This shouldn't work. It does work. This isn't simply nostalgia escapism, it is truly wonderful filmmaking at hand. Captures the imagination of lego to the full extent and try not to blink too often as you'll probably miss something utterly gorgeous. Every tongue in cheek line and lego block cameo is just home run after home run. Bravo.

The blocks are all in perfect place. The trailer made it seem like a direct-to-video movie, but it ends up being so much more than that. The “chosen one” plot has been told time and time again, but everything else is done so well that it really doesn’t matter. The animation is stunning, the characters are all likable or hilarious, and the humor and pacing came together perfectly. You’d have to be a little dead inside if you walked away from this saying none of it was good. A favorite of mine.

Thanks to intelligent and creative filmmakers, a hilarious script, fantastic voice work, and unique and gorgeous animation, The Lego Movie is a movie that you should not miss. Everything that it needed to do, it does wonderfully, and it even manages to avoid feeling like a commercial for its title product -- even though it will have that exact effect, especially on younger members of the audience. There are many jokes, surprises, and thrills to be had.

As cliched as it is, eeeeeverything is awesooooome in this movie! I'm very impressed not only with the quality of the animation (how did this not take at least a decade to make?), but with the quality of the story. I love when kids movies add adult subtext to their story; commentaries on Capitalism and freedom, some pretty high-level stuff coming from a nostalgia-driven kids movie. But that's the beauty -- Lego Movie is about so much more than just nostalgia. This is expert animated filmmaking.

How could a feature-length advertisement for a kiddie toy turn out to be both an endlessly smart and subversive satire of consumerist conformity and a self-aware mockery of popular Hollywood tropes? You'd be forgiven to think it impossible but that's exactly what The Lego Movie is.

Miller and Lord have mined the very idea of Lego right down to its most basic function and find in the toy a conflict on not only how to play with Legos, but how to live one's life in the same consumer-driven culture that would bring us a movie about Lego. Because these are the guys who made Clone High, every frame is packed with throwaway gags -- the attentive viewer will find new reasons to laugh every time. A potent and affecting emotional climax as well. Kids will love it. Adults should too.

I loved, loved, loved this! It made me feel giddy with pleasure from beginning to end. Mindfryingly cool animation, phenomenal pacing and hilarious jokes boost it to somewhere near the top of my respective lists of favorite family films and best animated comedies of all time. I'm sure it will only be even more awesome upon (probably numerous) rewatches. Because: "Everything is ..." NO, I've GOT to stop that.

I expected a good, well put-together movie, similar to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. I did not expect to get Toy Story mixed with Brazil, but I loved it. The cast and story are diverse and esoteric, but not in a way that's manic or excessive. The humor is wonderful, too -- after I left, I realized I hadn't heard a single fart. This film is like the Genie in Aladdin, except every single character is great. This is the kind of movie children -- no, families, should see. It's delightful.

Miller, Lord and co. rightfully know that for many of us a narrative film set to Legos will never be as good as the stories come up with on the fly as kids... playing with Legos. So to stay ingenuous, they embrace the Anything Goes aesthetic, but as a coup de grace, they go the step further and ask why we need the film in the first place. Answer: On your 1.5 hour way to work today, sing, "Everything is Awesome" on repeat. The truth will hit you harder than a credit card bill from the Lego Store.

Stellar voice acting, fantastic animation, loads of action and references. All that satisfies the film buff in me, yet it was also remarkably cute and charming. I got a huge kick out of Benny the retro spaceman, with his faded logo and silly jetpack -- and best of all he was voiced by Charlie Day. SPACESHIP!!!!!

Though jammed pack full of laughs and enough adventure to fill several movies, it never loses focus from its message: never stop being creative. This theme is juxtaposed against a fascist state in which everything is done, literally, by the manual. The movie has a heart and a great sense of wonder about it, and it never gets old seeing objects get thrown together. Backed by an great voice cast, score, witty script, and one of the most ironic songs in a movie, The LEGO Movie is a sight to see.

Everything is indeed awesome about this love letter to creativity. What one would expect to be a commercialized advertisement to a popular toy is actually a witty, intelligent and hilarious sermon to embrace your inner-child and let one's artistic freedom flow.

Often hilarious and it features some remarkable animation, but man, talk about sensory overload. The laugh-a-minute pace ended up exhausting me. Legos were pouring out of my orifices as I left the theater. The kitschy message didn't help things, either.

It's corporate art - and all the more corporate because it pretends to flirt with a subversive anti-corporate message. But it made me laugh and feel, so I genuinely enjoyed watching this clever, funny, and surprising film in the same way that I genuinely enjoy watching clever, funny and surprising tv adverts.

I very much enjoyed the reveal that the villain of the film is SPOILER ALERT the father. It's his own realization that touches me right in the parental sub-cockle. It takes over an hour and a half to do what Alike does in eight minutes, but it's fun. Now having said that, I still prefer The Wizard when it comes to shameless commercial film-making. But then again, I'm an idiot.

