how can you hold that tone right throughout a film? just when I was thinking "it did turn into giving the most deplorable feel-good movie vibes," the final shot managed to prove me wrong.

Builds the moods and characters very well. It's almost as if the author never wanted the investigation to end.

I personally find black comedy to be the most challenging genre to master in terms of juggling its various 'incompatible' tones, but this one succeeds in virtually every regard, right up to its wonderfully dark & anguished howl of a final shot. Really loved Adam Brody and his chemistry with Sophie Nélisse, who is a lil' gem. Also very very cool to see a film shot in Canada that doesn't get a makeover as an American city, but instead retains its Canadian geography within the narrative.

A well written script and a few good performances make this a little gem of a movie that most people will never hear of because sony is usually trash.

Listen, I am a huge Adam Brody stan. It is difficult for me to parse out my feelings for his character, Seth, from the O.C. (even though, on a recent re-watch, he is not a particularly likeable character. Damn that Adam Brody charm!), and his other acting roles. This film sucks you in with a light, comedic tone, but there is an ever-present darkness that just continues to build. It does not stray too far from its noir roots.

If it knows what it wants to be, it doesn’t succeed in portraying it, but I suspect it just aimed with a shotgun. A few shards strike the outside of the target, enough to earn an occasional chortle at a dry joke or absurdist nod, but the film is largely a miss and doesn’t anywhere near earn its devastating finale (which you can’t really call a twist, since the tie-in is obvious). And PS, no r**ist earns a final speech, even in a movie.

Pretty great dark comedy. I have not seen what could very well be the most tired trope of current cinema, the depressed 30 something oaf, done so well in quite some time. The mystery was way deeper than I was expecting.

Probably pitched as Brick meets Mystery Team, except I don't know how likely you are to secure funding with those antecedents. Maybe they shot high and said it was Chinatown meets the Big Lebowski. Balances a wide range of tones remarkably well. The mystery at the core is more complex than I thought going into this and it certainly isn't afraid to get dark. A neat surprise.

What a feature debut! A "coming-of-age-noir" that's clever, subtle and funny in how it mashes up its genres. Dear evan morgan, if they approach you with star wars: JUST. SAY. NO.

The Kid Detective'i yılın sürprizlerinden biri olarak nitelendirsem, en doğru tanım olur. Son derece depresif, tahmin ettiğimden daha dramatik. Mizah anlayışı da çok sağlam. Yaratılan gizemin parçaları ve çözüm noktası şaşırtıcı derecede iyi. Modern bir noir kalitesine sahip.

The Kid Detective is an compelling dark comedy that examines arrested development in a surprising way. At times the onscreen events are outrageously funny, and moments later downright depressing. Morgan's screenplay and direction seem to do this purposefully to almost mirror Abe's (Brody) headspace. The jarring tone shift at the climax of the film might have been a step too far, but serves to underscore the theme rather than for entertainment. Brody's performance is what makes the film work.
