Not at all as good as the first film. It's still good. I actually liked the simple yet important message. It's executed well, which is probably why it's aimed more for younger kids this time around. Still has plenty of laughs and it's still beautifully animated and very detailed. It doesn't have the impact of the first film but that's okay. I still had fun.

Doesn't really maintain the magic of the first one, despite keeping an almost identical plot and an even higher level of pop cultural references. I think the truth is most apparent in the songs - "Everything Is Awesome" was an unrestrained passionate bolt of magic. "Catchy Song" and "Everything's Not Awesome" both try to bottle that in different ways, but are both a little too self-aware this time around and can't really recapture the same charm.

Still has all the creativity and wit of the first film, but this one felt a little more palatable and commercialised overall. Still good fun though!

The LEGO Movie's greatest challenge was overcoming its novelty to prove it had a heart. The LEGO Movie 2's greatest challenge is to somehow replicate the success of the first one without falling into the sequel trap where it's repeating the same beats without bringing anything new to the table. Thankfully, The Second Part manages to do just that, keeping things just fresh enough to keep a smile on viewers' faces from beginning to end.

The first one was pretty good, but as is often the case with sequels, the magic is sucked out in the same way they try to slurp out more money. Avoid this one, even "Lego Ninjago" was better and I have no friggin clue what the hell a Ninjago is.

I liked it more than the first. The pacing was great, the humor was on point throughout, and geniunely funny movies are a very rare thing nowadays. Hilarious how the first couple minutes expose the whole plot but we don't even realize it until the end. One extra point for the role of the father and the credits.

That was unexpectedly dark. Very heartfelt in the end. I appreciated the space references and I'm sure I missed a bunch of others. It was jarring to discover the Systar System were actually misunderstood good guys, but I feel they should have leaned into that a bit more than the initial Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi song. The plot was pretty predictable from the start, including the "I'm you from the future" part. I enjoyed seeing worn out details in minifigs. Fav scene: Queen's first song.

After the Ninjago movie misfire the Lego franchise is back in form with this outstanding sequel. It had a few too many corny musical numbers and not all of the jokes work but it was otherwise every bit as outstanding as the first Lego movie and similarly blew my expectations away.

The Lego Movie 2 is a worthy successor to the first installment. In terms of humor and action, it treads a lot of the same ground as its predecessor, but there's still a good sense of fun and adventure throughout. Where it really shines, though, is in the third act. It goes in a similar direction as the first movie did, but it handles its themes in an even smarter and more even-handed way. It's exceptionally wise for a kids' movie, and I'm happy that many thousands of kids will be seeing it.

Way too many cringey songs this time around. Still has the Lord and Miller quickness but there just wasn't enough jokes. When it does hit tho it really hits. Also enough time has passed, can we all admit Elliot Smith sucks?

C/K - I think I enjoyed it more than the first one. The references to films kids won't have seen worked very well. I particularly liked the Blade Runner:2049/Mad Max look and feel of Apocalyplseburg in the early scenes.

"Catchy Song" is a good microcosm for everything that's wrong here. instead of just writing a catchy, silly tune like in the first movie, here they just tell it to you, overloading the meta-references to the point of obnoxiousness. no one asked for a sequel to the first one, so in response they decided to just make the first one again but without the novelty. the five year turnaround did no favors either, with a Mad Max parody already feeling fairly dated. also, fuck Chris Pratt's bigoted ass

I think I might have actually liked this one slightly more than the last. Its a fun movie filled with hilarious songs that are as catchy as can be and more heartwarming goop to shovel in your face. before these came out everyone thought lego was crazy, now theyre a massive hit machine. Still have not seen lego batman as of this review, thats gotta change. I really enjoyed this one though

The “message” of this movie is even stronger and more resonant than the first, with fantastic meta thematic work that brought my score up a lot. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie doesn’t live up to this, with the humour, visuals, and surface-level plot far below the high standard set by the original.

There's a certain sense of disillusionment that comes with creating a sequel to a film that, for all intents and purposes, didn't really need one. The Lego Movie seems to do alright, mostly because it finds a new voice for the sequel to take hold, but at the same time, embraces what it is. It's heartwarming, hilarious, and just as visually stunning as the last, so fans of the first with reasonable expectations should be satisfied.

I am happy to report that this movie gave me pretty much exactly what I wanted and looked for: an enjoyable and worthy sequel that didn't achieve the impact or impression of the first. I would have liked to see the heartfelt content show up earlier in the movie, but when it arrives, it's quality, and most of the technical and creative elements are as good as the original, even given the "second-time-around" syndrome. I do have to wonder aloud just how much more material there is to mine here.

Before seeing The Lego Movie 2, one has to reconcile that they're about to view a sequel to a masterpiece. And that's the trouble with sequels to masterpieces: they are almost ubiquitously a letdown. So, with that in the back of my mind, I came out of this pleased. It's a pleasing sequel. The humor is still great but not as fresh. The animation is still stunning but not as groundbreaking. The message for kids is wise but not as deftly delivered. It's still better than most kids fare by far.

