First things first: Billy Mitchell is a classless prick and a cheater. His opponent, Steve Wiebe, seems like a swell guy who just wants to play the damned game and doesn't care much about nerd super-stardom. That being said, I think this film uses some selective editing to make the differences between them a little more pronounced. It badly wants to be an underdog story, and succeeds in that respect; I was pulling for Wiebe all the way. But I don't think the documentation was entirely fair.

The whole thing is like a real game of Donkey Kong: Steve keeps reaching his Princess Peach: the high score, but Billy Mitchell, like Donkey Kong, keeps snatching the Princess away once he reaches the top. Maybe a bit overly manipulative, but Mitchell's obvious double-standard (even without editing) probably deserves it.

Strong candidate for funniest documentary ever. It's sub-culture exploitation for sure, but there is just something so undeniably evil about barbeque-sauce Mitchell and his geek minions, and something so sweet about Steve's never-has-been persona. Set on the backdrop of American middleclass, the struggle to be the best at something so silly becomes honestly epic. You're laughing at them, sure, but afterwards, you're laughing at yourself for getting so worked up about fucking Donkey Kong.

Nerds being obsessed with nerdy stuff can be both entertaining and quite sad. Especially when they can't see how irrelevant their interests really are. Anyhoo, I'd better be off. Fine underdog sportsmovie. Only instead of sports we have this one arcade game from '81. And instead of evil sportsfolk that our hero has to beat we have this super sad looser that sells BBQsauce for a living and thinks he's a star. Seriously: any overlap between my world and his is entirely coincidencial. And instead of cheering fans we have, well nobody. Anywho: If this story doesn't deserve to be made into a major motion picture starring Tom Cruise as Billy Mitchell, I don't know what does...

On the surface, it's about Nintendo and people who take it a little too seriously. On the next level, it's an awesome underdog sports movie. On the next, it's a fascinating character study of a man beat down by years of failure and driven to succeed. And on another, it's about our collective will to achieve greatness, and the struggle against anonymity. It's my favorite documentary of the last several years.

WOW! Well I will freely admit it... I had my laptop out before the movie was even over looking for Billy Mitchell's contact info to let him know EXACTLY what I thought of him, and his taped title. THe documentary was very well done, and worth watching. It's a bit slow at the beginning, but if you can make it past the half hour mark you'll find yourself audibly cheering Steve Weibe on.

People often ask ask me how they can make a documentary as funny, bizarre, and revealing as "The King of Kong." I tell them forget it: it's in your DNA. Either you have it or you don't. And if you do want to make a documentary this good, thereby writing your name into history, you have to pay the price. I'd write more, but there's a Donkey Kong kill screen coming up.

Though this is a great, compelling film in its own right, it also has the distinction of being the only documentary that I'd like to see dramatized into a feature film. Never in my life have I witnessed a human being who resembled a Ben Stiller villain as thoroughly as Billy Mitchell; clearly this is the man Stiller was born to play. Cast Nathan Fillion as underdog science teacher, and all around nice guy, Steve Wiebe and I'd pay ten bucks to see to watch this story unfold all over again.

A decent documentary, although its editing is clearly manipulative to make Steve Weibe to be the underdog and Billy Mitchell to be the smug douchebag who is willing to bend the rules to maintain his title. That aside, this is a good movie to check out if you're remotely interested in video games. You couldn't write stranger characters than these.

Why am I caring about a movie that explores the world of Donkey Kong? That said, Billy Mitchell is a little bitch, but at the same oddly incredibly awesome. 'No matter what I say, it's going to be controversial. Sort of like the abortion issue.'

A case where the specific becomes universal - you don't need to know anything about the arcade game world to become sucked into the depiction of petty power games and (perhaps sad in any another context) one-upsmanship between these brutal competitors; proof positive that any hermetically sealed community at even the lowest levels is rife with ugly back-biting and snarky sabotage. Certainly plays as much more fun than I'm likely describing, with Wiebe and Mitchell endearing protagonists.

Very few documentaries have caught my attention quite like the King of Kong. It is a mixture of lovable/hateable characters, great film making, and a subject that makes the nerd in me want to play some classic arcade. While it may be biased, you won't care because Wiebe is such a nice guy and Mitchell is a prick...also you shouldn't care because its just about Donkey Kong. Watch this movie.

