Involuntarily-retired Colonel Hyde recruits seven other dissatisfied ex-servicemen for a special project. Each of the men has a skeleton in the cupboard, is short of money, and is a service-trained expert in his field. The job is a bank robbery, and military discipline and planning are imposed by Hyde and second-in-command Race on the team, although civilian irritations do start getting in the way. (imdb)

Enjoyable heist film (a sort of British OCEAN'S ELEVEN) which kicks into gear once the heist begins, but is perhaps too leisurely setting up characters and situations in the first half. Patrick is a standout in the gang, and hilarious bit part for Oliver Reed makes for smooth entertainment.

Coming out right around the same time as Ocean's Eleven, this is the story of eight ex-military men plotting an elaborate robbery. Two minor complaints... it takes a little too long to introduce all the characters, and the ending lacks a little punch. Otherwise, a good heist film... not exceptional, but should please any fan of the genre.

A minor classic. (Oh, and blame the Irish while we're at it.)

"The League of Gentlemen" presents a masterfully crafted heist plot, offering a rich story at the expense of high-octane action, yet it remains thoroughly enjoyable. With its quintessentially British humor, the film demands attentiveness, rewarding viewers with its subtle wit.

A good heist film with a large cast of well-characterized crooks. It kind of peters out in the end, though.

A fun, well-mounted heist film with character and wit. It's rather light viewing but there are some genuinely tense setpieces. I could complain that some of the main characters aren't fleshed out enough but for a fairly lengthy film (110 minutes or so) it's consistently entertaining and moves along quickly.

a bit slow and ponderous and takes an awful lot of time to get to the heist which is all over in a flash. Predictable ending. Still, a nice enough slice of old school British cinema

This was an early film for Allied Film Makers, a production company founded by Basil Deardon, Jack Hawkins, Richard Attenborough and Bryan Forbes, and it was a sizable hit. You can clearly see why. It's a dryly humourous, very entertaining heist film with an excellent cast ... Nigel Patrick, Roger Livesey, Attenborough and Forbes are all in the group. The basic premise is extremely similar to "Ocean's 11", which was released the same year.

Coming out the same year as Ocean's Eleven, this British crime caper is full of some of the same tropes. A bunch of professional men coming together and doing something they shouldn't. This is refreshingly darker in tone as each of these men are really all that wholesome. Stylish and entertaining.
