The King's Choice

A political film about the meeting of an unstoppable force and an immovable object. The film is not as effective when it steers away from King Haakon, but I did find an equally fascinating character in the peace-loving and neutral (Nazi) German ambassador, caught between the two deeply opposing forces, and his own conscience.

Really good historical drama well acted by all concerned. Well worth a look.

Pretty good, would have liked to see more of the royal family.

The mix of Danish, Norwegian, German and a bit of English made it hard to follow, but combined with the frequent use of hand held camera, it gave a documentarish feel, which lent a very distinct style to the movie.

Technically I should be disqualified from scoring Kongens Nei [The King's Choice] (2016) as it's a movie that triggers all the nationalistic senses and what it is to be a Norwegian. Such an amazing intimate feel into the days of April 1940 when Hitler invaded Norway. Only real criticism is that Anders Baasmo Christiansen didn't really convince me he was Olav. But Jesper Christensen as King Haakon... just WOW! So real it takes ones heart and transports it back to the days the war started for us.

The historical facts are more exciting than the movie itself that revolves around a rarely aloof and surprisingly wooden Jesper Christensen. The German diplomat is the most interesting character.

I like films which do not attempt to cut lines short with history, plus this shows complexity of character of the personalities also.