Billy Mitchell's sheer douchebaggery could be the sole star of an entire documentary mini series and it would be one of the best things ever recorded. Those ties! That hair! "Not even Helen of Troy had that much attention". "On my phone it says never surrender" "Excuse me guy I have a celebrity in the car can I cut in front of you" - *steps out of minivan* Fuckin lol. Proving that a documentary can create characters you can root for and have little twists that make it both exciting and enjoyable, as much as any fictional sports underdog movie. Is it slightly biased in Wiebe's favor? Probably, but this is as much of his story as it is a historical record, and it's that much more satisfying because of it.

As the cliche goes, truth is stranger than fiction, and while the film makers desire to create a linear heroes-and-villains narrative is rather problematic, this is a compelling, if somewhat biased, exploration of a hermetically sealed world of obsessive middle aged gamers who compete for world records like overgrown children. As the story develops, the realisation occurs that the world of competitive gaming is really a microcosm of American society where the only glory lies in winning.

The facts in the movie being slightly skewed by the creators should really make it like it less, but it just doesn't. Billy Mitchell and Brian Kuh are such a pair of dweebs and it is so fun to watch them douche their way around this movie. Some of the sentences spoken in this movie are too nerdy to be real. Everyone crowding around and getting super excited over seeing a glitchy screen on an arcade game was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Plenty can be made fun of here. A guy who would rather play one video game over and over again then work or play with his kids. A guy who acts like a celebrity (Mitchell) because of a high score in Kong (and people buying into it). The line that got me thinking was from a random arcade fanatics, "Hey I don't drink. I don't smoke or do drugs. I just play video games". I realized he's right and good for him for having a healthy outlet, and that this doc had actually taught me something.

Watching these guys kick ass at Donkey Kong was pretty impressive. But the real compelling aspect of this story is David and Goliath -- Wiebe vs. the old champion Billy Mitchell. Mitchell is one of the great despicable villains of film, a real douchebag. His weasel-ly ways and toadying henchmen make for riveting viewing. However, some of the facts have been called into question, which reduces the impact of the film.

It takes a certain kind of character to be obsessive enough to dedicate their life to something the rest of us find trivial, and these characters make great documentary material. It suffers a little in that the makers try a bit too hard to induce drama at times, but it's still a fascinating and often hilarious tale. I could easily imagine Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller turning this into a comedy, but it wouldn't be as funny or engaging.

The most gripping, heart wrenching, exciting film since Spellbound. I can't even begin to tell you how incredible this film is. TRUE heroes and villains. So many amazing characters, so many touching themes, a true masterpiece of documentary film making. This is not a movie about video games, ts a film about fame versus true greatness and the heroes and villains that surround us, average middle-class white Americans, everyday. Never have I seen a truer example of a "minion.".

Ooooh, Billy Mitchell. He was great, obviously, but his lackey/sycophantic underling might have been even MORE interesting...in a pathetic sort of way. You really can't write stuff like this. Or rather, you could, but it would wind up with Vince Vaughn as Steve Weibe and Ben Stiller with a "hilarious" mustache and mullet wig as Billy Mitchell. So I'm glad someone made the documentary first and headed them off at the pass. Bonus points for that.

As an avid spectator of modern eSports, I keep saying that there needs to be villains. Toxic attitudes shouldn't be encouraged, but cocky attitudes shouldn't be discouraged either. Billy Mitchell in this documentary is proof that a good villain could make absolutely anything entertaining. Since the release of this film it has come out that Billy Mitchell's record run was played on an emulator and not an actual arcade machine, leading to him being removed from the record books. This only further highlights how much of a sick joke it is for Wiebe to be jerked around over his record-breaking runs. More emphasis on Billy's perspective would have been appreciated, to make his fall all the sweeter. The film itself is serviceable, though notably dishonest at times.

What follows is a strange journey to arcades in the northeast and in Florida, where Weibe's attempts can be documented by officials from Twin Galaxies. There are attempts at sabotage, sneaky photographs taken by visitors to Weibe's home, accusations of cheating, and the appearance of bald-faced lying. The film is very interesting up until the last twenty minutes or so, when all I wanted was to be told how things worked out.

Absolute truth in question, we can only engage this along lines of the narrative it presents, which is essentially an underdog triumph and the comeuppance of a bully. The portrayal of Wiebe is touching; socially uneasy but a genuinely good guy, he wrestles with balancing his family life and obsessive behavior. The Redmond sections of the film are the most powerful pieces here. Mitchell is a different story, but there's a slant here, and picking on nerds, even bully nerds, feels strange to me.
