A decent crime flick (not my idea of a noir). Nothing really stands out... except Eli Wallach's face. He looks funny, but the guy can act.

The premise is somewhat ludicrous, the story is riddled with plot holes, and the first 20 minutes are a little slow. Despite all this, an amazing movie. Wallach and Keith brilliant as the psychotic bad guys. Meyer and Reed are also terrific as the detectives, just classic cops. The film makes fantastic of use of its locations. Although it lacks the shadowy look usually associated with the genre, it's balls-to-the-wall film noir through and through. An absolute blast with a hell of a climax.

Spot-on performances set squarely in San Francisco, shot in gorgeous black and white (seriously, the final sequence on the freeway gets everything right: lighting, tone, contrast, the works).

Great pacing, a tight plot and an excellent performance from Wallach. Some things tie a little too neatly, especially the ending, but it's a wonderful ride.

If you've ever wanted to kick an arrogant man in a wheelchair off a balcony, this film is for you.

2. A superb police flick with noir undertones. Eli Wallach and Robert Keith steal the show as the sociopathic duo, coldness and calculated fiery dialogue in every scene they are in. The film reaches a tipping point in its portrayal of psychopathy in its last 3rd, while protruding an atmosphere of sterility and noir-esque morbidity throughout, with the structure, fast pace and poignancy of the on-screen action keeping the viewer at the edge of the seat. Very solid.

Beautiful cinematography, great story, great acting. Eli Wallach, like Edward James Olmos, is consistently the best part of every movie he's in.

Two detectives are on the trail of two men that are involved in drug smuggling and leaving bodies in their wake. The story is paced well and well executed, but the crowning achievement of this film is Eli Wallach in what I consider one of the best villainous roles in noir that I've seen.

I really struggled to keep with this for most of the running time, before the infamous pushing scene woke me up a bit. Most of it is really ho-hum and blatantly contrived, and after two weeks I forgot I saw it.

This film is significant for its brutal plot, but what makes it surmount the average B movie is the oddly incendiary dialogue. And it's admirably fast-paced, almost reminiscent of modern filmmakers like Scorsese and Meirelles.

Pretty good, fast-moving crime flick. Otherwise, nothing special.

The ambitious heroin smuggling plot is novel and fun, while Wallach and Keith each bring a unique edge to their criminal characters, forming a fine odd-couple dynamic that brings an effortless energy to their interplay. Conversely, all of the police roles are written and acted so lifelessly that their scenes really drag throughout, which naturally leaves one rooting for the villains of the piece.

Smuggling dope in other people's luggage is a risky and stupid idea that's only there for the story. San Francisco still is a beautiful place to shoot in though.
