 minutes. Also, the love story was a bit saccharine. One other thing: who says that people who live in a world without lying have to be insufferable douchbags? There's a difference between lying and simply 'holding your tongue.' Overall, a disappointment.

'Tis true that comedy is usually found in the details, but if this is not your first encounter with Mr. Gervais, you will find the narrative lazy and predictable. Almost any other ending (including no ending) would have been better, choice of topics - uninspiring. If you somehow can ignore all that - the execution is not that bad, the aforementioned details exist in small talk or cardboard boxes, secondary cast are a-ok. N.B.: better Ricky Gervais content exists, go find it!

I enjoyed The Invention of Lying, but not as much as I hoped I would. Yes, there were plenty of funny parts, but the forced romance between Matt and Anna slowed the film down, and was also boring. These parts lacked emotion and humor, dragging the rest of the picture down. The rest of the film was funny though, and I found myself laughing or chuckling more often than not. Not excellent, but likely worth a watch, especially if you are a fan of Gervais.

Nice to see Gervais hasn't lost his touch after the terrible Ghost Town. But he's the cowriter here & though it's not Office funny(what is?) there's a witty insightful script here that goes far beyond the 1-note premise promised by the trailers. He smartly moves on to infinitely bigger subject matter& though that creates some questions, the movie is far better for it.Gervais also shows off some impressive previously unseen acting chops in a surprisingly moving scene, while Garner shines, as usual

A movie that had the chance to be great, but instead ended up being slightly above mediocre. The film is definitely helped along by great performances by Ricky Gervais and his supporting cast, especially the slimy Rob Lowe. However the film is brought down by the less-than-effective satire of Christianity and odd inconsistencies that pop up in the movie. I am a huge fan of Gervais but I can easily say I was let down here. Also, the constant cameos were a bit jarring.

While I appreciate the atheistic message, this film felt a bit boring. Mostly because it's a very typical and predictable romantic comedy with a twist. I really like Ricky Gervais and I was pleasantly surprised to see so many familiar and well-known faces, but that was not enough for me to truly enjoy this film. Some funny moments, some good emotional moments, but the plot has some big holes and inconsistencies, I feel like the premise could have been explored much, much better. Average film.

As an atheist I can appreciate Ricky Gervais' attempt at creating a mainstream story that touches on the issue of religion and it's power of deception on the world. It also had a lot of awesome cameo's but in the end it just wound up being unfunny, contrived and just pretty bad overall. I laughed a few times but not often enough whatsoever. I watched for about an hour just to see what would happen in the end which I saw coming from a mile away regardless.

It's almost...offensive, that such a great concept was wasted on this movie. Most of the best uses of it were done with 1 liners. Why would a world where everyone tells the truth mean everyone speaks every single offensive thought that crosses their minds? Why would it make every person on the planet "mate" based on gene pool and not personality? It's hard to care about the characters where every single one of them isn't human, besides Gervais.

I think that the problem was that this tried to do too much at once. The premise was promising, and if it just followed one path then I think it could've been one of the better comedies of 09. But what were given was a jumbled mix of three separate plots that each stole from one another's charm.

About as contrived as a story can get. The ultra frankness and brutal honesty parts were hilarious at first, but it gets old pretty quick. The take on god as the man-in-the-sky is a very humorous jibe at religion as being a big fat lie. Great stuff. But, overall the story is too pretentious and there were many lost opportunities to do much more with it. Jennifer Garner was entertaining but not stellar. Rob Lowe played the arrogant ass fairly well. And the others were mostly unremarkable.

Pretty funny, witty, and charming Brittish comedy. It's presented in a fresh, crisp manner and has some good satirical ideas along the lines of faith, happiness and the human condition. Unfortunately it's a bit thin at times, and too singular in its focus. The predictability factor, is, uh, predictably too high as well! But still a good effort, and I can't say that I detested it!

It's too caught up in pathos to have any real fun with its premise—but even more shameful is the sheer amount of talent it wastes. Gervais is cast as an unfunny, simpering sad sack. Phillip Seymour Hoffman floats by in an unremarkable bartender role; Jason Bateman plays a straight doctor for some reason; Tina Fey is relegated to using the ‘F' word (not that one, the other one) repeatedly, in an utterly painful display. The list goes on. Just a weird total-misfire of a movie.

Gotta go the other way on this one. There's a beautiful humanistic message in this movie. It's simple, and at times it's easy to feel that Gervais could have done more. More valuable satire, more sweeping criticism, but what is there is good. Part of Gervais' comedy, at least to me, seems to be were you fill the rest in. The story is never so good as when you have to tell half of it. A lot of the jokes are like that, they're half starters. Nonetheless, a good film. I WOULD recommend it, fred. ;P

The main idea is clever and the writers have fun with it, although from a certain point on they sideline it a bit for the rather uninspired love story and the true but trite social commentary (rich bullies vs. poor but kind dudes; poor guy turns rich but he's still unhappy, etc.) that came with it. On the other hand, the cast is way more star-studded than you'd expect and Gervais has a go at religion more than once - maybe not as fiercely as in his stand-up shows but still pretty eloquently.

WHEN RICKY GERVAIS CRIES IT MAKES ME WANT TO CRY. But I found it really annoying how not lying was oftentimes interpreted as having no inner monologue. Or no shame. Or, if that society existed, that it would resemble ours so closely.

Ricky Gervais just can't catch a break with American audiences, but that's largely due to the fact that none of his American films have been of quite the same quality as his British television series (The Office, Extras). Invention is a funny film, even hilarious in spots, but despite the numerous cameos, it never rises above the level of "pretty good," and it probably only reaches that if you have an existing affection for Gervais' brand of self-deprecating humor.
