A very underrated Bond film that I've grown to appreciate more over the years. Granted, it has problems (the villains are kinda weak), but Dalton's Fleming-esque take on Bond is great, the central romance is disarmingly sweet, and there are some absolutely fantastic stunts, especially the open-air plane fight at the end. Give it a watch.

Welcome back tonal appropriate Bond. Moore would make a pigeon do a double take while zipping around in his gondola car but then would shoot the villain in the testicles and it felt all wrong. With this entry we come to the last good Bond theme , I’m bold as hell, I might even consider Spy Hard I’m that dumb and bold.

This is the way I like Bond: grounded in the real-world and its events. Dalton's stone-cold portrayal of 007 is a big change from Moore's overly-suave playboy, but for this film the difference is well-suited. He foreshadows the Bond of the 21st century, and that makes this one of my favorite films of the franchise.

The Living Daylights was Timothy Dalton's first of only two Bond films. It's a shame that most fans didn't take to him in the role as I believe he portrayed Ian Fleming's original creation well. And his introduction and the opening pre-title sequence is one of the best. The new Aston Martin is an enjoyable inclusion, but otherwise the villains are forgettable and I'd of liked more John Rhys-Davies. Ultimately though Timothy Dalton's best efforts are let down by a lacklustre Bond outing.

Dalton nails the Bond character, portraying a mix of the suave, and the wry humour of Connery and the more human side of Lazenby, while ignoring the travesty that was Moore. A strong plot and some amazing action set pieces make this one of the best Bond movies.

This is how you breathe new life into a franchise. It's striking how versatile John Glen is as a Bond director. With its gritty style and densely plotted spy suspense, 'The Living Daylights' is vastly different from the much more light-hearted adventures of 'Octopussy' and 'A View to a Kill'. Dalton's agent is himself also almost unrecognizable; it's like in 'Live Free or Die Hard' - it's not really the same character anymore. The poster art is the greatest.

Dalton looks the part (though 007 is strangely goofy in the romantic scenes) but once again - for a Bond film directed by John Glen - the action scenes are better than story and atmosphere. Jeroen Krabbé and Joe Don Baker are smaller-than-life villains and Maryam d'Abo is another Bond girl lacking charisma and acting skills. Partly remade as 'Rambo III'.

I think this film will be kind of forgettable. Dalton isn't bad as Bond, but he isn't as good as Connery or Moore either IMO. The villains here don't seem as menacing either. Doesn't seem paced as well as previous installments. Not the worst of the films, but not in the top half either.

With a new Bond comes a new gritty vibe that still hangs onto that iconic Bondness, blending a serious Cold War story and hardass Dalton with some killer stunt and action scenes, John Barry's last Bond film score (and it's a good one), dry humor and a gorgeous Bond girl. The only true weaknesses are underdeveloped villains who are overshadowed by their henchman Necros (who Bond dispatches awesomely) and the narrative losing focus when we hit Afghanistan. (Ytadel's series ranking: #13 of 24)

The worst Bond film up to this point. Dalton didn't bug me as Bond but he isn't as charming or funny as Moore or Connery and it's not hard to see why he didn't last. The Bond girl is the most useless and incompetent character in the entire series up to this point. Bond: hold the plane steady. Bond girl: k *proceeds to fuck with all the controls and almost fly the plane into a mountain* The villain was so weak that the henchman outshines him by a mile. That poster is super misleading as well

After the buffoonery of the Moore-era Bond, the Dalton-era focuses more on Bond as an action star. The humour still exists, but it's on the fringe rather than front and center (although there is a scene where Bond rides a cello case down a snowhill).

Timothy Dalton replaced Roger Moore as 007 and stated he wanted to return to Fleming's written representation of Bond. In the main he succeeded with a tougher, harsher Bond. There are some amazing stunts and great locations but weak villains. The franchise certainly needed refreshing and Dalton manages to do that with a restored view of Bond.

The Living Daylights shifts the Bond franchise into darker territory. Dalton is a great Bond, able to lean into the charm & quips while playing it mostly straight as an assassin on a mission. The film also leans more heavily into the romance, with d'Abo taking a bigger share of the screentime. Her Kara being charming but inept. The plot has its share of cheese, but the dynamic between the Russians, Taliban & US arms-dealer is strong. Malik is good. The title song is top tier.

The more serious Dalton gets the more I seem to like him in the Bond role. Everyone beams about how Daniel Craig's serious face was a breath of fresh air for Bond's immature reputation, but I think Dalton gets dished a lot of crap for doing the same thing. His interpretation sits well with me, unfortunately some of the ridiculous plot points don't. Bottom line is, I like Dalton's Bond, but it feels like the writers were handing him cheesy Moore material at times.

