I don't think Ji-woon Kim was able to tell how shitty Forest Whitaker is. Forest spends the entire movie with one emotion: retarded. More than three times he spins a chair yelling fuck. He also whispers words of amazement. SO BAD. Arnold ruled though and that's all that mattered going into this

What is it that makes people who pretend to be something they're not in order to reach the widest possible audience think that they can do a one-eighty and move into a career that actually matters? I'm so sick of politicians thinking they can be actors.

If I wanted something new, I would have plopped a fresh deodorizer in my toilet tank and watched as the water magically changed from clear to blue. The Last Stand had EXACTLY what I wanted from the return of the Governator: brainless story with Arnie at the helm and a lot of cool bit actors swabbing the deck? Check. Shriver-less Arnie blowing stuff up without worrying about the body count? Double check. Old Arnie saying "I'm too old for this." Triple check and check.

A solid, efficient, cleanly-shot display of gunfights, explosions, fast cars, and bloodshed. You know damn well if this kind of thing is for you or not. View or do not accordingly. (My one real gripe, even for the film being what it is: Too much CGI blood. Yes, filmmakers, we can tell the difference! Use the real wet red stuff!)

At times excessively violent and emotionally contrived 100 minutes Corvette commercial. The old school action is pretty sweet and Schwarzenegger pulls some awkward grins while blurting out his text incomprehensibly which was pretty hilarious, classic Aaahnuuld. Worth a watch if you're a fan.

This wasn't terrible. The Last Stand is a bit ridiculousness but hell if it doesn't have fun while trying. One of Arnold Schwarzenegger's best movies since the 90's. I always like Whitaker and Stormare and Guzman is always silly. Should be enough for Arnold's fans.

Arnold can still carry a movie by his own, The Last Stand is an old-fashioned action flick with a fresh feel thanks to Ji-woon Kim's direction; unfortunatly it looks like this won't be Kim's Hard Target and have him explode onto Hollywood.

Nolfi and Knauer (how's that for a band name?) have written a remarkably confused script for a silly action flick, and could've easily done away with Knoxville and one female character. I'm on the fence with the Corvette, though, as the idea reminded me of equal parts 'Knight Rider' and 'Cannonball Run'. I felt like I was being force fed my own childhood in all its macho terribleness, and yet I left singing that greatest of early-90s kids songs: "Arnold shots a Vickers gun, Doodaaah, Doodaah."

I really didn't think I'd like The Last Stand. But it's actually a gripping, thrilling and thoroughly involving movie that strikes a great balance of action thrills, intense drama, and light relief. It's funny, but not cringily so; it's action-packed, but not at the expense of story, and it can slow down when necessary. It's what a popcorn flick should be, an easy watch that doesn't insult your intelligence, and it's a shame it's bombed. full review at Letterboxd

Knoxville's Jackass stuff seems completely unnecessary, and Guzmán looks really bored, but this is, for better or worse, an entertaining, so-bad-it's-good return for Arnold. Ji-woon is unable to overcome the script's limitations, but still provides a couple of good scenes -- Arnold flying and making a headshot is brilliant. In a way, Last stand is also a comeback for a conservative, right-wing cinema that only could work if the director had a self-conscious, Expendables 2-like, sensibility.

Kim Ji-Woon is usually a pretty good director and this film smells of producer and studio fuckery. Besides the idiotic lines the action seems too polished and has none of the nuanced choreography or surprises of Kim's other films. Arnold's return is a snooze and he can't seem to squeeze any wit or emotion out of the already terrible lines. There is no excuse for this being a total failure given a few of the brilliant cast members not named Arnold or Knoxville. It's a basic cable action movie.

This is everything a watch-it-on-cable cheesy action flick needs. It's got Arnold, bad one liners, groan-worthy visual gags, a scenery-chewing villain (Stormare is way more entertaining than Noriega), a sharp visual sense thanks to Kim Ji-Woon, it's got cartoonish violence so bright red that it should make thoughtful viewers question why they're laughing but probably won't, and it's vile politically. It doesn't have anything it needs to be better than a watch-it-on-cable action flick, though.

Kim Jee-woon really helps to elevate a so-so action script into a real blast. Of course Arnold (and others) play a role in that, too. Forest Whitaker is really hitting cliche after cliche as a Fed, but something in it was hysterical to me. Great action throughout, but the last 3 action sequences are all different and all spectacular. A flawed film but an incredibly fun ride.

It's silly, but the action scenes have enough style and character to where it remains fun. It's filled with character actors each playing their appropriate assigned roles (yes, I'm even including Arnold as a character actor of sorts) and it's all harmless enough. There have been a lot worse action films recently than this. Pure, simple fluff.

It's like a modern cheesy '80s action movie. The action is super stylish, but it's got the bad jokes and goofy atmosphere of an old Schwarzenegger movie. IT EVEN ENDS WITH A FREEZE FRAME! COME ON THIS IS THE BEST! Fine, it's dumb, but it's the best kind of dumb. Kim Jee-woon is always doing his personal take on genre movies, and I love that when given the chance to work with Schwarzenegger, he makes his twist on the prototypical Schwarzenegger film.

