The aesthetic makes the unoriginal plot and inconsistent pace worth investing in; any movie where the good guys are immediately identified by the length of their hair and beards and spend a good deal of the film's runtime zipping around picturesque snowy environments on skis wearing furs and wielding axes is a movie worth watching.

"A story of legendary bravery". The year 1205. Norway is torn apart by civil war. With the help of a shabby group of insurgents called the Berkenbenen (Birkebeiner), the Norwegian king fights for survival against the Church and her bishops, who want to be victorious at all costs. While the king is on his deathbed, his only heir is secretly born. A boy who wishes half of the kingdom dead, but will protect those two men at any cost...

In medieval Norway, all mountains lead downhill, making it easy to X-treme ski from one village to the next...until you reach the fjords and are screwed.

Looks like Nils Gaup tried to do another Ofelas (1987). Doesn't quite connect in the same way, but Birkebeinerne [The Last King] (2016) is a film of international quality and might intrigue with it's snowy 13th century adventures.
