Genuine activist cinema that aims to produce a real systemic critique, tying together many complex issues including nuclear weapons, media techniques, inequality, racism, colonialism, and also trying to make the series a vehicle for producing change both in the participants and in the audience. But despite its admirable multi-dimensionality, the constant focus on speaking to various families around the world and extricating their views is itself a bit manipulative, and exceedingly repetitive.

Watkins’ ability to punctuate documentary with docudrama to realise maximum impact as participatory film is likely unparalleled in cinema. Yes, the threat of nuclear war has been superseded by other apocalyptic threats and the nature of media production and consumption has changed markedly since the 1980s, but the messages of this film are more relevant now than ever. To watch this film is to dedicate the time and energy required to start to fundamentally change one’s engagement with media.