I probably enjoyed The Lego Movie 2 just as much as the first one. There's a few sequences that replicate the original in parts, but new stuff such as musical numbers and unexpected subversions. As usual, Animation quality is top notch. The humour and style of the film is very similar to the original. The songs I thought were pretty decent. It's always going to be hard to top the original, but as an Animated sequel I think it delivered on giving us a movie that works both for kids and adults.

It's been a while since I've seen this, but I recall being massively disappointed for most of the duration as the first movie is one of my faves and I consider it a classic. 'The second part' comes nowhere close sadly but I believe the ending redeemed it from being a complete failure ... even though I don't recall the ending at this point and why I may have felt that way. Needs a rewatch but my expectations will be rock bottom next time around, which of course may help matters

Did Chris Miller and Phil Lord actually write this, because it certainly doesn't feel like. The real world parallel in "The Second Part" is infinitely forced and adds only tedium and annoyance. Lacks the wonderment, humor or originality of its prequel, replacing it only with Maya Rudolph, Tiffany Haddish and four musical numbers.

I actually give it a big thumbs up as a musical - catchy songs for sure; some decent laughs and fun vocal performances too. Ultimately it has a major “more of the same” feel to it though. The whole “live action section” twist at the end feels so much like a less surprising, watered down version of the first film that it left me a bit underwhelmed.

A cute sequel, where its biggest problem is having to live in the shadow of the first movie. Luckily it contains great animation and hilarious laugh out loud jokes. The plot doesn't feel like it is fully there, but the jokes more than make up for it.

A lot of what made the first movie so good was the element of surprise ... both in terms of how the story was going to be told and how it ultimately tied into the real world. Neither of these elements are a surprise here, and I think the movie suffers a great deal as a consequence. This is more of the same thing, all of it just a little inferior and losing the element of novelty. It's not awful, but with the exception of a few amazing moments, it's not good.

Supremely unfunny. The intermittent toy story gag is beaten absolutely to death, the story is a mess, not a single joke lands, and the "twist" message is broadcast so unsubtly so early that its resolution two hours later carries the relief of lancing a swollen fingertip with a hot needle through the nail: it's finally over, the pain will diminish.

"The LEGO Movie" was charming, delightful and unexpected. This doesn't quite cut it. It is still entertaining and fun (in parts), and there are plenty of jokes, delivered brilliantly by the fantastic voice cast. There are also some nice moments with a good message and has all the elements that made the original so great. So what went wrong? Perhaps it's LEGO fatigue or the lack of a surprise factor. It just feels like something is missing. Watch it. Just make sure you taper your expectations.

I really enjoyed the first Lego movie. The humor was quick and smart. The voice acting was well done. The music was catchy. The story was well suited for both kids and adults. This movie follows that same formula to a good effect but it feels more like well worn territory that a novel idea like the first movie. The story does have some twists in it and it pulls everything together to have a good message for the audience. The theme song is almost as fun and catchy as the one in the first film.

190519: Entertaining, probably a single watch film. Philosophically unsatisfying. The play together moral of the story feels weak. Maybe it really is that hard for siblings to get along, but it seems like even a basic effort to communicate could have helped. Moral #2, don't become the dude chicks want you to be and meditation on impermanence will turn you into the bad guy. I was kind of pumped about the destruction and disappointed at the direction that went.

The Lego Movie 2 was definitely a mixed bag for me. On the whole I enjoyed the film, with its catchy songs and emotionally manipulative Pixar-esque ending. These aspects also irritated me a little, especially as it often felt like the movie was interrupted for these “YouTube moments”. The entire film remains well-written and the jokes are a good mix of clever and silly. What I didn’t like was dismissiveness of the villain and the resignation that things can’t always be awesome.

It was still really good, but lost a lot of the charm of the first film. They tried to do something a bit clever introducing some sort of, if I remember correctly, time travel plot device, and... I don't know. I feel like I'm really missing something. I laughed, but honestly felt the last third of the film was a letdown, despite the ending being really pretty solid despite that. Not a terrible sequel, but disappointing coming off of what was a really fantastic first film.

The first movie had in its favor an element of surprise: taking a risk by creating its own zany language and logic, and following through with an actual, honest message. This film ups the ante on the message (I'm impressed by the grappling of toxic masculinity in puberty), but does not take the same risks with its world as The First Part. Without risk, it feels inferior.

With stunning animation and colorful characters, as well as the signature clever and meta humor of the original, it's packed with plenty of fun and is a very entertaining ride. However, its story can't quite match up to its visuals, and it suffers from a sometimes convoluted and often totally senseless plot. What makes it work in spite of that is how much charm and strong themes it does have. All in all, it's definitely worth a look.

Strays from the Lego-building humour into something which relies more on a lot of brand names. And for a while I thought they wanted to emulate Pixar, but it wisely steered clear of that challenge. I actually liked the ending best and the timey-wimey stuff, even of it was kinda ripped of from Zathura. Ah, Zathura. Now that's an underrated movie. I should watch it again.

A major drop off in hilarity and plot from the first one as it centers around a sibling squabble and plays its message rather loudly and annoyingly. Sort of the similar to the continuous mention of terrible pop music this film feels the need to mention that getting a long is always the better option. The message was simpler, less likable and aimed to take some of the parenting away from all parents whose kids probably argued about what movie they wanted to watch before settling on this one.
