Archer Coe has been found dead in his locked bedroom. The cops consider it suicide, but Philo believes otherwise. Percolates along agreeably, thanks to an excellent ensemble cast, headed up by the suave William Powell, sure directing, and good, solid writing. It's not the kind of mystery that will have you on the edge of your seat, but there is hardly a dull moment the entire time.

This is so much morbid fun, from Dr Doremus' quips at Detective Heath to Vance's almost divine skills of abductive reasoning to the super fast yet smooth transitions between some of the scenes. So much goes on in just 73 minutes, but nothing is rushed (take note modern filmmakers). The most confusing part of the film for me was that all the dudes with moustaches looked the same!

The cinematography and the editing are very good, those transitions were so nice; finally some regular quality sound! Who would have guessed that the last entry for this saga was going to be the best, by far?

A classic "Who done it?" murder case with William Powell as Philo Vance for the last time. Powell did 3 movies portraying the detective in 1929-30. Those cases was also entertaining, but suffered a lot from being early sound movies before they'd mastered the new media. This one however is professionally made and looks slick and is Powell's best in the series with enough twists and plots to never feel bored. I enjoyed thoroughly.
