I admit I went into this expecting a zombie flick. I probably couldn't have been further from the truth. It's been a long time since I've seen a horror that was emotionally engaging, to the point where some scenes were actually difficult to watch, like the "the more you take, the better you'll feel!" scene. Leo Bill is fantastic in the lead role and deserves a plethora of awards. If the film was more focused on the family drama elements, this could have been even better. Wtf hallucination scene.

With a title like 'The Living and the Dead' you'd expect at least one or two zombies to make an appearance. Alas, this movie had none...but I did learn that mentally ill people can be just as frightening as the undead.

I found this movie simultaneously highly distressing and absolutely heartbreaking. It's a little disturbing how much I empathize with the protagonist, a knife-wielding retarded mental case. Although it strains credulity mental health wise, "The Living and the Dead" is powerful and unnerving in a way you can't quite explain, like a dream that you can't quite remember that nags at you upon waking. Also, it's incredibly atmospheric and very well acted by the three main players.
