Universal clearly learned from their The Mummy misstep by getting talent involved with their properties, who seem to understand the genre. The Invisible Man's strength is how it uses the premise and how its slow burning first act uses restrain to create proper unnerving atmosphere. Eventually it does becomes a bit silly and some of the dialogue is downright horrid, but be that as it may, I'd still take this any day over whatever nonsensical clusterfuck The Dark Universe had turned out to be.

I thought the trailer had completely spoiled the entire movie. Boy was I wrong. Even when you think you know what's going on, there's always something behind the scenes. The twist towards the last twenty minutes of the film made me think about the rest of the movie differently, and I found that to be pretty clever. Moss is excellent as usual. I really dug the way Whannell shot everything too. The horror elements were handled with care as was the intrigue and it shows. Definitely see it!

A chilling tale of the power that abusers can hold, The Invisible Man is led by a compelling performance from Elisabeth Moss, great sound mixing, and confident if a bit inconsistent direction from Leigh Whannell. Sometimes the film loses focus to add in a cool visual moment or to bring in another layer to its already plenty-deep thematics, but it's good to see a classic tale get reimagined in such a quality way.

When the plot is as evidently traced as a Jumbojet landing stripe, one can't help but find the title of this film surreptitiously ironic. If only the invisible cloak could have also hid the massive plot holes and implausible motivations of our protagonists! Another vastly overrated mess that preaches to #Metoo choir

The tense scenes of misdirection and empty space are excellently done and feel unique in the horror genre. Other than that, this is a bland film with nothing but stock characters and dialogue. The subject matter is very topical, but is only utilised to lazily garner positive reviews from critics (mission accomplished) without actually having anything to say about this subject matter. Everything from the hallway fight to the end is trash.

This was pretty good. From everything I read, this is much different than it's past material, which is interesting. Whannell is a director who understands how to create horror through manipulation and psychology. It does a good job of making you feel uncomfortable because more often than not the horror is in every shot. It leaves a lot to insinuate and predict given its synopsis. It's just a little messy tying it up, but can be forgiven especially thanks to Moss's performance.

It's like there were two movies stitched together. A classic haunted house type horror with great tension, camera work, dread and directing....and then a shitty movie of the week revenge tale. It's watchable for the first two thirds, then becomes a bit silly. The sister is one of the dumbest characters ever. Literally believing the internet over her sister. I think Kevin Bacon's "Hollow Man" did a better job overall with the invisible man story. Shout out to Chevy Chase as well.

Another example of the all-powerful psycho terrorizing his subject in ever more creative and unlikely ways, but filled with modern empowerment buzzwords: gaslighting, victimization, the male gaze, the surveillance state. I welcome all this being treated by serious filmmakers, but here it is just stated and then neutralized into soap opera ludicrousness. Above all, the torment that torture geek Whannell inflicts on a trembling Moss is somewhat disgusting. Nice pans though.

Despite the film's annoyingly simplistic "woke" subtext (all white males are awful & even a prospective employer flirts inappropriately; all women are good & strong & even stronger than the built black cop), this is mostly an exceedingly well-crafted thriller. Although it essentially has nothing to do w/ the story it gets its title from, the shots of empty spaces are effective at generating suspense & the completely unpredictable twists that start an hour in make it ultimately riveting

You can run the risk of things looking silly when you put an invisible man on screen terrorizing people. It fell victim to that a couple times but for the most part it was well done with a great sense of atmosphere and tension. Definitely more psychological thriller than horror movie, I appreciated that. It's not amazing in any way but it's also not bad in any substantial way. Haunting score, good performances, some nice twists and turns. Ended up enjoying it more than anticipated.

While I am all for the rebooting of the Universal monsters as a whole and, differ from the critical appraisals by liking "The Mummy", this installment of the franchise massively disappointed me. By changing the titular man into an obsessive, abusive man by nature, we miss the nuance and depth of a man struggling with madness brought upon him by the same chemical that renders him invisible. And to that end Moss' portrayal as an abused woman didn't convince me either, mostly because of her face.

Standing out, if for nothing else, by being above-average within genres plagued by schlock, this leans into its atmosphere and insistent tone, making up for periodic moments of feeling like it may fly completely off its rails. Don't come to this for strength of performance or direction, but it can definitely be utilized to fill any horror void that you may be feeling. Between this and Upgrade, Leigh Whannell is carving out some worthwhile real estate, as this showcases much more good than bad.

This was a classic case of great horror cinema (direction, cast, photography, sfx, story) spoilt by some eye-rolling script cliches/stupidities. However, the fact that it is is so well shot and directed, with some terrifically intense and well shot scenes makes that secondary to the enjoyment the film provides. Sure, if someone smoked it could have all been settled long ago, but the acts "post-reveal" could easily have been a let-down, and it is to the directors' credit they weren't. Good film.

An excellent performance by Elisabeth Moss, a strong supporting cast, a clever script that keeps the hits coming, & a satisfying final act that ends things on a suitably grey note all make this genre-mashing psychological horror very worthwhile. While not without its flaws, it has enough positives to outweigh them, & is a rare example of a remake that not only sets itself apart from the original, but does so in a successful & unique way. Well-shot, well-acted, & definitely worth a watch.

