THE LITTLE HOURS aspires to be more than just the incongruity of its medieval setting and its decidedly modern humor. Indeed, it is unexpectedly intimate and character-driven, as if an illuminated manuscript was transcribed with attention to 21st century cadence and dialect. (The credits note the film is an adaptation of the Decameron.) Though it tracks several different storylines, they combine quite gracefully and nothing seems too big for the movie's pleasantly oddball, insular world.

The first half is a lot of “LOL they’re from the 14th century but they talk like modern people!!” but it switches stuff up in the second half and becomes appropriately weird and then kind of sweet? Great performances from everyone involved.

Its idea of telling a story seems to consist of either having actors awkwardly improvise scenes (comedic or dramatic in intent) or repeating some silly "nuns/priests being inappropriate or generally behaving in a non-pious fashion"-shtick until it becomes tiresome, then continuing it for twice as long. It comes down to bad acting either way. Not that there's any decent dialogue for that matter. Hence, no characters no story, just random, cringy nothing. Music was kinda cool, though.

The Little Hours, adapted from stories from The Decameron, imitates 70's Italian sexplotation flicks, updating the characters' dialogue to a contemporary standard, self-awareness included. Unfortunately, the stylistic parody doesn't quite work. The cast is likeable and funny, but they can't escape the shallowness of the medium's genre. There are a few fun moments, but not enough to distract from a lacklustre film that lacks substance beyond its cliched plot.

As wonderful as the cast is, I struggled with that fact that there are only two jokes: nuns behaving badly and sexual assault.

Very similar to something like Woody Allen's "Love and Death" in that its humor adopts a modern sensibility but its setting is obviously years away from our own. Unexpectedly funny and unhinged.

It seemed like my type of humor, but I was just left feeling bored.

Good premise and a great cast struggle to kick life into a comedy that either needed one more rewrite or one less to actually be as funny as it tries to convince us it is.

The casting makes this movie. Getting so many quality actors/actresses to play all of the different roles really keeps the film going long after the premise dies out. Overall it's pretty funny, but with a zippier edit this film could have really popped and been something special.

Very average. Couple of laughs. Trailer makes it look a lot better than it is.

This is one weird movie that goes all over the place, but manages to keep itself interesting and consistently funny. It's helped greatly by the charming cast.

Much less fun than was advertised but a fascinating, funny watch with a great cast.

Enjoyable throughout and really well made, but not as funny as I had hoped considering the cast. Honestly, I don't even know what genre I would describe this movie as. Worth the watch, but not something I'll probably revisit.

This film has a nice ensemble cast. There are a number of funny scenes in this movie. The script is strange but well done and fits the film well. Overall I would recommend this comedy.

A wild ride of a movie that tries to push the boundaries on comedy in film. It is a hilarious if just weird at sometimes but over all a fun movie.

An expensively shot and self-indulgent romp for Plaza, Franco, and Brie, the largely-improvised medieval comedy feels at times as if one is interloping on these celebrities' long-form inside jokes. With an amateur structure and inconsistent tone, the film's strongest aspects emerge in its blissful cinematography and spontaneous, charismatic performances from Brie, Plaza, and Offerman.

I enjoyed this a lot. It feels like the filmmakers went out of their way to create a realistic version of how these Decameron stories would have been told back in the 14th century (besides the modern English, of course). The original stories are just as raunchy as this adaptation, if not more so.

Complete chaos, I like it. Even though it has a good casting, there's no chance for them to act perfectly or step forward. Yet Aubrey Plaza made a great job. Simple and short, good enough.

An absolute tonal mess of a movie. Supposedly a comedy, long stretches offer anything but laughs and yet this movie doesn't fit any other genre either. A very strong cast on paper is wasted, and while Netflix promoted this as a sex comedy it's anything but. TLH is a weird mix of Holy Grail's Castle Anthrax and the ending of The VVitch but without any redeeming feature at all.

I'm unfamiliar with The Decameron, so there may be some riffing going over my head, but I find this only slightly amusing though easy to watch.

It's really not bad. But the truth of the characters is rather incongruent. It could've been a better movie and the cast is pretty strong.

half baked. the good parts are REALLY good but there is an exhausting amount of dullness. best viewed with the ability to skip forward like 30 seconds whenever you want.
