Some nice observational moments and scenes of contrast between the lives of adults and children in a small village community don't really add up to much. Vlacil tries to inject an almost fairytale quality into this rustic setting, but his commitment is rather weak. Kiarostami's films about the hard lives of children in rural areas are far superior.
