This is a nearly perfect drama. The only thing I would omit is the rape scene. I don't think the movie needed that. Other than that, I love it, and the gorgeous film score!

Maggie Smith is extraordinary - a rich, devastating performance fighting to burst free from a slightly drab downer. For the most part it has the appearance and sensibilities of typical Sunday evening period drama, until it occasionally veers, quite clumsily, into very dark territory indeed. Worth it for Dame Maggie.

This grade is entirely a result of Maggie Smith's extraordinary work in the title role. If ever there was an example of a performer single-handedly elevating the trainwreck of the film surrounding them, this is it.

A career best for Maggie Smith marred by the will to never watch it again. And the rape scene