Dear Abby: The $70 box of Legos I got my son for Xmas came with 7 printed booklets of instructions. The $10 DVD of the Lego Movie that I got for my son for his birthday tells me that people who use instruction manuals are evil, boring Nazi conformists who deserve to die (or something like that). But without those instructions, I never would have been able to build that Legoland logistics warehouse (that stores Legos). But I don't want my son to be a Nazi. What do I do? - Legoless of Mirkwood

This movie is fast-paced and all over the place, but if you don't mind goofy physical comedy and quick line delivery then you'll be in for a treat. It's perfectly designed for millennials and their young kids who have lived in this world of pure imagination. The anti-establishment message is age-appropriate and the animation is award-worthy. Extra points because of Batman & hearing Liam Neeson get silly.

A wonderfully fun, inventive and imaginative romp - I think if you like Lego, you'll like this. I loved the look of the film - it appears very much like-stop motion using real Lego (even though it is CGI). The voice cast was very good. The wee spaceman fella made me go all nostalgic. Maybe it's a toy commercial, but it is a very good toy commercial, for a very good toy (imho).

Totally awesome. A wildly imaginative ride which, unlike the organization of my sock drawer, bursts with creativity. Not as much a shamelessly transparent attempt at product placement as a high-spirited reminder of the very thing the toy brick seems to stand for -- the spirit of creative freedom. Also contains what's arguably the greatest Star Wars joke ever.

Fahrenheit 451 but more awesome. They took Lego at its core principle, "There is no wrong way to play." And used it to make a movie with a convincing moral core. I think a lesser film maker would have stopped short and just gone with 'be creative!' but The Lego Movie respects that some people want to follow the rules, and that's awesome too! Just don't tell everyone else what to do.

Every year or two I'll see a movie that has no qualities I can criticize. Let me tell you, despite one of the best comedy teams of this generation behind the wheel, I did not see that coming for The Lego Movie. A film bursting with jokes, 99% of them hysterical and genius, and an unexpected heart by the end that tugged hard at my gruff sensibilities. Yeah, it's flawless. Never stale, always fun, always beautiful and creative; fuckin' hell, I love Lord and Miller.

You know what? I had fun. A hell of a lot of fun. More than enough to ignore the fact that some of the jokes are simple or the 'you had the power within you the whole time!' story is ridiculously basic. When there's just such an overwhelming sense of cute, colorful creativity, how can I not just sit back and enjoy? Those last few seconds made me laugh so hard. And Arnett as Batman? Genius.

It takes the cliched zero-to-hero story from a million films and turns it into a truly amazing film. The in-jokes, inventiveness, lighthearted social commentary and the visuals make this a total joy to watch. It's clear in every frame that everyone involved in this film poured their heart and soul into it. The result is one of the most inventive and funny family films in decades.

A lot of potential wasted on a neverending barrage of one liners and opposite-jokes to entertain ADHD-kids and -adults alike. There's funny, even social critic stuff, but you rarely have the time to let anything sink in, it's exhausting to keep up with what's happening. The batman song is a masterpiece of contemporary music though. Darkness...no parents...super rich...kinda makes it better!

Fairly predictable (making fun of cliches has become cliche by this point), but an enjoyable ride nonetheless. The animation is masterful, and while yes this is essentially a movie-length toy ad, what were you expecting? Playing up the freedom LEGO gives you to build is really the only way to go here, since it's absolutely true. Charlie Day kills it in his brief role.

Completely anarchic and chaotic piece of comedy that barrages you with so many jokes & gags (of varying levels of subtlety) that if you get even half of them, you'll be laughing your ass off. The visuals are riotously creative and almost disturbingly dense. I thought the live-action bits were thoroughly unnecessary and slowed down the otherwise hectic ride. In the end it's so charming and out-there it totally manages to get away with a rather cheesy message.

Heartfelt, crazy and funny as hell for all ages. The animation is fantastic and the concept brilliantly subversive. There's jokes for everyone here delivered at rapid fire speed and although some are likely to fall flat for you as a result, they move so quickly there really isn't too much room to complain, and the ending is genuinely touching. Often visually dazzling and a lot more ambitious and layered and surprising in its "hero's journey" storytelling than you might expect from its trailer. A lot of funny jokes. Cartoons (computer generated and otherwise) are not my bag. They pretty much begin and end with Wil E. Coyote (a personal hero of mine...guy never gives up) for me. So this is definitely not my scene, but after the deluge of "this had no right to be anything but terrible, and it's actually really good!" reviews, and a little coaxing from friends, I succumbed. And yeah, it's fun and ambitious. Still, I felt exhausted by all the lights and movement by the end. But I'm 35 w/ no kids, so, you know.

You can't help but have a smile on your face throughout this movie and even though the final act was a little off with the rest of the movie, it worked and brought another meaning to what the movie was about. An anarchic vision of childhood imagination, or a cynical pop culture laden commercial for building blocks? It's both, really, to its credit as well as its detriment. The energy manages to make it fun and funny, and the pacing largely manages to outrun the film's flaws, but the seams are always there and the film eventually decides to tear them apart completely to impart a moral. This undermines some of the film's spirit and reveals it's shallowness more nakedly, but I guess it was still fun.

