Realy long but fulfil movie. I just loved it. Acting is fantastic, simple, realistic and warm cinematographt was more than fine. Screenplay and Script are the best part imo. That "Is he my girl" part was unnecessary and the most dragged thing about movie. But besides this it was almost perfect.

A good movie, although a tiny bit vague and cheesy during some parts, most notably its finale (which was exciting but didn't leave me with a clear and thought-provoking moral question, and was not really related to the father and son story that had been told throughout the movie) and at its epilogue. It is worth watching for Kaminski's cinematography at least, which is, as always, exceptional. And the acting is solid throughout.

A would-be prestige film that relies too heavily on Downey and Duvall working with a cliche-ridden and often melodramatic script. They can do this kind of thing in their sleep and for a film where their performances are the key selling point, the material doesn't push them far out of their comfort zones.

Plays every cliche in the book completely straight, and I loved it. Stacked cast on fantastic form, an old-fashioned meaty story with plenty of melodrama to exploit, beautiful cinematography.. it'd be easy to criticise the by-the-numbers screenplay, but I was so utterly engrossed that I can't really bring myself to criticise it.

Feels familiar but Downey Jr. and Duvall are both solid as well as a talented supporting cast. It is a bit overlong, especially for not really showing us any of the issues that caused the riff with father and son.

There's some really great performances from Downey Jr. and Duvall. Downey pretty much plays himself and it totally works. I would argue that there were a few too many sub plots which were overall unimportant and watered down the film. There is no shortage of great drama and the climax in the courtroom will keep you glued to the screen. At times the movie was fairly touching. Overall, I was pleased with The Judge and I think you should give it a go. 4 STARS

It seems hard to judge a judge, but I'll hop onto the witness stand and swear under oath about how I feel about this movie. The Judge has its high and low points. I felt like this was some incredible acting from both Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Jr. Then there were some scenes and plot-lines thrown in that muddied the waters of this films plot...

This movie is horrible. Just begging to be oscar nominated cancer-dad sob story. Movie pulls all the right levers, so clumsily. When you listen closely to the dialogs you come to realise how bad it is, sometimes like a Hallmark moments parody. Downey Jr. pushing the limit here, and yet no nomination, must be disappointing. Like DiCaprio he's one of those boring limited movie stars.

Quick-paced legal thrills here are enhanced by captivating family drama and broken up by surprisingly goofy bits of comedy. It's a bit jarring, but ultimately feels refreshing; each mood is well-crafted and together create a uniquely holistic and relatable feel for the film. The multiple corresponding plot threads do make the story a bit unfocused, but the central father-son character(s) study is excellent, thanks to fantastic performances from Duvall and Downey. A thoroughly engaging film.

Great cast and a good idea... the pacing is far too slow and somewhat uneven... they should have cut at least 30 minutes and 3 plots. The only way I could get through it was with frequent fast forwarding, but I think there was a good 1.5 hour movie hiding here.

RDJ is a very limited actor, but this douche defense lawyer is a role born for him. Duvall is casted well and delivers fine. I wish they focused more on the crime and the mystery around it. It's good, but it could have been great.

This is another film where it feels like it's all been done before. It's not a bad film, by any means, but it is full of clichés, and melodrama. Its main strengths are probably its performances; particularly Robert Duvall, and the always likable Robert Downey Jr.. It does have some sweet moments, but it's too long and too unoriginal to be anything extraordinary.

Got plenty of problems with the film - pace was all over the place, issues with how it was written, many scenes were shot in a peculiar way. It connects on an emotional level at various points, however, thus the positive score. Acting is good too.

Robert Duvall gives an outstanding performance, and others also perform well, but the story is underwhelming. The film making was excellent and the music was good. Vera Farmiga was great. Downey was satisfying. It reveals the integrity and honesty of a long time judge suffering from declining health who becomes an unlikely vigilante. The personal relationships and interactions were well written, but the story does not have enough emotional impact, lacks action, and leaves you wanting more.

The likeability of Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall should be enough to make you want to watch this and you wont be let down by the performances. Im sure if the story was better executed we would be looking at award contenders for the leading men. The story focuses on the relationships alot and isnt really a courtroom drama as the title might suggest. The story is a little bit drawn out and I think the film could be condensed to 90 mins. The cinematography deserves alot of praise.Worth a watch.

It is typically typecast. Robert Downey Jr as the douche bag lawyer, Duvall as the good old straight judge. If they went a little bit deeper in the dark areas of the father-son relationship (and the brothers'), in stead of these comedic forays, it could have been a much better movie.

The only real gripe here is the writing. While the movie boasts some great acting and a great cast, the plot is cliched and the dialogue became really shoddy. The direction was alright, but some choices, I could have gone without. For what was meant to be a prestige film, this is pretty average.

In that sense, this pic delivers encouraging messages of familial forgiveness. It becomes a satisfying if overly long-feeling saga of a father and son finding the bond they never knew through the pains of life they'd have rather avoided. Of course, it's those realistically depicted pains--played out in coarse verbal interactions, harsh accusations and wince-worthy visuals--that give this pic its R rating and make it, if you're asking for my verdict, difficult to cozy up to with a popcorn and soda.

Duvall is the MVP here and honestly should get an Oscar nomination. The movie overall is a little forced, a little too obvious in its dramatic ploys. I like RDJ a lot, and he does this well, but that's only because this is entirely within his wheelhouse. Cocky, fiery wit, borderline unlikeable, oozing charm. If he's going to impress me, he needs to start branching out to roles that actually challenge him. There's good stuff in this film. I didn't dislike it. It's just surrounded by weaker stuff.

It may be cliched (won't argue that it isn't), emotionally manipulative (though I'd argue that most art probably is to some degree), and on the melodramatic side. Hell, the family's inter-relationships (which are the driving force behind much of the movie) could probably be described as downright petty at some points. But goddamn if this movie didn't suck me in. RDJ manages to play himself, basically, but in a much more refined, engrossing manner, setting this far above his recent performances.

It's shot really well, with picturesque cinematography, with great performances from the two leads... but god damn is that script ever sloppy. Talk about throwing every single cliche at you that they possibly can. Estranged family, big shot lawyer returning to his old roots (that he hates), seeing his childhood sweetie, incest?, riding his bike to feel FREE MAN, etc... it's just too much. I still enjoyed the movie, but that was despite how much it tried to make me cry (does work sometimes).

It's clear this was meant to be a prestige picture. The length (141 minutes), the cast, the subject matter, the stabs at old-fashioned melodrama...this clearly wanted to be something. But it's not much of anything. Thuddingly predictable, hackneyed, cluttered, with good moments lost amidst cliches and a few utterly misguided elements. Robert Downey Jr. (as the slick lawyer) and Robert Duvall (as his firmly ethical judge father) are reliably solid, but the writing and directing let them down.
Rated 10 Oct 2014

The Judge is not a bad movie. It's not worth sitting through, and feels more like a mixtape of earlier, better movies, but it's not bad. It's not terribly entertaining, and once you get past the initial awe of seeing Robert Downey, Jr. and Robert Duvall clashing, there isn't much to see -- and it runs for 140 minutes. It lacks depth and purpose. That's the main problem. It wants to base everything on the father-son relationship, and it's not interesting enough to justify the running time.
