Ben Mendelsohn normally does 'mid-life-crisis loser' really well, but not here, and that is mainly due to Holofocener's uninspired direction and corny script.

The kind of aimlessness I find enjoyable and disheartening at the same time.

It doesn't always register as it wants, but it manages to be corrosive and cute at the same time.

Ruminations on not growing up? That film never took off for me.

This movie moves in several directions at once. A man's midlife crisis is on display. The characters and events felt authentic, but the story seemed to meander. It has sadness, tragedy, struggling, and some tension, but not much joy or happiness. It was not particularly engaging. Good music. Worth watching but not extraordinary.

This is a nice film--it has its moments. It's an easy, mostly enjoyable watch. However, as others have mentioned, something just feels missing. It's not the cast. It's well filmed. I suppose the script is just a bit lacking, even though it's still a decent script. While the film has a lot to say, it definitely takes a more subtle approach, which makes it a bit dull. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the film. Even though the main role felt like it was written for Richard Gere, Mendelsohn does very well.

"I got a cigar burnt on my forehead [does that really get you your own hospital room, btw? I feel like not] so that totally makes up for all the shitty and inexplicable things I did and definitely warrants my redemption and slight smile to end the film." NOT. Compelling enough content and characters, but it's awkwardly written (so much contrived swearing) and very poorly edited (scenes are jarringly mushed together, and even the seams between different takes for a scene are noticeable).
