The Little Mermaid

Lost a couple points for the song it used instead of Les Poissons. But the other new music is amazing! Great cinematography, same basic story, and every leading player nailed the role.

I don't know why they call that live action when it's just so much CGI, and half of it is not that good. It's a lot of, look, colours! It's not as bad as the Lion King and the Aladdin ones, but it's not good. I was complaining in the past about Disney movies using too much autotune and sounding soulless, and I guess the songs here are the result of no autotune but of also no pro singer. Many were off-tune, I guess I got my wish :I

No actress (in place of Halle Bailey) could have saved this movie. That being said, I do not mean to say I liked her or her acting in any possible way. Way too much reliant on original, yet 1.5 times longer. Most underwater creatures look weird (I'll give a pass to Sebastian, I thought he was cute.), where it climaxes to the point of cringe-laugh twice: once on "Under the Sea", and the other on the last scene. Awkwafina's voice acting was hard to withstand.

Overall an enjoyable watch. Dated in many ways. Some parts don't make sense if you're critical. But watch it for fun and it's a good watch.

"The Little Mermaid" is a film that undoubtedly has heart. Its depiction of love, sacrifice, and the pursuit of one's dreams resonate universally. However, the film is let down by an over-reliance on the original plot, a hesitancy to develop its characters fully, and an unwillingness to push the boundaries of the classic narrative. It's not without merit, but one cannot help but feel that a great opportunity has been missed.

Despite the pitch-perfect casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel, despite Melissa McCarthy's one to one Ursula impersonation, despite Javier Bardem doing everything in his power to give gravitas to King Triton, this movie comes out hollow. With muted colours, toned down creature designs and next to no plot deviations from the 1989 animated film, The Little Mermaid 2023 is as unnecessary as the rest of Disney's live-action remakes. It also introduced The Scuttlebutt; this must never be forgiven.

One of the better reimagined Disney live action remakes because it stays true to the source material, features a terrific cast, and provides just enough magic, adventure, and romance to weather the storm.

The love story gains depth, addressing interracial love and personal identity. However, the visual effects occasionally fall short, and Javier Bardem's portrayal of King Triton lacks flair.
