Another bad, nasty film from Aldrich adrift.

A bold, gripping and sometimes hilarious black comedy about jealousy, narcissism and despair. Excellent work by York and Browne and an absolute tour-de-force by Beryl Reid - intense, tragic and funny, often in the same scene, it's surely one of the great film performances of the sixties.

Top badass moment? A film so far ahead of its time that it features lesbians before they even existed. Worth watching to see the brilliant Beryl Reid in full-on, bitch-from-Hell mode; and Susannah York just being, eh, there. Surprisingly undated, it's best enjoyed with a bottle of gin. I’m off to Amazon now to buy an Applehurst box set, the sort of top-draw drama that BBC can only dream of making nowadays, thanks to the freezing of the licence fee. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
