Far superior to the naive romanticism of Temple's civil war movies, this one shows us the actual horrific consequences of war: broken bodies and minds. Similarly, in a moving Cesar Romero scene we find that just next door in gay, chipper, tap-dancing London there is a little girl living in real, utterly desperate poverty. The final reunion scene represents outstanding screenwriting - superb material for this little actress. Like Temple's Heidi - it's a valuable addition to cinema for girls.

Watching this feels like I'm just biding time until I have kids and have no choice but to watch it over and over and over again.

Shirley Temple in Technicolor as The Little Princess (1939)! One of several Mary Pickford remakes she would do during her career, and yet another cute tearjerker. A well established formula by now which works very well even if it's not amongst Temple's most adorable productions. Could have made the nasty people a lot more nasty, but the final emotional moments was a heartfelt one.

Not bad but as in all her other films, no one is every really mean to Shirley Temple. The distinct lack of drama and tragedy really hurt this film.

Cheerful but serious kids movie; light but bearable for adults. Privileged Shirley Temple starts off insufferable but surrounds herself with friends except for the headmistress. I did not expect the cruel juxtaposition of losing her father on her birthday. The Queen Victoria ending is shoehorned but what they heck, might as well fit the era. Cesar Romero was a joy. Fav scene: dream sequence grew on me for the clever rhymes.

I had not seen this since I was a child in the early 1990s (my grandma bought it on VHS for us kids) until now. The war propoganda was lost on me back then! Temple is possibly overly theatrical but she (at least her on-screen persona) has 'it', a certain joie de vivre.
