Unsurprisingly, this is aesthetically very impressive. The meandering story seems to have a lot to do with historical shifts in Georgia between Christianity and Islam; presumably the idea of a crumbling fortress has something to do with tyrannical injustice, but the allegorical significance of Vardo proposing that Zurab be imprisoned in its walls was not so clear to this viewer.

A PG Jodorowsky but with a good deal more authenticity. That said, there is an emotional alienation that makes one feel one is watching a documentary or one of Herzog's brooding rambles into fiction. As a result, it feels little more than film school praxis with very little raw emotion behind it. A pleasant and enjoyable film, but unmemorable and, at times, a little tedious.

Achingly beautiful & poetically abstract medley of Georgian folk tales that deals with history, myth & identity in a way reminiscent of Pasolini & Tarkovsky but in a style uniquely Parajanov. Engaging but demanding to follow, its sparse storytelling may feel rushed or fickle or just opaque but worked like a spell on me leaving me both satisfied & mystified. Also self-aware & humorous in an appropriate way. The dazzling visual compositions & vibrant detail are just screaming for a good remaster.

Paradjanov's best films were a curious blend of obscurantist arthouse and mythical folklore that somewhat resembled fractured fairy tales or avantgarde pop up books. T.L.O.T.S.F is a simple folk story that has been abstracted to the point of confusion. It's difficult to to tell where you are in the story, where it's taking place and who's doing what to whom, but it never feels fraudulent. It's just a product of a truly outre creative talent with a supreme command over his unique craft.
