Can I just say how under-appreciated Stanwyck is? Absolutely magnetic, full of charm and wit. Fully takes over every scene she is in. Oh yeah, Fonda is good too.

You let me down, 1001 Movies book. Why this film is beloved, I can't understand. Stanwyck's character is awful and Fonda's is a ridiculous dupe. I was just tense throughout, and was rewarded with an ending that didn't make sense at all. At least the acting was decent.

Fairly good screwball comedy, filled with a delightful cast who impressively danced around Fonda's uncharacteristic foray into comedy. I really wanted a better ending, but the story is Stanwyck's (not Fonda's) so I guess it works.

Sturges' The Lady Eve is truly the finest romantic comedy to come out of Hollywood's Golden Age. Abounding with charm and wit at every turn, it perfectly toes the line between believable and utterly ridiculous, features many wonderfully-drawn characters and boasts one of cinema's most perfect endings. Stanwyck and Fonda are magical together.

Starts off strong but then goes into the realm of nowhere. It's a well written, funny film with an awful story. Nothing is learned, no one gets their comeuppance, plot threads are left loose, and just feels lazy.

Got to love a dame that basically spells it out for his oblivious victim that she's screwing him over! While I'm not totally gaga for Preston Sturges, I am a mug for just about everyone else involved here. Delightful sucker talk, delightful phonies... delightful screwball.

The interaction between Stanwyck and Fonda makes the film enjoyable. Sturges uses cuts to steam whistles and racing trains to great effect.

A romantic comedy that also happens to be both genuinely funny and alluringly sexy, so much so that I'm surprised it got past Hollywood censors. Stanwyck is absolutely amazing in her role and the both the script and film are well-paced and well-made. Also of note, this film probably has the most hilarious scene involving a horse in Hollywood history.