Oddly reminiscent of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Bond has emotions and an unexpected vulnerability. Dalton's Bond is a break from Moore and allows the character to be taken seriously again. Great action film overall, should be regarded as one of the defining Bond films.

Ah, yes. 1987. When Taliban were our sidekicks against the Russians. Good times! Dalton may not be anybody's favourite Bond, but he's not bad, if a bit bland and the plot is vastly superior to most of the others, being a straight Cold War spy thriller in the spirit of the great Le Carré. Also, I've always been partial to the title song.

Certainly a much grittier and realistic take on the Bond mythos and, granted, it was a nice departure from the comically tragic direction the Moore-led Bond movies were heading. It did have a few too many odd plot twists, though, and the Kara character grew more and more annoying and useless throughout the film. However, Dalton was not bad at all, no miracle worker but better than late-era Moore. The ending killed it a bit, sadly. Overall, nice return to status quo but nothing more than that.

A definite bounce back for the series, and a very promising debut for Timothy Dalton in the role; he has a grit and anger that contrast nicely with Moore's take on the role. The story itself is a good one too, although it bogs down in the third act (the Mujahideen subplot in particular), with Jeroen Krabbe and Joe Don Baker making a nice, slimy pair of villains. Well made in all departments (John Glen pulls off one unexpectedly gorgeous shot); a-ha's title song is one of my personal favorites.

Dalton's James Bond is less of a Mary Sue than his previous incarnations; he's still slick, but has these rough edges that make him feel a bit more three-dimensional, not to mention believable as someone who commits brutal acts of violence for a living. Quite frankly, I much prefer him like this. (3.5/5)

This is probably a case of not going far enough in one direction. Dalton remains the closest silver-screen representation of Fleming's idea of the character but the tone is more akin to an action-star than Ian's idea of a British spy during the Cold War. The Living Daylights is a much better-executed film than anything during the later day Moore films but I feel like it didn't separate itself enough from the pack. Still a positive trend upwards.

Dalton brought a welcome no-BS gravitas to Bond that likely turned off Moore fans even though he handles the light stuff just as well. & although there is a good opening car chase & a spectacular mid-air stunt sequence the film around him has some major problems starting w/ a script that reaches a franchise zenith of incomprehensibility when Afghanis join in. The villains are also goofy, the Walkman-wearing henchmen is silly & what's at stake is... mujahideen getting killed by better weapons?

It could have ended bigger than it was, but it is still an interesting entry. It starts out with so many classic spy trope with defection and russian spies, sometimes reminding me of From Russia With Love. Considering his short lived stint as James Bond, I thought Dalton would disappoint yet he is quite memorable in the iconic role. Undoubtedly a departure from the more lighthearted Moore entries, and all the better for it, as it ushers in the era of a grittier and darker take on the character we’ve become accustomed to these last few decades. The added nice action combined with its relentless pacing turned this into an easy watch.

This feels very modern in a lot of ways, while still adhering to the Bond tropes. The story is a fun spy thriller much closer to those first few Bond films, and even though there are plenty of outlandish moments they're all effective because they're well set up. It helps that a lot of the performances here are pretty good, which fleshes out the characters who are probably rather thin in the script. There's nothing quite outstanding or meaningful here, but still very good.

Timothy Dalton misses the finesse of predecessors Connery and Moore, yet remains a very convincing Bond in a film that does distance itself somehow from previous instalments anyway. There are certainly moments where director John Glen gets to shine, but he also opts for the safe "blow-shit-up" card quite a lot: many action scenes are completely dominated by the ample explosions - which call for decidedly less directorial labour - thus resulting in a film notably closer to modern action flicks.

Pretty decent Bond actioner which earns a few points for plot, locations and baddies. The action and fight choreography improved notably in the 80s Bonds and here the chops and kicks gain a crunchy realism. Dalton has the looks, sharp wits and moves, although he is far too sappy in his scenes with Maryam d'Abo's ditzy agent. James Bond does some actual spy shit in this movie, and also fights communists with the help of the Mujahideen so it's a mixed bag over 25 years later - Joe Don Baker feels pretty wasted in the film as the villain, the big highlight is the plane fight and everything afterwards suffers. "What kind of girl do you think I am?" Only the best Bond Girl ever! Good Lord what a woman! Living Daylights is a sweeping cold war spy/crime adventure with plot holes and bad shots abound...and little camp or style makes suspension of disbelief a chore. But the fun, action-packed story whisks you across continents with ease - until the last 10 minutes; sadly, a "climax" handled like an afterthought. While the film was not explicitly written with Roger Moore in mind, it certainly feels like one of his films. It has a very light, quippy tone, and Dalton's more straight portrayal of Bond seems to exist in a different film. He's not only off tone, but his serious demeanor in this film makes him seem dull, which is not a fair appraisal of what he's doing.
