The most important family in Hickoryville is (naturally enough) the Hickorys, with sheriff Jim and his tough manly sons Leo and Olin. The timid youngest son, Harold, doesn't have the muscles to match up to them, so he has to use his wits to win the respect of his strong father and also the love of beautiful Mary. (imdb)

Consistently funny with a good mix of slapstick and situational comedy and some likable characters. It's missing a trademark scene to make it memorable but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable in the moment.

Lloyd's simplicity was a double edged sword: his underdog narratives could be genuinely thrilling, but they were also predictable, tending towards conventional crowd pleasing heroics. This was his stock in trade, and it served him well, yet one can't help but wonder if he undersold his talent by invariably playing it safe. Nonetheless, he was in fine form in T.K.B, delivering high quality slapstick that's expertly staged, and the Black Ghost sequence with the monkey is top shelf Lloyd.

It's fine storytelling shot through an engaging camera that ultimately and mainly ends up being a treatise on the cinematic power of monkeys.

Lloyd's always going to be compared with Chaplin and Keaton and unfortunately this film's not as heartwarming as Chaplin or has as much physical gags as Keaton. It's a fairly predictable story that is shot well. Fav scene: his laundry contraption.

Lloyd is very charming and photogenic and it's almost impossible not to root for his underdog character. This sort of physical comedy is what works best in Silent film, and even though all the slapstick can get a little tiring after and hour and a half, it's still enjoyable. A very accessible introduction to silent film, for those wishing to learn more about the genre.

Better than most Buster Keaton movies.

Lloyd had previously left me with a bad impression, unfortunately all I had seen were a couple of his talkies. If you're looking for something to hold up to Keaton and Chaplin this doesn't quite do it, but it does have merit and it is a fine movie.

Probably the most consistent Lloyd picture I've seen. Lacks a real iconic scene that this kind of stuff needs.

Lloyd's reign as the dependable popular draw in physical comedy was still in full swing at this point, and his usual formula is in full effect despite the period setting. It's at its best in the gag heavy opening and the long action-comedy confrontation at the end—with additional monkey action. (For once, the centerpiece is not a chase scene.)

An homage to a film called "Tol'able David" (1921) and a re-make of "The White Sheep" (1924). "The Kid Brother" is a classic silent comedy with a series of clever gags, physical stunts and an absurd monkey. An action packed Western, adventure with elements of horror and noir. Harold Lloyd's combination of slapstick, romance and sentiment is simple, heart felt and hilarious silent comedy. The gags, laughs and thrills never stop. One of Lloyd's best, successful and most popular films.

Lloyd breaks away from "character" moments and goes all-out in slapstick gags here. He also seems to break the "underdog" character with a berserker rage in one of the final sequences. Whereas Keaton had the better stunts, it always felt like he wrote a story around the stunts; Lloyd seems to have written the story first and peppered it with gags, which certainly helps the narrative flow better, even when you know he's going to get the girl in the end.

An enjoyable entertainment, The Kid Brother uses an expertly placed camera and flawless staging of scenes to create a fast-paced, inventive, and satisfying film. Lloyd's antics feel fresh throughout as he makes ample use of the variety of objects, animals, and people around him. Not as heartfelt or transcendent as Chaplin, nor as sublime as the always underplaying Keaton, Lloyd offers contemporary viewers a perfectly accessible avenue into the world of silent comedies.
