This is The VVitch's older aunt who lives out in the country whose eccentricity puts you ill at ease but never quite crosses the line. The cinematography is painfully plain--at times it feels neglectful of Iceland's natural beauty, but more often it conjures a kind of hyperrealism that really gets you into a Dark-Ages state-of-mind. The narrative itself is a kind of random walk through ordinary humanity eschewing flair and drama in favor of a fairy tale authenticity. A strange subdued film.

Only faint echoes of the Grimm tale are present, as though Keene is not just giving us "her version" but simulating a century-plus of variation that was quashed when the story was put to paper, published, sold. Heavy and a little gruesome, understated and dry, not for everyone.

Aspires to Bergman. Sort of half hits that mark. The visuals and the tone are there, and the bones of the story are good, but the dialogue is simple beyond utilitarian, as if written by someone with a grade-school literacy level. Consequently the film is significantly more effective when nobody is talking, and it allows itself to linger and savor the folkloric low fantasy atmosphere.
