It's the sort of film that would be shown on a Sunday afternoon on TBS, and the last few minutes are kind of a fart.

The script is a pile of smelly armpits, but Redford - although no three star general - has a certain charm throughout. Gandolfini works well as the bad guy, since he's not dashing and wears glasses. Beware of types like that, they're usually shifty in nature and unusually well-focused.

Don't take it too seriously and it's an OK watch. Beware though If you hate this type of American bullshit. Ridiculous in some points.

The movie has some really entertaining scenes. Like the medieval soldiers with shields, the trebuchet etc. And besides the acting of Redford and Gandolfini the movie ain't special.

Pathetic attempt to glorify and humanize a bunch of war criminals. Most prisoners are imprisoned for a reason, in this movie everyone's a hero and innocent, except for the staff of course. And it all ends with a flag. What else? Yawn. Just yawn.

Robert Redford is charismatic. It has lots of good tension, a somewhat interesting twist and good performances, but the plot and roles were implausible and one dimensional. It is ludicrous to suggest a 3 star general would end up in the general prison population. And once there, recruit every prisoner to his army in order to mount an uprising. The ending was worst of all. This tremendous cast was mostly wasted on this less than stellar story.

Discount Shawshank redemption with its dialogues apparently written by a third-grader display Redford absolutely bored out of his mind.

i remember this movie, about hard times in prison and abusive guards, just with the sundance kid as the lead, mark ruffalo as... mark ruffalo and the origional soprano himself as the trigger happy fat guy.

Not the best story in terms of filling in plot holes. But it is inspirational and fun. I mean, sure people can be in prison, but should they be tortured?

I won't spoil the film for you, but let's just say that it's decent, not superb like shawshank redemption, but decent enough to watch when you want to relax. It's ok basicly.

Surprisingly, pretty damn entertaining. The immensely likable Robert Redford is pitted against the immensely--at least here--unlikable James Gandolfini and the fur flies satisfyingly. The secondary characters are fleshed out just enough to add some real texture and the writing is good... all in all, a fairly intelligently put-together flick with good performances.

Redford's great and so is James Gandolfini but the story itself is pretty generic and really absurd. There are some moments that just take you out of any reality of the film, such as not using lethal ammunition when prisoners are throwing flaming cocktails at the guards. Still, it's worth seeing for Redford's performance.

Interesting to see a picture that works & delivers point for point what one expects. If the guy next to me is any indication, there are some exciting parts & some serious parts & then he was bawling at the end. I was interested in how this picture was basically a pissing contest played out by to ego inflated men although they seemed to try to justify/create right & wrong to bolster some flag waving patriotism.
