I expected to love this but no dice. The muddled tone and grating humour did not work for me one bit. The dialogue is horrendous, nearly every line is repeated twice with another character saying "what?" in between. Even Michael Caine, who has always been great in every film I've seen him in, turns in an exaggerated, awkward performance that I'm sure is safe to blame on the director. Did the protagonist really need to sleep with 17 women in the first 15 minutes to sell us on him being "cool"?

Watch it for the chase or for its time-capsule status.direction is good, especially where the cars are involved, and it makes excellent use of beautiful Italian mountain roads.Jones gives a solid score to all the action, cycling between mellow (Matt Munro singing “On Days Like These” played during the opening drive is one of the most serene movie prologues) and rowdy appropriately. good humor in it, and even after 50 years I laughed at the “You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors o

Really fun and entertaining bank heist flick -- if you love seeing expensive cars get smashed and ruined and fall off tall picturesque cliffs in Italy, you're gonna love this. Starts of well, keeping the charm and humour steady, all the while looking snappily dressed. The preparation for the heist is exciting and leads us into the very well made getaway sequence (where the humour continues) and ends at the most brilliant point.

Fun movie, a bit campy at times, though strangely some of the plot lines just faded into thin air (like the Mafia, and the geeky professor - what were they in the movie for, really?..)

Top badass moment? The Minis in the sewer pipe, the Minis on the dam, the Minis on the steps, the Minis in the shopping plaza, etc. Celebrating the best bit of British engineering since the Spitfire is badass; if you're a Brit anyway. Sadly the film's let down by its totally unrealistic dialogue, which indicates that England beat Italy at football, away. 3 cats, no chainsaws or decapitations. Enjoy the awesome cats-on-laps action, matched with some expertly written and delivered dialogue.

A tongue in cheek crime caper. A glorious bit of fun. An all time British classic. In short....a masterpiece!

Uneven, at best: Paper thin and forgettable characters pepper a mediocre heist plot marked by either awkwardly blatant exposition (see the crew introductions) or virtually none at all (was the winding escape route part of the plan? Who knows)-yet there is some unique camerawork, and a scrumptiously classy soundtrack improves everything it touches (the tedious silent driving scenes later on only emphasize this). An unexpected and amusing cliffhanger ending (literally) ends things on a good note.

I finally watched the original. I always enjoyed the remake version of this movie, but I was blown away by this 1969 version. Michael Caine does a great job being smart, funny, and endearing. I can finally understand why he was considered a sex symbol during his time. I'm sure there were a ton of famous actors in this movie, but, besides Benny Hill, I can't name a single person. I love car movies. It is one of my favorite "genres" of movie. This movie is a great addition to the car genre

Bond-adjacent style heist featuring iconic stunt driving sequences, undercooked plot/characters, and a breezy Quincy Jones soundtrack. This is why Michael Caine is Austin Powers' dad.

Mediocre until the simply adorable car chase. Caine slutting around in the beginning isn't as charming as it's meant to be, Benny Hill is just disturbing, and come on, what prison was ever that chipper and united? I could have done with a lot more of Camp Freddy, too. The ending came dangerously close to everyone learning an important lesson, and I'm glad it didn't ultimately go there.

It holds up both as a great time capsule for the late 60's spirit and as a fantastic action flick that rivals today's films. The editing, staging, and photography of the heist--especially the car chases--are all a testament to practical filmmaking. The film slightly lacks in a screenplay, however. There's no real villain, even with an attempt at the intro of the movie. And the hero's emotional motivation just isn't there. Still, it--and the funky soundtrack--are recommended.

I mean, Benny Hill as a computer scientist is an amazingly wonderful leap of faith and the driving scenes are ridiculously good, but the ending...is it really an ending?

Wow I really expected better considering the fame of this film. Four fifths of the film is utterly boring. Then there are some nice driving shots during the final getaway, but as with Bullitt (1968) a few nice driving shots don't make up for an hour and fifteen minutes of horribly dull chit-chat. The ending is terrible. Didn't think I'd say this but the remake is actually better. Worst performance I've seen from Caine; his accent is particularly annoying in this film for some reason.

