There's something about the character design and animation of the King that's incredibly well executed while being so aesthetically unpleasing I found him difficult to look at. And just so, the film is a contradiction on many levels. A classic fairytale with modern cynicism and it doesn't necessarily work. It's perhaps most interestingly viewed as a rather unexpected French bridge between Disney and Ghibli.

Okay, but not the mecca of animation it's often held up as, mainly due to a lackluster plot and some irritating character design. Still, there are enough moments of genius to make it worth watching.

Good story with some sweet animation and strong use of sound.

Great music, good animation .. but story, screenplay.. hmm.. maybe I am missing something, maybe there is subtler meaning to it, but seemed kind of hotchpotch to me. If you factor in the period in which this was created, a great effort. But I didn't get to enjoy it as much as I had hoped for. (Maybe language was the problem.. or some other thing..)

Stunningly beautiful, this classic French animation masterpiece got a botched release in the '50's (against Grimault's wishes) under the title "La Bergère et le Ramoneur", and was properly completed and re-released in 1980. Not much dialogue, but Prévert's unique brand of poetry pervades the whole film, and the animation is flawless. Oh - and a magnificent score by Wojciech Kilar. An absolute gem.

Extraordinarily beautiful stylistically speaking. The character animation is of the highest level. Smooth as a baby's butt cheek. Fantastic backgrounds and the kings character design is magnificent. Storywise not that great, but i was constantly drawn to the screen.

Slow and stylish. Well done. Only a bit cheesy with the good characters, but the King rocks! By the way it's important to watch the French version. Apparently they sweetened up the English one, even added some substitute scenes.

The animation style is interesting and the soundscape works pretty well. Unfortunately too boring to thoroughly enjoy.

A really beautifully animated film that I can't say really held my interest at all.
