Fifty years ago there were close to half-a-million lions in Africa. Today there are around 20,000. To make matters worse, lions, unlike elephants, which are far more numerous, have virtually no protection under government mandate or through international accords. This is the jumping-off point for a disturbing, well-researched and beautifully made cri de coeur from husband and wife team Dereck and Beverly Joubert... (Palm Springs Internation Film Festival)

I'm no expert in lions, but I think this documentary gives them and other animals too much human emotions. Also, I don't think stuff like 'roaring for gods' actually happens in animal world. I don't remember another nature documentary with this much drama and back and forth action. Sceptic in me says that the footage was edited a lot to achieve that. Very depressing! Some nice shots, but it seems to be post-processed a lot. Not the prettiest cinematography.

"So much is contained in the film, from real technical virtuosity to heart-wrenching moments of pathos, that it's a shame it seems satisfied to be so ordinary in other aspects." - Jesse Cataldo

An excellent documentary about lions. The quality of the production is very good, with excellent nature video and audio. Jeremy Irons is quite pleasing as the narrator, however the dialog itself was sometimes excessively melodramatic and was at times dreadfully sentimental. The struggle for survival by these animals is brutal and often unforgiving. Worth watching, but could be difficult for young children.