One of the more odd films I've ever seen. It's either nonsensical, full of weird humor, or boring until the actual heist and chase scene which were cool (except for some really weird music playing in the background). I know it's blasphemous to say but I really enjoyed the remake much more.

My comprehensive analysis of the first 15 minutes of the movie is as follows: Car. Crash. Explosion. Suave guy. Hot Girl. Car. Tailored suits. Expensive car. Hot Girls. Bikinis. Italian Job = Good time. The British Robin-Hood-Style Nationalism is so shoehorned it's hilarious.

Add some points if old cars ring your bell, I guess. Or not, because that might actually transform a sub-par caper movie into a bona fide horror film (a lot of said old cars are destroyed).

Car stunts and chases is the reason why this film can be considered a classic. Narrative is a total mess. It seems to me that everyone making this film had too much fun themselves, not caring about the viewers. The ending is probably the most abrupt and untimely ever.

How exactly does the prison in this movie work and how did they end up on the roof of multiple buildings that aren't anywhere near each other? The first half of the film is extremely boring. I stayed with it hoping the actual heist would make it worth it, but it was really disappointing.

Michael Caine is very good in this film. Caine is the main reason to watch as most of the supporting cast are not given much to do. There are some fun car chases and the movie definitely has a 60's look.

I feel rather let down by "The Italian Job". I was expecting Caine to a deliver a suave performance, but he barely got a chance. I was expecting a clever plot and a quick, concise screenplay. I got a mostly boring film that dragged a bit. I was expecting an excellent, rip-roaring British Mod score. I got something akin to the Benny Hill theme. It's not a particularly bad film, it just lets itself down so often. The cinematography is stunning, however, and is the sole reason I would recommend it.

A charming, somewhat silly crime caper worth a watch mainly for the creativity of the choreographed car chases, and for the way it preserves the spirit of 60s Britain. On the flip side, unfortunately, the strain of British nationalism (arguably, xenophobia) running thoughout is a bit unsettling.

At times a little slow and tedious but still a much more entertaining 90 minutes than the remakes. Then again a colostomy would probably be more entertaining than the remake. Correction, definately more entertaining.

An utter delight - very much in keeping with 1969's mores and standards, with a sometimes "cheeky" sense of humour that may not age well, depending on your mind-set, but still great fun; if the caper film has been done to death, the particulars make this film fresh and interesting, especially Jones' wonderful score and a thrilling (and hilarious) "shaggy dog" finale. Caine gives one of his most charismatic 60s performances, and Coward's preening monarchist is alone worth the price of admission!

Strange, kinky 60's heist flick. This is how Argo should have been made replacing the fraudulent tension with camp kook. Eccentric British (American) nationalism with a sped up, send up of Italians (Iranians). The finale, the plane goes into a nose dive right as the Iranian border is in sight, John Goodman phones the cockpit somehow 'Alright lads, I've got an idea'. End.

Great fun until you get to the ending, which has to be one of the worst ever. If it were a book you'd throw it across the room screaming, "I sat through all that -- for THAT??!!" Still, Freder would rather watch this fifteen times than ever watch the remake even once.

Heretical opinion: The remake of this film is better. I just don't like this film. It doesn't really work as a heist film, for understandable reasons ... it's a comedy, and the details of the heist are deliberately given short shrift in favour of the comedy. I don't think it's funny. Yes, I guess the concluding chase is exciting in theory, but if you never engage with the rest of the film, the excitement remains theortetical. Everything I dislike about Guy Ritchie seems to originate here.

So Boring! The camera paid too much attention to Caine and his plan being concocted. The problem with that is you follow a scheme from conception to the development of every single detail, and leave no room for surprise. With zero character development, pointless scenes, and a so-called brilliant plan that a twelve year old could have come up with, it was only the stylish humor and chase scene that made The Italian Job bearable.

I enjoy the Quincy Jones-scored getaway sequence for the sheer spectacle of it, but what I'm more interested in is the heist itself, of which the film chronicles the stylish preparation. The plan is ingenious. The scene itself has a scrappy straightforwardness to it, but it goes so fast, hurrying to cut to the chase.
