"It's not karate!" So the 12-year-old protagonist was deliberately written to know the difference between Kung Fu/China and Karate/Japan, but the filmmakers and marketers don't? I'd like to think we're smart enough to recognize that a movie properly titled "The Kung Fu Kid" is a continuation of a similarly titled film series from the 80's with a new spin on it. That major annoyance aside, it's a pretty enjoyable underdog story, with an emotional turn by Jaden Smith.

Oh how I wanted desperately to hate this film. But you just can't. Aside from the fact that it has little/nothing to do with its predecessor and should be called The Kung Fu Kid, this is an overwhelmingly likable film. It runs a bit long and several music video-ish sequences seem to drag on forever, but Smith (who I wanted to hate more than anything) carries the film well, and Chan gives the best performance of his career. He's very affecting and can still kick ass, too. Surprisingly solid film.

Shock of shocks, this is not the travesty that I expected it to be. Dare I say this out loud? I kinda liked it. Will Smith's kid doesn't come close to matching the plucky geekiness of Macchio's LaRusso but I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't make him a cocky asshole like I expected. He definitely has more of a swagger than Daniel-San, but he never veers into unlikable territory. The modern updates and relocation to China all work pretty well. Unnecessary, but adequate entertainment.

Where have u gone Dan Larusso? Our nation turns its boorish eyes 2 u. Speaking as an old fart lover of the original I can say there's nothing 2 complain about here. An extremely faithful remake, even in tone, the film avoids pandering 2 modern MTV puerile crassness & Jaden Smith displays none of his father's tiresome cockiness. Instead, like the film, Smith's Dre is sweet & respectful. Although I started 2 get bored it was b/c I'd seen it all b4, but the kids in my audience seemed 2 be loving it

Contrary to popular belief, this movie is not ALL about Jaden. Jaden's love interest has quite possibly the largest head in the history of cinema. Jaden's rival is quite possibly the most evil-looking kid on the Eurasian supercontinent. Jaden's braids have quite possibly more twists than do exist in every Hitchcock movie ever made. Not that you'd be watching this for the dialogue, but flipping the subtitles on might quite possibly be the smartest thing you do before pressing play.

Supremely silly, this film tries a bit too hard to be dramatic and falls into several cliches of the "Karate Kid rip-off" genre. Still, the action is pretty cool and the acting is (mostly) solid. The score shifted from awesome to bland, but mostly stuck with the former. My only real problem with this movie is its title. They stress in the film that it's kung-fu, not karate, and the story and characters have nothing to do with the Karate Kid series. The title comes across as more of a lampshade.

This movie is a lot like its film score: some of it's classic, some's new. And even though some modern parts seem a little off, there's some original stuff that's surprisingly good. This remake's just as good as the old version, which is mostly thanks to Jackie Chan's great performance and the fact that the original was a bit corny too.

A total surprise. You know Jackie's still got it but not to this degree. Action stars age into dignity. Jaden has no talent for acting at all but it works here, as a hyper kid being frustrated that he isn't learning something fast enough.

I don't know...I'm fine with kungfu as karate replacement and panaromic China exploitation, but kid really being a kid ruined it for me. One thing that makes original work was Macchio's expression, now it's replaced by ever about the cry looking Smith jr.

Surpasses the original in my opinion by taking the formula of the original and modernizing with Chan's performance surpassing Morita's in my opinion. The cinematography being set in China was also visually more appealing than the original. My only complaint really is the name. "Karate" is a Japanese martial art and was not used or mentioned in the film except by his mom in one conversation where he corrects her.

Obnoxious turn by Henson and a rather indulgent running time notwithstanding, your final judgment on the film will depend largely on your susceptibility to Smith's charisma. Anyone can acquire fighting skills but I thought he pulled off the part as a whole just fine as well. The film's real surprise (and, for those of us who've seen the original, there are few) is that Jackie Chan might just have a future ahead of him as a character actor: his English has improved and the man can act! Passable.

The movie was unnecessary. I mean, it's a remake of a really iconic film. If they'd changed everything, people would have been upset. They kept virtually all the same plot points, elements, even a lot of the more memorable dialogue, and it didn't really feel good. Now, having said all of that, it's still an aesthetically pleasing film, with cool fight scenes, beautiful scenaries, and the interesting spin of putting the American kid in China. Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith were equally impressive.

Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita make the original film(s). Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan don't have the same chemistry. There are other problems that may seem minor: the updated version for "wax on-wax off;" the time spent on the love interest and the length of the film overall. Still, I guess it wasn't entirely terrible, but not a good film, either.

