These movies always boil down to some "dame" that ruins everything. This sort of mentality makes these things almost sci-fi in their nature because it's not a reality that I've ever been in. I mean I've never had a problem with my mothe...sist...wife...uhhhhhhh.

Light on the Kubrick touch, but a very watchable little film noir. Not a perfect movie, but a really good one. Kubrick's eye as a still photographer definitely works to his advantage here, some of the lighting setups and compositions are fantastic. Also the fractured narrature structure is interesting, and bonus points for one hell of an evil femme fatale and just a hint of homosexual subtext.

The first half seems to be a decent but typical film noir, with archetypal characters and overly expository narration. Yet so much of what follows -- the handling of the nonlinear storyline is just one example -- while not quite new, seems not merely ahead of its time, but better-executed than most contemporary films that attempt the same thing. Comparisons with Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, etc. are unavoidable. And the "money shot" is unfailingly powerful, even when you know it's coming.

Kubrick's substantial pedigree begins here. Lean, mean, cold-blooded, and meticulously chiseled, The Killing is an early model of this filmmaker's proclivity to man-in-the-machine stories; a heist thriller about an ambitious master plan threatened by the motivations of its autonomous parts. The patchwork chronology informs a precarious and ill-fated trap, recalling the condemned schematics of Lang's best films. It is vicious and sharp-toothed, not least of all in its biting irony.

Sterling Hayden leads a great cast in a race track heist. The heist was extremely clever and eloquent. The entire film goes through a play by play of the going ons of the heist and the events leading up to it. This film is way ahead of its time. It is violent, and extremely well acted. Kubrick did a fantastic job of characterization in this film. The characters are all memorable, and the atmosphere created was one of great suspense. Kubrick's first masterpiece.

Sterling Hayden provides a great performance as Johnny Clay, and Kubrick's cinematography is well done for the era. Real memorable heist scene, but I'm still not sure if I really enjoyed the ending. Either way, The Killing is a must for any fan of noir or Kubrick.

This early Kubrick heist film is remarkable for two things: 1) downbeat performances that strike the perfect note between the pathetic and the sympathetic in creating these doomed denizens of the half-world (Hayden, Cook and Windsor being standouts) and 2) the innovative fragmentation of time in the screenplay that makes the presentation of the robbery itself so cinematically artful, the details so easy to follow and the final effect so suspenseful and absorbing.

Kubrick showed a talent for taking certain genres (war, sci-fi, horror) & bringing new elements to them. In The Killing he does that for noir--building on the familiar parts of duplicitous women, and criminal violence as a resolution. However, his terse dialogue, docudrama style photography, nonlinear storytelling, and fantastic lead (Hayden) elevate things. My one complaint is that the flashbacks try to be too cute--bordering on unnecessary at times. Recommended for fans of film & the director.

A very well-crafted noir that relies on an airtight structure and story to carry tension throughout, as well as Sterling Hayden's dominant presence. It's a lot looser and fast-paced than just about any other Kubrick movie you'll see but it has its share of heavy moments. I thought the ending was a bit abrupt and bordering on anticlimactic, but other than that there's really no significant complaints to be made.

I was absolutely stunned by the quality of this movie, and how well the complex heist plan was presented. with a very lean running time of only 83 minutes, The Killing has you completely and utterly enthralled from start to finish. With excellent characters, plot, direction, cinematography, and choice of music I really can't recommend it enough to not only fans of Kubrick, but also to anyone with a passing interest in American cinema. Nikki and the guard's segment is perfect film making.

The frequent voice-over narrating is unnecessary and distracting, the dialogue is overwrought, and the acting is needlessly overdramatic. Granted, it IS a noir movie, but compared to this, The Maltese Falcon was subtle. Definitely not one of Kubrick's better films.

It doesn't recognizably feel like a Kubrick film, but that certainly doesn't make it bad. The plot is taut, the non-linear narrative is fascinating, and the heist is set up brilliantly. I'm tempted to say it's Kubrick's most imitable film, if not his best. It draws on many other heist movies and film noirs, and in turn, its influence seeps into Reservoir Dogs, The Dark Knight, Heat, The Usual Suspects, and many others.

The heist wasn't even half as spectacular as some reviews claim it to be, combined with a load of shallow and uninteresting characters the movie was - contrary to my expectations - a disappointment for me. Mostly enjoyable heist film that might have influenced Inception with its off-kilter timeline. There's a great femme fatale and an over-the-top plan that gives it a noir feel. As a minor issue, the music seemed a bit overbearing at points.

The Killing packs in enough events in just 80 minutes that it feels at least half an hour longer. Everything moves at a frightfully quick pace uncharacteristic of Kubrick. The movie also has a very jumpy chronology, constantly going back and forth between different characters at different points in time. It got rather confusing some times, but I quickly found that it was better not to get caught up in the minute details of robbery plan, and rather just go along with it all.

Sterling Hayden has a great presence but at the same time he's too much of a softie to be a bad guy here. Tight editing but interesting choice to backtrack through POVs. I have mixed feelings about the voiceovers. I instantly felt this was a good heist movie. Marie Windsor MVP and almost underutilized. Fav scenes: Windsor's introduction as Sherry and wrestler Kola Kwariani going HAM at the track bar.

Strikingly structured heist movie may have lost some of its novelty value in the wake of its imitators, but still presents a teasing narrative which keeps the viewer on the back foot until the climax when all threads are tightly drawn together. Kubrick's controlled direction is served well by his cast of colorful characters; the film is also highlighted by uproarious fight sequence featuring real-life wrestler Kwariani. A solid harbinger of things to come from Kubrick.

As far as heist movies go, this is one of the best. You follow along with all the characters who in the 80 odd minute running time you get to know a great deal in their escapade. Hayden was a great leading man but he doesn't blow his fellow cast out of the water as they all hold their own. Kubrick can be thanked for that also as he strung it all together perfectly to make one of the great suspenseful atmospheres.

Ruthless noir/heist with a fractured timeline. For the fifties it has a surprisingly heartfelt depiction of a gay man, just watch Jay C. Flippen's eyes after he makes a pass at Sterling Hayden's character and gets rejected. I liked the horse>car>plane thing it had going on: starts at the racetrack/ends at the airport, horseshoe gets stuck in a tire. There seems to be this fear about the recent evolution of transportation, killing the horse and being undone by the machine that comes after.

A gripping, tense heist noir. This is the earliest heist film I've seen where the timeline jumps back and forth to show varying perspectives leading up to the big moment, and the way it's done here creates the perfect amount of tension. Most of the acting is stiff and uninspired. I liked the basic plan for stealing the racetrack money, but so many loose ends were left dangling that it narrowly succeeded. The ending was very weak, disappointing and entirely too tidy as they attempted to drive home the message that crime does not pay, but getting there mostly by happenstance. Maybe they should have named this movie "Karma's a bitch", or "Bad guys can't win". Sheesh!

Early signs of Kubrick's brilliant directing skill. Tightly filmed sequences & thought-provoking dialogue with a compelling overlapping narrative that gives multiple perspectives of the events leading up to the heist. Comments on the power of fate/irony over planning and scheming make for an introspective noir. Not as iconoclastic as future Kubrick, but each quick look into the lives of folks involved in the robbery plot make it much more convincing by giving each character an authentic story.

Although not a truly definitive work by any means, this early Kubrick film about a bungled heist shown from multiple perspectives was a clear influence on Reservoir Dogs and remains the first real showcase of his great talent.
