A preacher/hustler making a documentary about how he fakes exorcisms stumbles across what might be the real thing in a small New Orleans community. It's really slow to get going, and then ends suddenly right when it starts to get good. There's some fun pseudo-religious nonsense, but like most found-footage horror films, it largely consists of people running around and screaming in front of a shaky cam.

This was like Paranormal Activity meets The Village. In other words, utter shit. Characters were retarded, the plot is lazy and things that don't make sense or explained are just left behind for the sake of an ambiguous ending. It turned out to be really more stupid than expected. Also, the girl is a look-a-like to Michael Cera. On the bright side, hated it less than Paranormal.

Had so much potential. Not that frightening for a horror movie but has some great moments.. Oh but that ending.. How stupid can you get.. So disappointing. It was interesting to see the films form going from documentary to drama at the end with dialogue cuts and all that, I wasn't bothered until I saw the ending, but oh that ending.. Just ruined the whole movie..

Not only was this boring but the twist at the end made it even worse coming completely out of left field if for no other reason than for the director/writer to go "DID YOU SEE THAT COMING? NO? I DIDNT THINK SO HAHAHA" as they clap themselves on the back for coming up with a worse twist than M Night. I expected to like this much more than I ended up liking it after hearing good things but it's such a mediocre movie where almost nothing happens that...well, it sucks.

Despite the horror-poster and the build-up of the opening scenes, in the end the filmmakers seem to have wanted to give the impression that this movie rises above the level of a typical horror movie. The result, unfortunately, simply lacks either tension or shocks, fizzling out and leaving the viewer feeling like a victim of bad faith marketing. In short, it has the odour of a very cynical, but not very imaginative, moneymaking exercise.

Decent enough. Like everyone else I was underwhelmed by the ending. Cotton was a likeable character and the premise was interesting. Sort of felt like a blend of a few different horror films which probably took away from the experience rather than adding to it. I'd watch it again.

Top badass moment? Clearly surround sound hasn’t reached people in Louisiana, as they’ve been fooled by those 2 little speakers… 47 times. This is a movie that fails to answer any questions about what’s going on but remains entertaining. I wasn’t sure whether to root for the protagonist or want him horribly dismembered in an orgy of unacceptable, demonic violence. 1 cat (until it’s bludgeoned to death, when it becomes just a pile of red slime), no chainsaws or decapitations.

The Last Exorcism is occasionally creepy, but never downright scary. It has some genuinely good moments, like most of the time Ashley Bell gets to contort herself in various ways, but the mockumentary style of shooting ends up undermining most of that good effort. There are also too many points where nothing much happens, and also a very abrupt and unsatisfactory concluding scene. It's okay, but it's not great, and it also ends up being kind of silly, instead of frightening.

The ending is terrific; it strengthens the conceptual side of everything that comes before. (It's kind of a reverse House of the Devil, beginning as it does from the current found footage craze and working backwards, though with more meaningful commentary on the genre.) I particularly enjoyed the carefully crafted, quite charming vision-of-death collages, and the cartoon cat drawing. I was really hoping for cross-stitching at some point.

Overall, a solid and well-acted, if uninventive, combination of the Blair Witch Project and the Exorcist. This film does end with a final twist that certainly doesn't ruin the film but does redefine it. Ultimately though, I do think the film would have been significantly more interesting without the twist and with a more conclusive finale. However, that's not what this movie chose to be and it is a fine, tense horror flick as it is.

I hate mocumentaries. The movie started good, the lead was natural and they managed to build something... well, different in the end. And I actually liked the acrobatics they used instead of lousy special effects. Points for that. But let's be honest about it. The executing was pretty lame in large scale. As a movie they did not shake anything new out of the ground.

A pretty good exorcism movie, the shaky camera did bother me at times, especially in the final moments of the film. I did like the initial setup that a Pastor that doesn't believe in God continues to do exorcisms to just help out people he believes are having psychological problems. They also do a great job of setting up a lot of doubt whether this girl is actually possessed or faking it to get out of the trouble she is in. Ashley Bell did a wonderful acting job, we'll see how the sequel goes.

It a found footage film no better or worse than most. The concept is interesting and had they stuck with it the movie might have been better. The multiple endings kind of ruined the effect of the rest of the film, as any of the endings would have worked fine.

Not the worst horror movie ever made. There are plenty of good moments and I actually liked the documentary theme. The concept of trying to prove that exorcisms are all physiological and not real is a very interesting idea and one I was looking forward to exploring. Unfortunately I had a few problems, a score was not necessary and didn't work with the real time documentary look and feel. There just wasn't enough scares for me and it stuck with the usual horror clichés.

this one is remarkably less horrible than i would have assumed, in spite of my dislike for exorcism movies. it's a decent watch, and to a point plays out the way i would have wanted, but then the ending comes and blasts away all scraps of realism that remain for an exaggerated and grandiose ending.

This was one of the most well-put-together horror flicks of recent memory for me. It has a great premise and the execution to match. The scares were very real, the slow-built tension was just palpable in a way that only great horror flicks can deliver. I wasn't a fan of the ending at first; when it first happened, I was underwhelmed to the point that I was afraid it had ruined the movie. Very scary, very raw and realistic, doesn't rely too too heavily on jump-scares... just a superb horror.