Very unnecessary remake. I feel it gets criticized too harshly though. Jaden is actually decent, the fight choreographies and characters are better than in the original, it's more respectful of south east asian culture, it certainly surpasses all three sequels in terms of quality, and the pele kick is far cooler than the crane kick. For a coming of age story, it's good enough, but I'm not the target audience and I don't see the need for the remake. Okay movie.

Was this a brilliant film? No. Was it a good remake? Yeah, I think it was. A good remake will take the original concept of a film and add something new, something different, just something so it's not just a complete rehash of a perfectly good movie that already exists. Some of the writing was a bit sloppy but yeah, it wasn't a bad film. Oh, and as awesome as Jackie Chan is, he has nothing on Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi.

This movie tries to pull on those nostalgic heartstrings a little too much. The title alone is a total lie, but I suppose for most of this films audience Karate and Kung Fu are interchangeable terms. The scenes in this movie follow the events of the original too closely. The acting in this movie was pretty sub-par. This is like remaking Terminator and replacing the titular character with Predator. Wtf. It being about hocus pocus kung fu automatically makes it more implausible than the original, but worse yet is the age of the characters. Maybe don't copy the love story if the cast comprises pre-teens. The mother is criminally negligent and the villains aren't believable, but Chan and Smith are pretty good. Using "Higher Ground" for the climax is unforgivably lazy and out of place. +1 for Lei Wulong's ult.

How did I forget to rank this piece of shit before? Holy balls is this dumb. Not only is it boring but it also had a scene that must have been directed by a pedophile. Seriously, a 12 year old girl dances to a dying cat sing some song about playing poker and the game then pronounces her "HOT". About on par with the original. Some of the updates are good, taking away some of the 80s cheese, but a lot of it is replaced by 2010 cheese so in a few years they'll both be equally silly, but in different ways. It's fine and watchable, though I can't believe it's over two hours long.

No improvements on the original, but not as bad as it could have been. Initially had severe doubts due to the inappropriate title, the replacement of the iconic Miyagi with a "serious" Jackie and the "disneyfication" of Daniel-san. I was pleasantly surprised because Smith is charmingly believable, Jackie impressed me with some dramatic depth and the positive message was delivered well. Still overly long and cheesy compared to its predecessor and omits the original underlying class tensions.

Very unexpected. I actually enjoyed this. I do agree with most people that the title of this should be the Kung Fu Kid... since no Karate was done in this film... but hey, I guess everything does better with name recognition. Still, don't let the name bother you, because this movie is just as fun as the originals with good old Ralphie. Jaden Smith did an excellent job and I couldn't believe how well he did some of the moves and Jackie Chan was a great mentor. The ending is the best for sure.

Completely unnecessary and yet better-than-expected, this remake of the 1984 classic mixes Parts I and II and takes the action to China. Zwart's movie looks positively great, the martial arts are bigger and better, and Jaden Smith mirrors the chops of his pop. However, I think the kids in the movie are too young for the increased violence on display. This is a tougher film compared to the original, and parents should beware. But overall, if overlong, the movie is still a worthy remake.

Swapping an awkward teen lead for a cocky tween (the talented young Smith) seemed stupid but allows for some nice touristy china shots. Chan is his usual charming self but the story still relies on underdog clichés and adds some more; pushy Chinese parents, wittering on about family honour. The fights were entertainingly rough but it's too long, cutting the unnecessary 'love interest' would've helped.

While unnecessary, The Karate Kid remake improves on some of the flaws of the original while introducing a few of its own. Smith, who is more Jada than Will, is decent especially as the role requires a precocious attitude, and honestly he's a little less grating than Macchio. Chan is great, thought not as memorable as Morita in the mentor role. Thus a similar dynamic exists between the characters and audience. The locations and score were good, though the tournament is oddly anti-climactic.

I walked into 'The Karate Kid' with some pretty low expectations. Yet, this movie manages to be worse than I ever could have expected. Sixty minutes of content is stretched into two-and-a-half painful hours with extremely long establishing shots, awkward meet-cute and kissing scenes between pre-teens and Dre dancing or bitching that China isn't Detroit. Just another corny kid's movie. The kid's all overact because they are really young. Smith has his troubles, but you can see some glimmers that he has some talent (a lot of the problem is the script is rather 'blah' and doesn't give him much). Zwart shows just how far you can get by classic, clear-cut storytelling. Apart from the film being a tad long, The Karate Kid is a functioning remake of the 80's classic that manages to take a fresh point of view by going to China instead. Of course the country is portrayed through the eyes of a tourist (we see a magical pictoresque land of wonders) but a little escapism is sometimes just what we need. And that Jaden can really carry a film on his own!
