The Invisible Woman

Not all the jokes land in this comedy (especially in the repetitive middle when the scientist doesn't point out his creation to his financer when he gets the chance even though he spent the first half of the film trying to do just that), but the performances are quite good - especially the lead, the scientist & the butler, the verbal sparring is fun & the efx are still quite impressive for the time. The film also has a great climax with the lead doing far more than you might expect.

Screwball comedy with a little bit of sci-fi. I though it did well showning some 'erotica' under strict rule of the "Code' in Hollywood. You can't see the woman, right? So sexy stalkings getting dressed on those nice legs aren't amoral at all. A little better script, and some work on characters, who now are just charicatures, could have made this movie a real underdog winner.

And so comes the female touch to The Invisible... series. Takes away all the horror and makes it into a bubbly spoof transforming Virginia Bruce into thin air and letting John Barrymore ham up entire scenes in his wonderfully goofy way! Also got a Three Stooges style villains (including real Stooge Shemp Howard) wanting to steal the miracle machine for added stupidity! The Invisible Woman (1940) works for those tired of those horrors classics and need of a laugh at their expense instead!

Funny a bit.

A comedy with no laughs.....few things can compare to this pain. Worse still, when it comes in the form of rapid fire screwball.

Decently fun, has a good time being scandalous, but it never seems to lead anywhere and the comic relief butler drags it down.

The movie isn't very funny even if the cast tries hard. It does manage to be amusing most of the time. Seeing Shemp was a nice plus.

Occasionally amusing, and Barrymore manages to preserve a little dignity.

Too much comedy to take this seriously.