Very Good. A sham exorcist meets his match in this mockumentary. Horror fans will be disappointed as the film is not about the devil but the Rev Cotton Marcus and his transition through the events portrayed. Good direction and great acting all round. The ending is jarring but the fleeting image of the doomed priest walking towards the towering inferno with his cross held high has jumped to my 'all-time favourite cine` moments' list. Recommended.

Can a film be "good" if 95% of it is tense, well acted, filmed and scripted? When the last 5% of it is just preposterous? The script is so desperate to get a twist into the end that it forgets that adults might be watching. just when you think it cant get any more stupid, it manages to achieve it. What is worse, is that the final scene is the definition of anticlimax .. expected, unscary, and in fact, welcome ... in order to stop any further nonsense. Credit to the actors, but the script stinks!

By the end of the film we know the answer to the question asked at the beginning of the review: "Who's playing whom?" The filmmaker is playing his audience. Like Cotton, he fills our minds with lots of flash and weirdness and words that seem like they're important. And then he takes our money. (pluggedin.com)

As much as I love found footage, this can't quite work for obvious reasons -- the acting, for example -- but some bits of it are good -- the mockumentary is actually fine, resembling Blair Witch with a couple of fake interviews about how this place of America is the gate to hell; the girl picking up the camera and killing the cat, then being interrupted seconds before smashing the reverend's head produces a thrilling sequence as well.

I liked the way it started very comfortably and built up the tension very slowly. I enjoyed watching it and thought it was worthy as an exorcism movie, and it did build up to a considerable level of emotional intensity. But I was a bit disappointed because I had expected to be a lot more terrified than I was. I expected a new masterpiece, a new Excorcist, and the movie seemed to be promising that throughout. If your expectations aren't that high you might like it more than I did.

There's a lot of small things I enjoyed about The Last Exorcism. The documentary style suits the material, the buildup is nice, the location and lighting were effective and the cast works pretty well. More creepy than scary though. The ending, while quite a shift from what came before, actually didn't bother me that much. Had sort of a Call of Cthulhu rpg feel to it.

Overall Enjoyment: 25/40, Plot/Themes: 15/20, Cinematography/Direction: 10/20, Acting/Writing: 15/20 Most of the time found footage movies have bland poorly developed characters. The main character in this film is well-written, well-acted, believable, and very charismatic. The parts in-between the scares are actually fun in this one, because the protagonist is so amusing.

This film deserves credit for showing far more restraint than I would have assumed based on the trailer(which I contend is the new record holder for the most uses of the bone cracking sound effect in a span of 3 minutes). It also does a good job of unraveling it's story without completely tipping it's hand. But Patrick Fabian is never convincing as an Evangelical preacher who has lost his faith and this movie's third act is a mess.

Okay, lets start with the good. It is interesting to watch. The documentary style is great, surprisingly, and makes certain moments much greater than they have any real right to be. Now the bad. The plot is contrived beyond belief, and the ending is just ridiculous. It packs a terrific punch, coming literally out of nowhere, but when you sit back and think about it...it's just stupid. Another flaw is the fact it isn't very scary. It is disturbing and disgusting, but not frightening. Meh.

The Last Exorcism is not ineffective. It does manage to create an atmosphere of pending doom. Still, whatever anticipation the viewer may experience during the first act is then rewarded with a pastiche of The Blair Witch Project, The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby. A good scare requires the element of surprise, so for your movie to be genuinely scary you have to be willing to invest a little originality. Also, low-budget documentary style and a string section original soundtrack are either/or.

I can't say I gave THE LAST EXORCISM my full attention at all times, but I feel confident in my opinion of it at this point in time. It's okay; a found-footage story of a priest who performs fraudulent exorcisms who finds himself confronted with a particularly troublesome case. There are some good scares throughout, and Ashley Bell is effectively off-kilter as the victim, but the ending (SPOILERS) goes a bit off the rails, with a final shot far too reminiscent of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.

The best "horror" movie I saw in 2010. More than just a Paranormal Activity-like "security footage" movie clone, this is a thoughtful, realistic, film that thrills you while also having something deeper on its mind. Unbelievable performance by the leading lady. The commonly misunderstood ending is not only open to interpretation, but opens the whole movie to it. Great discussions of this on IMDB if you don't have a job :)

Another blair-witch-like trial of making something delusional, something that have to shake and make you believe, at least in a part of it. Filming from hand is not the way to become original (it's overrated), most of the things are predictable, acting is on a good level if you didn't see many thrillers this type. I've seen enough...This is ridiculous...and the last scene is so damn pathetic that I almost exploded with laugh first time during a so-called horror movie. One-timer. A common one.

I watched it just to see Caleb Landry Jones, expected some minor scares, ridiculous posession scenes with mashed peas and an old priest praying in front of a mirror for his lost faith. I was so wrong... While I hate Blair witch and it's lame handheld camera, here I felt it was a great addition. The preacher is funny and not annoying. The posession scenes were awesome. If you really try to figure it out instead of enjoying, it may be mediocre. The ending makes it easy to sleep without nightmares.
