The Legend of Hei

The Legend of Hei shares a few aesthetic notes with some of Studio Ghibli's beloved films, while delivering a more straightforward story. The 2D-animation is good but not spectacular, though it should satisfy most fans of the medium. The theme of the anthrosphere vs nature is handled well, with an intriguing perspective. The dialogue is a little hokey at times, but this could have just been the English dub. I didn't much care for Hei's mewling. Also a curious shoehorning of Nezha at the climax.

Chinese attempt at the emotional thing the Japanese do. Sweeping statement, but you can see the influence, and it struggles when applying the Ghibli feel. Yet, there is a lot of the same qualities there, especially when in cat mode. I had a good time with it, even if the emotional effect wasn't that strong for me.