This is a slow boil, with more character and nuance than any of Arnold's earlier shoot-em-ups. As ballistic and violent as this film is, it is very much a good old fashioned western in a modern small town setting. Even though this is Arnold's show, the supporting characters actually have a great deal of development, and a surprising amount of humor spills over into nearly every scene. The action set pieces are very creative, and for a patient audience, this is an enjoyably flawed film.

The Last Stand is jammed packed with action-movie tropes in a somewhat entertaining film that is tonally confused. A Mexican fugitive (who races cars), a FBI agent who's a little too invested in his job, the competent sheriff of a town of hicks, Russians covertly building a bridge; the entire thing is ludicrous. At times it works, particularly with Knoxville not taking his dialogue seriously. Poor CGI and bad camerawork don't really help. Even the theme seemed to be poking fun at the action.

I could not give a damn about any character or story element in The Last Stand. To be fair, making emotional connections to things has been difficult ever since I accidentally set that zoo on fire, but this movie doesn't even seem to try. It's so lazy, stupid and bland that you don't even realise the main villain spends 90% of the movie sitting in a car until it's almost over. Considering the director I expected so much more. Where did I leave that lighter fluid?

Not really a good action movie, but somewhat enjoyable, what with the small town charm, the camaraderie, and the two comical characters. "Twelve thousand Mexicans cross over every day, and you have a problem letting one cross back" -- the villain of the new Arnold Schwarzenegger film The Last Stand, makes a compelling argument. Considering KJW is my second favorite director, I was expecting this to be absolutely soulcrushing. And whilst the script is dire & the villain piss-weak, there's a lot of fun to be had and, as to be expected, some competent direction. Still, why is Arnie cutting a guy in half with a gatling gun not the best thing ever? A combination of vacuous studio action & CGI bloodshed, perhaps?

If nothing else, THE LAST STAND marks the welcome return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to leading roles--and here, at 65, he's in fine form. He's the sheriff of a small Arizona town which finds itself in the path of a fugitive drug lord (Eduardo Noriega). Does he rise to the challenge? You bet he does. A very satisfying entertainment, with plenty of guns, fights, chases, and jokes, and good work from Forest Whitaker, Luiz Guzman, Johnny Knoxville, and Peter Stormare. "Who are you?" "I'm the sheriff."

A very adequate action film, and proof that Arnold is still castable. Though it is simple, one-linerific and dumb, I enjoyed this film for its pace (once it gets going), cool villain (Stormare, not Noriega) and its cast - except Johnny Knoxville, who seems to be trying to ruin the film. Props for the last scene(s), featuring the only interesting car chase and the only interesting end fight I've seen in a long time. Not brilliant by any standard, but entertaining. The Last Stand was a film I had anticipated and waited a long time for. It marked the feature length comeback of one of my childhood heroes Arnold Schwarzenegger. Was it worth the wait? Overall probably not. Arnold is humorous but he is rusty and he delivers his lines gingerly. The set pieces featuring Arnold are great fun, but everything and everyone else is forgettable. The scale is small and the plot lacks originality, but its still great to have Arnold back I suppose.

The first hour's plainly frigging ludicrous--there's, like, super-fast sci-fi cars and broadly drawn bad guys and small town sheriff Arnie hanging up on the FBI and Johnny Knoxville leaping about like a doofus. The movie was full of...inspired casting. Johnny Knoxville and Luis Guzman had a fun chemistry with Arnold which made for a fun first half of the movie. I don't think it could have been better but it could have been much worse, if that makes sense. There is nothing exceedingly well done in this movie, but it just seems to hit the right notes to make it enjoyable. Arnie's return as a lead is a completely forgettable, but thoroughly entertaining 1h47m. It's full of narrative cliches, plot holes, the usual character types found in contemporary action films (the kooky guns dealer! the funny Mexican! the righteous female!), and stilted dialogue, but is balanced out by some hilarious moments (both intentional and unintentional), and genuinely fantastic gunplay. The film's final act, in particular, is a visceral thrill. Also, the wanton brutality was awesome.

Arnie tries his best Clint Eastwood impression as a grizzled sheriff forced to hold down the fort and prevent a Mexican drug lord(what else?) from crossing the border. Like many foreign directors shooting in America, Ji-woon does occasionally show us a glimpse of the familiar from slightly odd angles, but the poor script betrays him at every turn, and the film takes entirely too long to settle into a predictable groove which the action fails to offset when it finally arrives.

A tremendously enjoyable action movie. Arnold is still - even at this age - an unmatched action hero, blasting his way through the plot, mumbling oneliners with a deadpan expression. The trite plot is somehow saved by the tongue-in-cheek 'humor'. Unfortunately, whenever Johnny knoxville enters the scene, things tend to turn to shit.
