Brad Bird is a genius. This is hand-drawn American animation at its finest, on par or better than anything Disney has produced since The Lion King. Tremendous voice acting and unique, memorable characters take us through the adventures of Hogarth and his giant robot buddy. It's a throw-back to the popularity of comics and sci-fi in the 50s, and the nods towards McCarthyism and the Red Scare are nice touches that elevate this beyond a kid's movie. Terrific script with a touching, perfect ending.

The last best hand-drawn animation film (from American studios, anyway). Bird's debut film is loaded with little details that compliment the 50s sci-fi/fantasy themes. The voices are all well-cast, and it's just a joy to watch: funny, honest, and surprisingly endearing. Bird immediately establishes himself as one of the best storytellers working in the medium, and his skill has only become more refined since. It's an excellent film that more people need to see.

I feel stupid for not having seen this sooner. It looks wonderful, the 50's atmosphere is great and it has a ton of heart. Or a heart that weighs a ton. And I didn't get teary-eyed at the ending, honest. There was just something in my eye.

An excellent kids film from Brad Bird. Occasionally, it gets a bit overdone and schmaltzy, but overall, Bird hits the right tone throughout as he delivers a film about friendship, gentleness, and sacrifice. This is no more evident than in the final sequence, which wordlessly progresses toward a most satisfying final moment. That Bird is willing to allow the pictures to do the talking in this and other moments shows a trust in the audience that I for one appreciate.

This felt like a generic family cartoon movie done right. It was legitimately funny at times, and while the emotive appeals were a little saccharine, they were well-earned and good-natured. Also, as a film about identity and threat, I think it was surprisingly dexterous and clever.

Very nice animation and the titular character has some charm to him. I had some nagging questions about him, but in the end I was happier that he was left ambiguous. The film's heart is in the right place, even if it's not executed with much depth or finesse. The real dealbreaker for me is the protagonist: an obnoxious, grating, poorly-acted little boy. And I didn't find the gags very funny, nor was I particularly moved when I was supposed to be. But I enjoyed the overall spirit of the thing.

Truly convincing animation, but where have I heard a story like this? Boy finds, befriends, and hides a creature; it is accidentally revealed and adults want to kill it/take it away; it saves the day. Gag! And Hogarth is a funny name.

Absolutely wonderful--one of my very favorite movies EVER, and not just animated movies. A cool 50s setting, giant robots, action--what is not to like? It is also extremely touching in places, moving me to tears every time I see it. Loads of heart, with plenty of humor, fun animation, and special effects. I can't say enough good about this one.

Not sure why everybody seems to get so weepy over this. It's not a sad movie. But it's a damn good one. The animation is very nice, using computers to enhance the 2D drawings. It's a very nice film to look at it, if nothing else. It's also a very enjoyable story, though it's a bit simplistic and one-dimensional, especially the antagonist, who is a buffoonish, evil caricature. Still, these are minor complaints.

Why do people love this? I slowly lost interest as it went & then fast forwarded completely after 53 minutes. Very familiar and predictable E.T. clone that's also highly implausible and internally inconsistent as the giant who is the size of a building vacillates between leaving trailer-sized footprints as each step shakes the very ground he walks on and smashes the trees around him, but somehow avoids detection whenever the script needs him to. The sacrifice is moving, if u can get to it.

Had good intentions but didn't completely follow through. The anti-war message is aimed at kids, so if this was meant to be entirely a kid's film, that'd be fine. But some of the plot points are over kids' heads, so they needed to aim it at one audience or the other.

I am sad I never watched this as a child. However, watching it now, I can honestly say it is one of the best animated features I have seen. It has a lot of heart. Not only this a visually beautiful film but it is also a beautiful film in essence; friendship, understanding and love. Bundle this up with an authentic 50's sci-fi atmosphere and you have a recipe for a great little movie. It might have needed a bit more fleshing out at points but I actually enjoy the simplistic and straight-forward storytelling, it means nothing gets bogged down or over-complicated. And I must admit, despite being painfully obvious, I still shed tears at the Giant's sacrifice.

The Hollywood version of "Tonari no Totoro": more expository ('souls don't die', anyone?), funnier, more action-packed (this one actually has villains), but just as sweet, touching and unassuming. Bird doesn't always shun the schmaltz that most often plagues kids movies, but the characters of the Giant and Hogarth are unforgettable, the animation is vibrant, the humor is gentle and entertaining and the message -peace and acceptance of differentness-, trite as it may seem, deeply resonates.

Although it's good (like, I did want him to live), but at least they should've shown him reuniting with the boy. And the ending that I really wanted (and expected) is where Giant does die, but he miraculously wakes up -- That kind of ending would've been much happy.

This movie is a great example of masterful storytelling. It doesn't matter that it is ultimately a cartoon [that could be for childrens]. What matters is we get to know and spend time with a bunch of characters for long enough that it feels genuinely like we are a part of their lives. Actually, being a cartoon gives this movie a lot more flexibility. I just don't see myself caring the same way if there was a giant puppet gorging himself on junkyard parts.

Genuinely charming and captivating animated film strikes exactly the right balance of gee-whiz naive enthusiasm with a knowingly witty sophistication in its homage/send-up of 50s "red scare" movies. Cast to perfection, with Diesel's touching robot, Marienthal's lovable lead, and especially a hilariously clean-cut McDonald's government agent (while also falling victim to the film's single funniest... herm... running gag) standing out.
