There's a point where an entire village is gaslighting the guy that his wife never existed, and it had the right amount of paranoia feel to be convincing and therefore disturbing. This falls somewhere between the early Hammer Dracula efforts and the later buxom brunette vampire movies affectionately labelled by me as Double D Dracula movies (or DDracula. It's subtle enough). I probably prefer either of those but this is still solid cinema. Ok, I definitely prefer the one of those.

After watching 6 Drac movies I can't help but be impressed by Hammer's screenwriting. There are always some small plotholes that could've been tightened up, but damn if they don't do their best to try new franchise variations. There are several new elements here & Hammer - as usual - smartly hooks the viewer in by letting us know a vampire's afoot, but the hows & whats are different - esp the end. The 2 leads are bland but sympathetic & the sense that vampirism is betrayal of love much bigger.

When it comes to Hammer without the star power this one comes close to the top. Something of a play on conventions with modern day horror troupes being played out at the turn of the century. Unfortunately between the end and the beginning nothing much happens and without charismatic actors becomes a bit of a chore. Still the final act is rather novel and well executed while Hammer seems to have invested the extra cash it saved eschewing stars into its sets and production value. Recommended.

Rarely has the union between vampirism and venereal disease, or the theme of the decadent rich preying on their innocent social inferiors, been more cogently presented than in this movie. Sharp mixes suspense and horror in equal measure, while the perfs (particularly by sworn foes Willman and Evans) and textured characterizations are uniformly excellent, and the elaborate period re-creation greatly abets the film's atmosphere.

First off I just have to say this is a really great looking film. The precredit sequence was a great way to open the film. I ended up liking this movie much better than most of the Hammer Dracula films.

Among the lamest Hammer horror films. It's a decent premise but it doesn't do much with it and feels very drawn out.

Box obras-primas do Cinema Coleção Studio Hammer Volume 1.

I don't know if it's a remnant from the '40s-'50s storytelling practices, but some characters show incommensurable stupidity at times, and wooden reactions (blank instead of fear or horror or whatnot), but otherwise it's an interesting twist on Dracula-like tales. When the mystery unfolds, it improves and it's quite fun actually. Hilarious ending. I was randomly surprised by the drunk POV shakycam.
