The ever-sentimental Andersen story provides the subject for a double-exposure trick film. The falling snow helps with the staging, though the visions aren't really as effective as that final bit of the girl being lead away by an angel, which is nicely done.

Emotionally affective and remarkable given the limitations of the medium. More than a curiosity, this is one of very few early shorts to move me in any way. Granted, the resolution is a bit trite and foolishly sentimental, but I'm sure people in 1903 were more willing to let shit like that slide. Recommended.
