This movie pissed me off, big time. Here was a chance for Shyamalan to redeem himself for his previous misfires by adapting an awesome animated show with great characters, a rich mythology, cool action scenes, and an enthusiastic fanbase. Slam-dunk, right? But no. Shyamalan screwed up every aspect of this project to create a cinematic turd of epic proportions. Horrible writing, directing, acting, and action. Forget this movie exists and just watch the show.

The trajectory of Shyamalan's career is bewildering. Tragic, even. Those responsible for greenlighting this script and approving the cast should be punished severely. You'll find more professional delivery of better written dialogue in most school plays. Night is clearly in way over his head. Which is too bad because the element bending effects don't look half bad. Any potential is obliterated, though, by a nonsensical (but often hilariously overexplained) story and utter directorial ineptitude.

The single worst big-budget blockbuster since Batman and Robin. No filmmaker has ever destroyed such great material so thoroughly and effectively as Mr. Shyamalan has here.

Manages to transform a TV show with great characters, mythology, and action scenes into a film with cardboard-cutout ciphers, a bland mythology, and (most bafflingly, given their big Hollywood budget) turgid action scenes that feel smaller in scope than the ones on the actual small screen did. Some of the art design is strong and the bending occasionally looks cool, but M. Night Shyamalan's skill at directing dialogue scenes makes Michael Bay look like Paul Thomas Anderson.

It represents a sad betrayal of the terrific TV series. Shyamalan obviously tried to stay loyal to main points of the story, but craming all the "dramatic" points from 15+ hours of a tv show into a 1 1/2 hour movie? Bad idea. We lose all the essence of what made the characters great. Aang was decent but Katara and Sokka are completely "white-washed," yes, a purposeful double entendre. By trying to fit so much stuff into the film, we end up having no character development or valuable content.

Okay, but it has some bad acting and the story would be confusing as hell if I didn't already kinda know it. Condensing 20 episodes of a TV show into a film pretty much chucks out any character development and fills the movie with lengthy exposition scenes. This just makes me want to go back and finish watching the series instead of wanting to see a sequel. Also, all the good guys are white and all the bad guys are brown. Good job, Hollywood.

The Last Airbender is the last word on absurdity, and a perfect way to counter insomnia. I haven't had more turn offs from any movie other than this. Not even Revenge of the Fallen. (Yup, Revenge of the Fallen tops this one) Makes me wonder something about Shyamalan. Are his last three films just a stroke of bad luck? Or the first three were a fluke?

Family fantasy about a 12 year-old boy who, as the sole person in the world who can control all the elements, provides hope for freeing the world from the chaos that consumes it. a joyless, soulless, muddled mess... has epic scope and soaring ambitions, exotic locations and a cast of thousands, but manages to get everything wrong on every level.... The script is so incomprehensible, it's often difficult to follow.

This movie is...bad. Yes, it turns out the critically lambasted, unbelievably expensive special effects demo is indeed as stupid and boring as everyone has already said it is. There's more than a helping of typically uninspired, ugly green-screen Industrial Light & Magic CGI, with which the child actors who lead the picture struggle to integrate themselves, and the script is awful and inorganic. Oh, Shyamalan of the immortal Unbreakable days, where hast thou hidden, and will you ever return?

I'll try and fit in my hate in 500 characters but there's no way I can get it all in. So forgive me if I miss something and the shouting. That said, THIS IS THE MOST INCOMPETENT FILM I'VE EVER SEEN. The story is hopelessly mangled and garbled. You can drive a truck through the plot holes - I even stopped the film at once to complain about the "trapping Magneto in a scrapyard" level of dumb, only to have Aang point this out TO THE VILLAGERS THEMSELVES. And I'm not even a fan of the cartoon. Gods

The amount of explanation and re-explanation regarding every single plot point within this movie only leads me to believe that M. Night Shyamalan made this movie for people with anterograde amnesia (the condition Guy Pearce had in Memento).

Trying to shove an entire season's worth of plot into a film less than two hours? Yeah, like that would work. The action scenes are so poorly staged, it's like M. Night watched Children of Men and failed to realize that choreography is essential to long takes. Bad acting certainly doesn't help. I haven't seen the series but this didn't turn me off to it, since it's obvious even to me how much has been chopped out, and it's not an accurate representation of the original.

Not nearly as bad as people were saying it was. This movie did have a very Nickelodeon feel to it (since that was the studio that released it) but it also had a lot of really beautiful scenes. I don't know much about Avatar so I don't know if this was even comparable to the anime series, which might be a good thing I guess and probably why I didn't tear this movie apart. About the worst thing about this movie would be some of the acting, a lot of child actors and it is hard for them to do well

I liked the bending a lot, but everything else was pretty bad. If you watch the original show, it's terrible. If you look at it as a different story, it's a little better. Complete disaster, everything was done wrong and they rushed through the movie to tell as much as possible from Season 1... in an hour and thirty film. The Acting is horrible, everyone says the characters names wrong, the cinematography improved a bit from M. Night's previous films. The battle scenes are done bad and exposition was all over the place and terrible! The worst part is the let down ending and how climatic it was and then don't do anything. A terrible disgraceful film to cinema!

