Keeping up with the Joneses (Demi Moore, David Duchovny, Amber Heard and Ben Hollingsworth) is next to impossible, considering they're a family with good looks, fancy cars, a sprawling estate -- and a shocking secret the neighbors would never guess. Gary Cole, Glenne Headly and Lauren Hutton co-star in this smart drama about the dark side of a material world from writer-director Derrick Borte.

Great premise, okay execution. Would have benefited from tapping into a darker vein. Imagine this being filtered through the brain of Solondz? Solid performances can't hide the fact that the vain consumerism that the couple next door - and society - are caught in is the most interesting point. The theme of the capitalist system feeding on itself and spitting out corpses left and right (i bet you can't tell my political persuasion!) is not explored through a glass (sufficiently) darkly.

Enjoyable satire with a great - and original - premise. Duchovny, Moore and Cole are all very good and the only thing holding the movie back is that it isn't quite dark or edgy enough.

It lacks the satirical bite to achieve greatness, but I found the central concept clever enough that I'd recommend it.

An intriguing premise, a solid cast, but there are no repercussions for anything that happens. Daughter almost breaks up a marriage; nothing comes of it. Son almost kills a girl; nothing comes of it. Husband inadvertently causes a dude to kill himself; nothing comes of it. There's a pretty good idea for a movie here, but that's all there is. The execution, when it isn't lacking altogether, simply doesn't make any sense, and the tacked-on happy ending rings false in just about every way.

Duchovny finally hits his big screen stride as a sophisticated charmer in a movie about product placement where the subject matter probably financed the film.

It doesn't pursue its subversive premise as far as it should, but The Joneses benefits from its timely satire of consumer culture -- as well as a pair of strong performances from David Duchovny and Demi Moore.

Strange, flat hybrid of rom-com, satire and social commentary which fires off in multiple directions but can't seem to find its footing or focus (odd, seemingly irrelevant tragic elements introduced at the deneumont are especially baffling). Hard to know what the point is, despite an intriguing premise; that the film remains at least consistently watchable is testament to the excellent performances (Moore in particular has never been better as the hardened pragmatist).

It's actually a fantastic concept, but they had difficulty meshing the tones of absurdity, comedy, romance, and dark drama that they tried to establish, which makes it fall apart somewhat during the conclusion.

Manages to hold interest though a fairly poor ending. Could of changed a few things narrative wise.

Loved David Duchovny in this role. Demi Moore is not as hot as she once was. Amber Heard is super hot. Glenne Headly was also great. The story is pretty far fetched and contrived, but nevertheless somewhat clever and entertaining. Gary Cole did not stink as bad as usual. The music was good, and the pacing was good too. I was engaged even though the story was a little out there and the ending was a bit pathetic.

Interesting film, and decent enough to be enjoyed. I found the film was not thrilling to watch, but it did get me thinking about the logic behind our behaviour around the things we own. Its a nice insight into some modern day dillemas.

Very interesting idea. If they had held back a bit on the cheesy parts this could have been a great film! But even with the ending it's still very enjoyable.

This cautionary tale might be easier to swallow if all that stuff didn't look like it came from a Sky Mall catalog.

Good film. Original premise, well written, well acted. Should have been darker though. I would have liked to see in greater detail the lengths different neighbors would go to, just to keep up. Also, the insidious and subversive nature of materialism in our society was not explored nearly enough.

Cool premise, with the delicious irony that there is heavy product placement going on here: "Hey, we're sophisticated enough to satirize our own marketing!" Moore's casting is inspired. But the happy ending glosses over the implications of rampant consumerism, and I kept wishing Neil LaBute was at the helm. Also, I got a giggle from the use of Stella "Wifebeater" Artois as the aspirational beer of choice.

For what the film is, I thought it was enjoyable. There is a strong underlying tone which I felt was good. I would have preferred the ending to be slightly different though. My only main complaint was that none of the camera angles were stable, which was annoying. Oh, and Amber Heard - could anyone be more attractive?

The Joneses needed a tighter focus, or perhaps it just needed to avoid degenerating into a clichéd and uninteresting film. It starts off great, and continues on that path until midway through, but then it declines quickly, like a roller coaster once it reaches its peak. It's easily watchable thanks to the actors, but if you're hoping to take away anything from the film -- it does want to be a satire, at times, anyway -- you'll be disappointed.

Thats really a unexpected good movie. Great questioning on new post-modernist and capitalist family bonds and relationships.. Also fine criticsim on advertisement. Ending is poor and cliche but it has to be poor and simple cuz .... Movie starts with big fake promising life and gifts.. But ın the end just dark night, leaving car and lovers simple and honest. Amber Heard's character is the only flaw cuz that character didnt show any character arc or development otherwise good cast and screenpla

Any potential provided by the concept quickly disappears in this poorly-written, chemistry-devoid effort that runs a few bland sub-plots before petering out into nothing. Duchovny does his best to carry the film, and Cole and Headly perform well in their roles as the neighbours, but at no point do you care about the fate of any of the characters. Bizarrely, there doesn't even seem to be a climax to the main story, it all coming across like an idea brainstorm rather than a finished movie.

Bland predictable movie about the pitfalls of lifestyle consumerism is actually reasonably engaging in parts if you look for it and do some (maybe alot) of the work yourself. All wrapped up in a bow at the end. Watch out for how nicely the layers and layers of product placement are woven in (too busy looking at the fake ones to spot all the real ones).

I didn't hate this but it could have been a lot better. It did do a good job showing the neurosis of anyone in sales and how people are treated as walking dollar signs when it comes to marketing. Reminds of why I no longer work in sales... you truly must be a soulless capitalist. Oh god... retail flashbacks ahhhhhhhhh.

Classic case of a filmmaker trying to do too much only to wind up with not enough. Premise is something a director with more bite or focus could have some wicked fun with (guerrilla marketing family "units" infiltrate ritzy communities to peddle high-end shit to their neighbors) but Borte gets sidetracked by some limp side dramas that don't amount to much. Chemistry b/w Moore and Duchovny (what's with the random "gangsta" one-liners?) is non-existent but meant to be the movie's heart. Puzzling.

At the end Steve Jones tried to show human side of marketing, but all he achieved was weakness. He is the blankest character in that extraordinary family, where all modern cliches emerged. Nevertheless, the idea is appreciated among us, slightly paranoid kin.