Enjoyable but nothing exceptional. The biggest fault is how much you need to suspend your disbelief in regard to a Silicon Valley dork's obsession with one girl but also in regard to his strength (at times it almost seems like a superhero film). I would have preferred a more meditative exploration about the doubt that surrounds someone in Moss' position, as that is what makes the film modern, not the unimaginative special effects.

Not a bad horror film, even though it's more "thriller" than "horror". Elizabeth Moss is the perfect casting choice for this role, even if it is a bit of a typecast role. It's hard to overstate how excellent Elisabeth Moss is in this. It's a performance reminiscent of Farrow in Rosemary's Baby, dragging you through her emotional torment as her world turns upside down. I would say she carries the film, which one would expect of a low-budget genre piece, but the other elements of the film are also super-strong. The photography has a masterful grasp of space (more often negative space), the narrative is taut but surprising, and the scares are anything but cheap.

Absurdly silly chiller shows promise in a tense opening act; Whannel's expert horror craftsmanship marries to another brave and intense Moss performance. Deficiencies in Whannel's screenplay start to become apparent as the film progresses: clunky, awkward exposition inserted between plotting which makes little sense, especially in regards to the villain's inefficiently complex grand plan. Placing the big reveal at the midpoint means the second half has little else to offer.

File next to The Babadook and It Follows as modern horrors that attempt to deal with 'women's issues' that fail as both social critiques and genre entries. This type of thing is becoming too common now, and contrary to popular belief it is not 'intelligent' as it does all the thinking (i.e.not much) for you. Middlebrow critics lap this crap up, but horror fans should know better than to fall for these 'woke' like stunts. Some good shots though, especially in the opening scenes that held promise.

While it may not be as technically impressive for its time as the 1930’s one, it’s a really good movie. Not just as a scary horror film, the drama was good as well. I genuinely wanted the protagonist to go through as little as possible, since I already felt for her. Leigh Whannell has proved himself as a director after the average Insidious 3, with Upgrade and now this as really solid films for his career. I’d argue his scripts have gotten a lot better as well. Worth renting, maybe buying.

The Invisible Man is able to tackle abusive realtionship with great care and does an excellent job using it as a narrative backbone to make the monster more threatening. Tension can obviously be built around the Invisible Person may be anywhere concept but you need actors that can take that and turn into something. Elisabeth Moss did that. She took what was a basic horror plot and added layers to her characters fragile mental state. It adds a few twists and turns that keep things engaging while blending different troupes from different genres effectively to keep you focused. It doesn't have much of an ending, at least not one with any subtlety.

Whannell flips Wells' story completely, with very mixed results. I love the basic idea; the invisible man not as aberration, but as just another untouchable douchebag. And Moss is brilliant as ever. Too bad Whannell is still in jump-scare mode and can't tell the difference between a great suspense piece (the lingering cameras, the puff of breath) and just dumb horror movie logic that intellectualizes what should be primal and vice versa. Pretty good movie, but given to, say, Jennifer Kent...

Meh. Moss is excellent, but the pointed de-emphasising of the villain and the gossamer-thin characterisation deflate the tension instead of granting the story the universal quality Whannel was clearly aiming for. The film is at its best when it fails to resist the overwhelming pull towards schlock exerted by the material (the restaurant scene is gleefully shocking, as are the sundry GoPro extravaganzas); sadly, it is just as often repetitious and didactic.

This isn't a horror movie, it's a distress movie. It's not H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man (much to my disappointment), but I went in expecting a horror movie that might be entertaining and I think I got that. The villainous boyfriend is cheesy in his portrayal ("suprise"), making what is a fairly grounded thriller/drama suddenly feel very comic book in the final act. The main character is also a bit stupid sometimes, but smart main characters are practically extinct anyway.

A smartly crafted allegorical horror film that manages to thread the needle through its metaphor while still offering some relentlessly suspenseful sequences. The material is heavy enough, however, that it's hard to imagine returning to this film despite its quality. As effectively thrilling as it is, it's also not very fun because of how serious it is. The ending initially left a bad taste in my mouth, but the more I let it percolate, the more I see how well it lines up with its allegory.

Like Garland and Ex Machina, Whannell is rewriting the horror conventions for the 21st century. The Shakespearean mad scientists and chemistry experiments of the 1933 zeitgeist have been replaced with soulless tech executives and surveillance technology. Not to mention the feminism angle - a little on-the-nose, but something you'd never see in 1933 no doubt. Sandwiched halfway between the trashiest Blumhouse and Ari Aster, this is the kind of blockbuster I wish there was more of these days.

I like how it turns a fantastic ghost story into a scientific one, makes it believable. Therefore, it's much more creepy than average horror movies with ghosts.

I like what they did with this remake. The only i'll say not to spoil anything is that it has more of a horror feel.

This was a pretty solid take on the invisible man premise. I could feel this woman's anxiety, shes a great actress. She really sold the whole thing for me. I really liked the psychological aspect of it all, it was a pretty decent watch, Idk if it would be as entertaining a second time through though. this is pretty much a one and done movie.

Thriller efficace, avec un concept qui se respecte, et une réalisation adaptée. La plupart des séquences où l'héroïne est attaquée, et autres scènes d'action font sensation. J'ai juste eu du mal avec les personnages secondaires, et l'absence de psychologie.