Shyamalan just can't adapt his sensibilities to the blockbuster format and the result is an awkward mess. Visually stunning, with complicated action pieces and nice small details to enjoy, but ruined by the poor casting choices (nothing to do with the race controversy), the condensed narrative and inexcusable dialogue. Shyamalan's fundamental mistake here is that for the first time in his career he treats his child characters as real children. It's a failure for sure, but an interesting one.

I wanted so much to like this film. But unfortunately M. Night Shchamalamadingdong managed to nip that in the butt. They ran out of budget, they attempted to cram an entire series of information into one film, and they wasted all of their funding on the special effects involved. Ultimately I could think of a hundred better things to do with a blank DVD than put this film on it.

The acting is unanimously bad and Shyamalan's script consistently falls flat, creating a choppy and uneven viewing experience. The story simply never comes together for new viewers. At the same time, this is a children-fantasy-epic and so I can be a little more forgiving of bad acting and a choppy script, especially when 'Airbender' is often a visual wonder to behold, full of impressive landscapes and giant special effects. Leave it to Shyamalan to ruin a promising potential franchise.

I did not find it as bad as my PSI says it is. Having watched the original, this film was done well. Going from 10+ hours of material to a little under 2 and keeping the heart of the story without any 'huh' moments is no easy feat. I didn't have much problem with the cast, sure the brother and sister weren't the best actors, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the film. Think there's so much hate for the film because it's Shyamalan and because of a white Aang.

From the moment I saw the credits, I could tell this should never have been made. It physically hurt at some moments to see them destroy a series that was incredibly enjoyable and occasionally beautiful. It's a terrible sign when you still have exposition an hour into a 100 minute movie, and when human actors are less vivacious and realistic than animated characters. I hope Shyamalan has a great career ahead of him as a cinematographer, because he should never be allowed to direct a film again.

Incomprehensibly bad. Incompetent on every possible level. The special effects are bad and the movie looks ugly. The direction is clunky and sucks the energy out of every scene. Ignoring the ethnicity problem, the performances are laughable, though to be fair, I don't think anyone could deliver what might be some of the worst most awkwardly expository dialogue ever written. It only get the single point so I can make it clear that it's still somehow better than Lady in the Water.

You're supposed to feel 1 of 3 emotions after a Shyamalan movie: relief that it was only bad when you thought it'd be unbearable, contentment that it was as bad as you feared, or horror at how much worse it was than his other movies. From this, however, I felt something else altogether: disappointment. I thought with such a creative and intelligent source, how could he possibly ruin it? But by sucking out all the emotion, fun, depth and magnitude of Avatar, by god, he found a way.

A complete insult to the source material, but kind of fascinating in how inept it is. There is easily more exposition dialog than in any movie I've ever seen, its probably about 80% of all dialog. As a fan of the show I could follow the story, but I think I would have been pretty confused if I didn't know the show. Its almost worth seeing just to see how awful it is, but if you're a fan of the cartoon you'll probably hate it more than non fans.

Shyamalan has a go at an old-fashioned Saturday-matinee children's film. No surprises up his sleeve, he infuses it with a commendable fairy-tale earnestness, so that even the naivité has its charm ("It is time to show the Fire Nation that we believe in our beliefs as much as they believe in theirs"), and the creatures, the ships, the other special effects are more than acceptable, yet the whole thing feels somehow remote and uncompelling. And the after-the-fact conversion to 3-D is useless.

I've never seen the cartoon so I can come at this objectively. The first 2/3 of the film just blasts through the bare essentials of what it thinks we need to understand the last 1/3. When we get there, we've had nothing to gain any sort of emotional connection so when characters die and things are destroyed it means nothing. The final battle ending scene has all the makings of an exciting moment but just as something cool is about to happen... it stops.

Great special effects/3D and occasionally good art design. That's about it on the positive side. I can see where the series would have had its highs and lows (never watched the show, but I get the gist), and this hits none of them. The characters are completely without a personality, and the cookie-cut script with all the traditional cliches does nothing to help that. Also, I'm assuming there are sequels planned given the tease of an ending that only fans could understand, I guess...

Should just be called "Airbender: The Last Audiobook." There is so much vocal exposition throughout the entire movie you don't even need your eyes open to know what's going on. It's just so damn sloppy. And why on the Earth is the majority of the principle cast white? I mean really, the Shaolin monk character is white and his two Inuit compatriots are white as well. It's just jarring when everyone, except them, isn't Caucasian. I don't lie when I say this movie is certainly Shyamalan's worst.

The action can be a bit hit and miss, when it's good it's great though. The acting is pretty poor, the CGI is great, the script is average. Some of the editing is awful, like, there are times where it's just not cohesive at all. Seeing the show would have probably made me hate this, but as it stands now, I don't.