I actually thought that a fair bit of the humour didn't work. But there were definitely some great laughs and a bunch of moments where I chuckled lightly to myself. Until the last half hour or so, I would have given a 70. But it kicks it up a notch. The social commentary is there through the whole thing but the way it ties Capitalism and lack of individuality into a child's creativity and an adults obsession with just "constructing" lego is nothing short of amazing.

It's not greater than the sum of its parts, but since its components (its pieces, or blocks, if you will) are so wonderful, the movie is as well. Wildly successful at appealing to all ages, and funnier and more pop culturally savvy than a kid's movie has a right to be, everything really is awesome about this. Somehow, this is a perfect movie. I absolutely loved how quickly it moves. This is only a half-baked theory, but I find that a lot of comedies either stop for jokes or stop for plot. Apatow movies tend to stop for jokes. Ted is an example of a movie that stops for plot. In The Lego Movie, both the plot and the jokes just increase the film's momentum. It's so rare and refreshing, I was blown away. Plus, anybody willing to put a 2001: A Space Odyssey thing in a kid's movie has my respect.

I've got to hand it to them: They came up with a plot dumber than 'Pacific Rim' and action sequences less comprehensible than 'Transformers'. A story as cliché as any Disney movie told in a pace faster than any J. J. Abrams effort, probably to cover up the fact that the jokes are weaker than those found in most Adam Sandler comedies. Not bad for a 90 minute commercial that they made people pay money to see. What I took from this: Kids ruin everything.

Not THAT masterpiece painted by some, but an electrifying animated movie that uses tons of pop references, nice punchlines -- the ghost saying "I liked him before he was cool", gratuitous and cartoonish violence scenes --, a catchy song -- you can't help but mentally sing Everything is Awesome at least once, specially its r&b post-credits version -- and lots of jokes about what makes the Lego universe so cool. Maybe too chaotic, but it is cool because it plays without instructions.

An imaginative romp as a self effacing never ending homage train of animation creativity. It doesn't try to blow smoke up our asses or insult our intelligence like Disney films do. The whole thing is downright cutesy at times but amusing nontheless. At times it goes off the rails with the pop culture references but it's more witty than the original Shrek which did the whole self aware thing years ago. A meticulously-animated blend of exciting kid-flick comedy-action, and insightful commentary on such. It works on so many different levels: there's the meta-referencing, there's the self-aware understanding of Lego and rules and what it means to break them; but there's also the thrilling action parody, the near-constant runs of insanely good jokes, and the beautifully realised, Lego-fied look. While this movie had the usual generous helpings of charm, wit and spectacular action sequences that we have come to expect from top animation producers, I was mildly disappointed by the end. The Lego world began to mirror what we saw in Wreck-It Ralph, while the plot ended up with echoes of Toy Story. There was some evidence of originality but the script felt like a rushed job and the characters had no more dimensionality than some painted plastic bricks. In its genre - only average I'm afraid.

funny albeit slightly repetitive. the third act undermines the anti-capitalist opening. consistently entertaining but it's no 21 jump street. also, andy is by far my least favourite parks and rec character so i don't find emmett very likeable at all. the sound was also shit, though i think that was the cinema's and not the film's fault

Charming, beautiful, and a touch subversive, The Lego Movie is the most fun I've had at the movies in a while.

Visually it looks pretty nice, but this film is so packed with jokes and 95% of the time I didn't enjoy them or thought they were quite weak. It is also a very predictable film, filled with tropes it tries so hard to subvert (but fails). I feel like it is exactly a typical Hollywood film that it tries so hard to berate in its message. Where is the soul and creativity? Aside from the animation, I didn't find it here. Disappointing and overhyped.

Everything is awesome ... including this film. The animations themselves are so well done, anyone who grew up with Legos is going to love watching this. Storywise it's okay but definitely not the main focus of this film. It's fun and witty at all the right places and definitely one of the better animated films to come out in the last five years.

Easy winner of the most meta movie of the decade. Suprisingly nuanced; you'll find something new each time you watch. PSA: Stop signing "Everything is Awesome" in public; it undermines the entire movie.

There was not even a single moment of this movie that made me smile. Only frowns and unhappiness. This was awful and trite and annoying.

I guess there's some tension between the creation of the movie itself and its message, but fuck it, that's hardly any less true for Toy Story.

An amazing creation. A fantastic ensemble cast with a screenplay that actual takes risk and isn't just a "refined princess story" or another sequel. The movie is heartfelt and filled with nonstop jokes. Totally also used Nostalgia effectively and made me want to rip my legos out of my closet and build again. It's everything needed in the current meh climate of animated films.

A rare example where a "tie-in" is not only successful, but worthwhile and smart. I'll admit I'm not as in love with this as some, but "The Lego Movie" is undeniably gorgeous, creative, inventive and ingenious. High quality family fun.

The Lego Movie is technically impressive, and while it does rely too heavily on self-awareness at times, almost every line of dialogue warrants either a gut-busting laugh or a smile.
